Let's Talk Processing

Download the DX2MODE1 and DX2MODE2 Picture Controls and use them as
starting places. Dial up the sharpening, consider dialing down the
contrast.
Does anyone have any experience with the new Nikon picture controls, LANDSCAPE and PORTRAIT? How do these controls vary from the two DX2MODE's?

Hi There
For the time being I've decided to shoot RAW + JPEG and hold off on
processing the RAWs. The downside to this is coming up with
reasonable settings for the jpegs (I never bothered with the picture
controls on the D300 my first Nikon). I figured it wouldn't be too
long of a delay but your website note wasn't overly encouraging that
we would see either Aperture support or ACR/Lightroom update very
soon. Do you have any insight on timing? At least Apple seems to have
divorced camera updates from OS updates.
This is not tricky for either Adobe or Apple - the conversion is really the same as the D3, so, I'd expect an ACR conversion within a week or 10 days. If apple are slower (but they are due a camera raw update), then you can always convert to DNG, which Aperture will handle well as a generic dng conversion.

I actually think the clunky dos application by panopeeper is the right way at the moment as you are getting the D3 conversion for all applications on an Apple, and from what I've see that is clearly right . . . . more right than a generic .DNG conversion is likely to be.

As for using jpg - well, fine, as a stopgap, but if I were you I'd use 'neutral' for the setup - even standard seems much too contrasty and saturated to my eyes. But the panopeeper solution isn't too tricky, and I don't think it'll require you to change anything later on . . . it gives the right answer now (as long as you can deal with the exif saying D3!).

all the best

Thom,

Downloading the D2x modes is not so simple as the D700 won't let you as the download was for the other card slot. Ugh?

Ideas on downloading onto a D700?
