Usually I do this pretty seamlessly when I update any Fuji camera. but i am having a problem and no clue why it is happening or how to solve it. I updated the firmware to the latest greatest on my X100Vi, but now for some reason although the AFS seems to work fine, the AFC no longer works…meaning it does not actually get focus of anything at any distance. No green box, no confirmation, nothing. Insights, thoughts. HELP please.

I switch back to AFS and all good, try the AFC again and nothing. Will not acquire focus.

So I also have the XT50 and updated that as well to the latest firmware and that was no problem in either AFS or AFC both work without any issue. Seems to be great. So just my VI is being wacky in the AFC mode. Hoping somebody can give some help. Kind of freaking me out.

It’s possible that something went wrong during update. Did you update via XApp or via an SD card? You could try to reupdate using an SD card. Format the card in the camera, then copy file to card and copy FW to card. Make sure the battery is fully charged and follow instructions on Fuji’s FW page.

Used the SD card route…and I have followed the normal instructions since I have owned just about every fujifilm camera…that is not the issue. I know what the instructions are, I follow the instructions to the letter. I have done this many many times before. So that is not the problem with following instructions. And that is why i am freaking out. this should not have happened and not sure what to do.

Should I just reinstall the latest firmware over the top of what I already installed to see if that makes a difference or will I mess things up that way?

Apologies if I came across as patronizing…i didn’t mean to. I do agree that your experience is cause for concern. Since camera is under warranty, a second attempt at updating won’t do any harm. If that fails then you can call Fuji to service it.

I was hoping that somebody else experienced this problem. I mean it would be super weird if I had the only camera that this happened to, but I guess that is possible.

If my only solution is to send it to Fuji, then I will wait until after the holidays since I can just use it in AFS mode.

And still waiting for anyone else to weigh in, with maybe more insights

I wonder if the problem might possibly be in the M-C-S switch at the side of the camera. Try cycling through the options several times to see if it might be sticking. A long shot but maybe worth a try. Otherwise I would try to re-update the firmware, maybe using the XApp instead of the SD card route.

That is a good thought, and I flicked the switch on the side back and forth between AFS and AFC and M and back again, and the screen did reflect and confirm that it could go into the AFC mode, BUt in that mode, there still was no acquiring or locking focus. So no success there. And when I opened the app on my IPhone it recognizes my camera, but it already reflects that I have installed the latest firmware 1.20. So I have no idea how to get the app to reinstall what is already there. I may try using the SD card method again and reinstall but dont want to do that since I plan on using the camera during the holidays and dont want to brick it if that method of reinstalling fails completely. FYI I have also written to Fuji support. They actually have a service center here in NJ I think. But I will see what their response to my email is first of course.

Have you tried doinga full reset of the camera? It may be a setting somewhere.

Alan

I think if the firmware was buggy, there would be a few more talking about this so I'd suggest it is an issue with your camera. Can you post a video of the rear monitor so we can see exactly what is happening? Also, can you show your AF settings? A factory reset may also be a good idea as an alternative.

HAHAHA….And for those of us who wonder why we go to this website, here is the best example. Reset did the trick…AFC is now working. Something I should have figured out myself since I am nor really a noob. But it is great that you mentioned it. Thanks so much. SUCCESS.

Glad it worked out. Happy holidays.

Great News! Credit for the save also goes to Alan Sh, who was actually the first to suggest an reset.

Here's my guess for what happened. Note the Shutter AF control that causes focus to happen when you depress the shutter has separate settings for AF-C and AF-S. You might have had it set for one and not the other. The way to tell is to press the AF button and see if that focuses.
