Am a Phase One Capture One user myself and working on a MAC with Leopard. As you all know, neither Phase One nor any other raw converter, other than Capture NX2 (and I hate its interface!), recognizes D700 files. Has anyone come up with a way to get Phase One to recognize D700 files? If so, how? Once in Phase One, which profile do you use?

If no one has come up with a "workaround" for Phase One, what JPEG picture control settings do you use and do you adjust them at all to get better images from the D700?

Thanks

It is supposedly the same chip and processor as a D3 so it must just be a case of changing a tag or something , maybe a program that allows you to edit meta data.

In Adobe Photoshop 6.0 (and other photo software) you can save a file or files in a different format such as jpg or tiff or png with out opening the file.

This has worked for me in the past.

In Adobe (Editor) 6.0 click on the File tab and click on "Process Multiple Files." in there you can save from one format to another without opening them first. Although, I think the software will automatically open the file/s as it converts from one format to another.

It may be worth a try. It may be a way around your problem. can't hurt to try.

Hi Thom,

Are you posting something soon or is it already posted? If it is, I couldn't locate it.

Thanks a million

See that but how do I access step by step, OXeD for my Mac and make the changes?

Sorry to be so dense.

Bibble support D700 conversion now. See this thread:

If you're a DxOne wiz, I wouldn't recommend learning yet another editing tool interface and command set, I would stick with the interim solution of hacking the D700 files to look like D3 files.

Bibble will cheerfully output TIFF for purther PP in DxOne. If I'm showing ignorance of DxOne, it's only because I've never used it.

If you don't want to hack files or use the NX2 trial, Bibble is another way to "get from here to there".

I'm not going to post a step-by-step method. Thing is, when you start dealing with hex editors on files, you need to know what you're doing. It's very easy to make mistakes and lose images. And if you open a critical file accidentally instead of an image file, the results can be disastrous. I've given enough knowledge that someone who knows what they're doing should have no trouble.

A better solution for you if you have Parallels, Boot Camp, or the like, is to use Gabor's prepackaged program. Perhaps someone will find time to write a Mac-only script that's similar.

For the time being I've decided to shoot RAW + JPEG and hold off on processing the RAWs. The downside to this is coming up with reasonable settings for the jpegs (I never bothered with the picture controls on the D300 my first Nikon). I figured it wouldn't be too long of a delay but your website note wasn't overly encouraging that we would see either Aperture support or ACR/Lightroom update very soon. Do you have any insight on timing? At least Apple seems to have divorced camera updates from OS updates.

Thanks!

As a followup, am wondering what picture controls folks are using to get the best images.

Since I've always shot raw, by default, I've been using the neutral picture control on the D700.

Would love the opinions of others!

Thanks

Download the DX2MODE1 and DX2MODE2 Picture Controls and use them as starting places. Dial up the sharpening, consider dialing down the contrast.

ACR first, then Lightroom 2.0, then Aperture would be my guess, but I'm not privy to their exact schedules.

Hi Thom

this is disingenous, and unlike you - the front page of your site simply links back here:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=28743455

it would be okay, but if you aren't going to offer any help, then directing people to your site so that they can come back here . . . . . .

Whatever

if you're using a mac, then if you have access to parallels or fusion, then this fix also works well with Aperture / Lightroom and ACR on the Mac. I've managed to write a little script to do all the files in a folder at once, but it would mean installing a runtime on people's computers which I don't have the right to do . . . . sorry.
Still, it's not rocket science!

My feeling is that at the moment it's the best fix, whatever converter you're using, but especially with Aperture, as it uses the D3 converter - which is clearly right.

I've spent a lot of time trying to find a fix in raw.plist, but it doesn't seem so simple. I've tried duplicating D3 and changing values to D700, I've also tried creating siblings (which works with most cameras). I'm not sure what the problem is, but have appealed to a 'higher authority' - hopefully a few pints of guiness and some thought will provide a solution - in which case I'll post it here.

all the best
