help!! How long does the firmware update take , how big s it?

I started the updates some 20 minutes or so ago got a non screen message saying it is updating the firmware but nothing indicating progress , how far , nothing , very worrying as one does not know whether it is working or not really with no sort of feed back ?

Anyone else done this and got an idea how big the download is etc ?

Should I be panicking as I turn my EM5 into a dead paperweight?

I don't know how long the EM-5 takes, but I have done firmware updates for several cameras of different brands and 2 lenses over the years. It always takes about 15-30 seconds or so.

By the way, I think I recall reading that the firmware update has a bug fix in it that was supposed to fix a firmware update problem. The original firmware has a bug that causes firmware updates to not work or something like that. I real catch-22 situation.

I am using version 1.04 on a Mac but nothing is happening

listen to me oh children and learn from my mistakes

luck is with me took a photo , reviewed same version 1.0 for body and 1.1 for lens all is well - not doing that again

BTW it still says it is updating even though the camera is disconnected- good one !

I thought and maybe this is not every camera you can use your card reader and download to an empty SD card and then put that in your camera for an update.

Either way I would think you would use an AC adaptor to do a download?

yes that was my reference to the version of the updater Mac had to be 1.04 or later - methinks it is still not perfected

but it looks like i survived --this time!

Ron, I did mine a few days ago and it took a loooong time: so long, that I went and found a few chores to do just to keep from fretting. It finally notified me that it was completed. My guess is that the servers that provide the update may drag somehow during peak demands, but I'm not geeky enough to know if this is a valid supposition.

Ron,

I was able to update from 1.0 to 1.1 with the Mac 1.04 updater. I had to connect in Storage mode and it took awhile to get to the point of running (maybe 4-5 minutes but I didn't time it). It finally got to the message on the camera that tell you not to interrupt it. If you don't get that far probably nothing is done.

I'm on 10.7.3 on the Mac.

I have a Mac with the latest version of Snow Leopard and before I updated my EM-5 I updated the Olympus updater to latest version 1.04. I think I read that one must make sure you are using that version. My update took around 20 minutes but all was successful. I know when you set there and wait it seems like forever. Bill

I had the same problem the first time I tried. In the end I gave up and disconnected the camera ( holding my breath assuming it would wreck the camera). It was fine! I tried a couple of times that night with the same problem.

In the end I gave up. the next day I tried again and it worked within about 10 mins. I think the server gets stuck. I think someone else on the forum had a similar problem.

I had mine take quite a while. It seemed to be just during the initial download the firmware from the server part, because I could see the network activity. During this stage the camera screen is blank which is kind of scary and there is no progress bar or indicator on the computer screen, and I think that my camera even went to sleep because it took so long. Once the firmware is downloaded and the actual flashing starts, the camera will show the exclamation mark in a triangle symbol, I think that is the critical part where you would not want to turn it off and that part only takes a couple minutes. I think that their server is just slow at times, and because there is no progress or indication of what it is doing you don't know if you should quit or the download is stuck or what.

Why Olympus persists with this !@#$ Olympus-software-required server-based firmware update is beyond me. It's been a source of constant complaints, worries, OS incompatibilities, and accidentially bricked cameras since forever. If they think it's too complicated for some people to download the update, stick it on a card, and put it in the camera, then they could at least make that procedure a working alternative for those of us with more than two brain cells.

Wow that's kind of lame. Everyone else is okay with a ROM file on your memory card. Is Olympus afraid of firmware modfications? It'll happen anyways if it's possible...

I don't know how big the download is, probably not so big. However, the connection may take a long time. Each time I've updated my Pens, I have underwent through the kind of anxiousness you are experiencing, with only that black screen displayed for a long time. Each time I have resisted the need to touch a button on the camera, but in the end everything went well. The info screen telling the updating was starting was displayed only for a few seconds, almost not long enough to read it. so the only advise is be patient !

However I have read that there was a problem with one of the updating program not working correctly. Just make sure that you have the last version of the updating software !

Yes it makes everyone grumpy ! I don't know why they make it so, because some are bound to get connection problems, or the Olympus servers may go down or whatever.

May be they fear that people could download the wrong firmware ? But that would be easy to check before starting the firmware update.

If something happens to the camera while a person is attempting to update the firmware, is that person responsible? IOW, if the camera "dies" during the attempt or needs repair, does the owner have to pay the price?

I've read quite a few stories around dp (not just on this forum) about this happening, many times when the owner has stated she/he did everything correctly.

Because I am a bit "technically challenged" and have read some horror stories, I have yet to make an attempt at updating firmware. However, so far any updates for my cameras have not included something I couldn't live without.
