Beth,

It's the gold-toned badging on the E-20. Check Phil's review pictures-- Olympus in gold, E-20 (P or N) in gold, etc. A little gaudy and boorish, methinks.

Take Care,

F.J.
I guess I just have a very common face (which is why you think
you've seen it before )

As for the E20 - I don't like the gold bits!

Do I have to do a review

It'll take a day or so I guess. And I'll have to wait for the E10
to get back to do a proper job.

Beth,

I'm assuming Jono is referring to the gold trim on the E-20. On the E-10 the Olympus nameplate is chrome (silver?) and on the E-20 it's gold. Also there is a rather obvious "5.0MP" badge on the E-20 emblazoned in gold as well as the familiar screened on name over by the AF/MF lever.

Take care,

TomJ

Jono,

Not to make light of the latest tragedy in NY or anywhere else in the world, but work certainly gets in the way of really important news. :-)

It's nice to be able to put a face with the words, however, I expected a larger grin or a cat that just ate the... expression on your face seeing as your much anticipated E-20 arrived. I know that you will make good use of the camera. Enjoy!

Thanks.

When I just came into the forum and saw the thread--I knew the E-20 must have arrived smile . Happy for you (I hope the 10 also came), but even happier to see you. You look pretty much as I thought--or imagined. What a nice Brit looking gent LOL--and 'honorable' too.

HI F.J.

Thanks for posting-I guess I'm quite jelous of my office too! It's a great place to work - but too easy to spend time talking to the great people on the forum!

Personally I'm quite partial to cold, modern techno-minimalism - but Im much too messy to make it work!

And as we have old buildings, It's nice to take advantage and have cozy chaos.

Mind you, just been out to dinner, and the damn stove has gone out and it's bl* dy freezing in here!

so much for funky heating :^)

As for the office - it's great -
here's another shot of the inside

and here is the outside (on the left, with the house on the right)

You realize, of course, how jealous you make us, right? Neat to see
a software developer who isn't into the cold, modern,
techno-minimalism that is prevalant. Such ambience', so 'let's use
this technology, but not lets us forget our roots' sort of thing.
Way to go,

F.J.

Ah - the gold bits - well, I've decided I do rather like them now! The Olympus on the flash, and some of the writing on the side, which was in nice tasteful silver on the E10 is in gold on the E20.

Rather silly really - but I didn't have anything better to say.

so far

write times are slow - but, to be honest, I don't often fill the buffer.

Review and zoom speeds are really fast - seem almost instantaneous - and that's lovely.

nothing more to report yet!

Irish Whiskey oh yes!
Jamesons I like best (can't think of other names off the top of my head).

Really nice.

as far as the small camera was concerned, I just began to feel that they were all so compromised that one wouldn't enjoy taking pictures with them . . . but I'm sure there will be the perfect one soon - I haven't seen a C40, and was just wondering whether that was it

but I guess not!

jono slack
I guess your wise words makes lot of sense. I'll just wait and
see... BTW there was an interesting program on the TV about
digicams yesterday. It was also anounced that there's a big price
drop to be expected in the near future for all digital cameras. so
maybe we will see a more stable and reasonable price level within
soon...

I see you're a guy who enjoyes a good whiskey... You must be living
in the dream country then. It's really amazing how many whiskey
producers there are in the UK and Ireland. I've enjoyed visiting
some of them and I like the Irish taste a lot but I guess that's
not in Mr. Slack's taste :-)

Anyway, cheers ! :-)

Jens
HI Jens
Just a small word of warning from the wise (!!?).
I went through the 'small camera to carry around' bit - none of
them wowed me, so I thought the G2, although not so small, would at
least fit the bill. But it didn't either. I would rather carry
around something big than put up with the shortcomings. I now have
a really nice, small billingham bag which takes E10, wallet, phone,
pda, tobacco tin, and either the FL40 or a couple of lenses -
that's what I carry around with me now.

OTOH I wouldn't worry about SM - it's in lots of things, and you
can use it as a second memory in the E10 and E100. When I'm on a
trip I always write to a 128mb sm, and then edit onto a CF or
microdrive for backup purposes in the evening - works well.

I thought the C40 looked nice - taking AA batteries as well - but
I'm not going to have a look for a while!

kind regards
jono slack
It's always nice to know who you're talking to..

I've been runing around in camera stores for several hours today to
look for a compact digicam. Can't say I've become more clever about
what to choose though... None of them really makes me wow ! The one
I liked most was the Sony DSC-P5 but I hate the memory stick...
The CP775 was nice in the hands but the pic quality was a little
disapointing. Then I tried the Ixus and the C-40. The C-40 was very
nice in hand but as I said before, I don't want the SM card.

I wanted to look at the Canon A-20 as well but it was sold out
everywhere. Do you know anything about it ? It seems to be a little
plastic but it takes CF cards and normal AA batteries.

Anyway, thanks again for sharing your portrait :-)

Cheers
Jens
HI Jens
I did - didn't I :^(

Sorry it wasn't a shock - at least that would have made it more
interesting :-)

My E20 arrived this afternoon - true to my word, self portrait
first!.

I'll post more about it when I've done some fiddling about.

kind regards
jono slack
You did it, I don't believe my eyes :-)

You look just like I expected as you already gave a hint with the
previous b/w photo taken seveal years ago. Nice self portrait !

Does this mean that your E-20 has arrived ?

Well done !

Cheers
Jens

hehehe

I'm afraid I'm not really in the same league as you - when I say 'classy' I mean classy for me!

there's some Montbazillac and a bottle of Barsac - neither of them remotely grand vintages.

one day maybe!

so - what's for desert :^)

kind regards

:^)

Didn't think you would - s'true though - I may be old, but I can
make it to the wine rack in the house - this one has mostly malt
whiskey and gin - together with a couple of bottles of classier
desert wine.

jono slack
Oooh.... Oneophiles abound. Whatcha' got there, Sauternes,
Trockenbeerenauslese, Tokaj, Port, what?

I need to know so that I can bring the appropriate dessert, you
see.... Chocolate souffle' cake with the Port, Raspberry and pastry
cream Gateaux with the Trocken.... oh, I'm getting hungry now, all
your fault!

May all your corks stay moist,

F.J.
If I told you that the wine rack was only in the office to store
the drinks that we don't wan't available to 'unsuitable persons' in
the house . . . . . . . you wouldn't believe me would you? . . . .
.so I won't say it :-)
Too late!.... Not for a minute ;-)

Like others have said, close and predictable from your previous
descriptions.

Believe it or not, I actually fell for the "old man in the boat"
photo for awhile. Silly me!

I notice you have an "office supply" wine rack tucked in the corner
of the room. Life IS good!!!

Oh! you're entirely suitable . . . .
I take that as a personal affront!
all depends on my definition of suitable . . . . . . but you can take offence if you LIKE
do you like single malt whisky
Lagavullin?
McCallan?
Laphroic?
Actually.....more of a vodka person I'm afraid. More evidence of
unsuitability.
Safer - I have to admit, that despite appearances I'm not really a whisky drinker - I really like it, but not the next morning - I went through a period a couple of years ago when friends asked me to do things to their computers - I never charged them (on the all or nothing and they'd be shocked by all principle). As there were lots of whisky bottles around . . . . . the natural assumption was to give me some whisky . . . . . and then the next friend came along!

I would think my annual consumption is about one and a half bottles :^)
Now if we're talking wine . . . . ..
so - when are you coming then?
Straight after Christmas.....didn't I tell you the dates?
Remember, you promised to fetch me at Heath Row in the Rolls?
You got the wrong guy - no rolls - sorry - you can have the horse box, the VERY beat up espace, the gracefully ageing saab or the 2 year old saab - take your pick. However I'll be really pleased to pick you up! Just send us your plane times :-)
and where on earth did you get the word 'blimey' from egad.

thought it was stricly 50's cockney!
Aaaack! Well, that dates me again. So.....both OLD and
unsuitable....
deary me we are a little tetchy today aren't we my hansome!

Hi Cleave

It's terrible - and I'm very sorry - we just had dinner with an old old friend who's husband died recently - another old friend;. The world is full of terrible things. I'd actually posted this before I heard about the plane. It leaves a feeling of guilt don't it. But I suppose the world must carry on.

Anyway - here's the face - the arrival of the E20 seemed rather an anti-climax, all so familiar. I've hardly had a chance to play, but the review and zoom times are quite a shock!

more later. I'll do my best to take something decent to post around here.

Hi Diane

I got the camera out of the box and said - right let's take some pictures of the animals (grey and grotty weather); but a little voice inside me said - hang on kiddo - you PROMISED to do a self portrait.

I have to admit, it wasn't the very FIRST shot (which was horrible) but I did do my best.

Nice Brit looking GENT eh!

Jono,

Ah, you are simply too critical of yourself, I think ... a trait of an artiste, to be sure!

T'would be a delight to sit down with you and a few of the other contributors here and chat about the finer aspects of photography over a pint.

David

Hi David
what's that 'a' pint :^)
It would indeed, so, when are you coming over this side of the pond then?

as an alternative you could all come round to mine and help me with all those bottles of malt whisky!

Who was that unmasked man? :-)

Take no offense Jono, but after all the exaggerated self-loathing this was as anti-climactic as Heraldo Rivera's live report on the contents of Al Capone's Vault... You might've at least warped the image a bit. :-)

You look as you should, mayhap a bit more lucid than we'd expect.(more spirits!) ;-)

You could've at least experimented with some Photoshop generated lens cracks... :-) I've found that self portraits captured through a mirror have been savng me a fortune in lens repair, however the bad luck is continually mounting...

My best (not saying much -but consistent),

G.
