help!! How long does the firmware update take , how big s it?

I remember reading here yesterday, you have to do the first FW update w/o a lens attached? Maybe that's the problem?
No it always worked with a lens on. However you can't update a lens if the body isn't up to the last version first. You always have to start with the body updating.

May be you read that for another brand of camera ?

However:

1) I think you do it W/O lens.

2) Oly are not THAT stupid - it downloads the update, checks it can install it, and then does so. The only way it it turns into a brick is if the last bit fails, and that is very rare. On the other hand if the first bit fails, it just sits there, causing heart attacks. Everyone has been complaining about this eff-witted idea for years. It shows that Oly are both (completely) deaf and (fairly) stupid. Updating my GH2 was a doddle.
I started the updates some 20 minutes or so ago got a non screen message saying it is updating the firmware but nothing indicating progress , how far , nothing , very worrying as one does not know whether it is working or not really with no sort of feed back ?

Anyone else done this and got an idea how big the download is etc ?

Should I be panicking as I turn my EM5 into a dead paperweight?

Help ?
Ron

30 minutes !!!Hope my battery lasts!

I've never heard anyone say to do it without the lens, and I've always had the lens on on all my Olys. I guess I could see someone telling a total "noob" to take the lens off so that they don't get confused by the software also offering an update for a lens that happens to need it at the same time, which it will. Just one less thing to get them confused I guess.

was in specifically in reference to an E-M5 w a Panny (20mm?) lens, IIRC...
going from FW 1.0 to 1.1 only...

sorry, I'd do a search for the reference, but need to catch up on my sleep first.

I got that bit off here - hence the "I think".

I've juts read the instructions and it says don't update with more than two lenses attached. That inspires confidence then....

I have never tried to do it without lens, but can confirm it works with a lens on.

After the camera is connected, the updater program will look for updates and report what can be updated in a little table. In this table you will see both the body and the lens connected, with actual firmware version and whether a newer version is available.

You have to choose the body update first if one is available. If you don't you get a warning that you should first update the body.

At the end of the body update, you are asked whether you want to make another update and if you say yes, you can then update the lens.

One might say Oly is almost paranoid about their FW. The system they have in place makes it very hard for anyone to download camera FW to anything other than the camera, or upload to the camera from any source other than the official online file. Lenses, that's a different story, as you can use Panasonic protocol to upgrade an Oly lens through a Panasonic camera.

May be ? I never checked, since I have both Panasonic and Olympus gear, I have always updated Panasonic lenses and bodies together and Olympus lenses and bodies together. Thought this would minimize the risks of something going wrong.

However when you go to the Panasonic updating web page, you are told to update Panasonic lenses through the Olympus updating program if you don't have a Panasonic body.

Good night BTW !

OK. Someone on here complained his update failed, so he phoned Oly and they said do it without lens. Apparently they were busking again.
