***DPReview Shutdown Threads***

This is terribly disappointing...! Checking DPReview multiple times a day has been a routine activity for me for many, many years now. I'll miss having a site that provides regular coverage of all camera brands - both in news coverage, reviews & with dedicated forums.

Also, after checking several of the individual forum "DPReview Shutdown Threads", I find it curious that there are far more responses on this one than many of the other larger forums.

The lesson would be: we should care about who owns the sites, forums, social networks we contribute to. Note that even if we care it might change of course, as Amazon bought this one at some point.

So: what is the model of PF for example ? Does anyone know ?

Lesson #2 would be: our contribution is more than the sum of our contributions. Opting out with a zip with our messages and reduced pictures - it's slightly unfair. I don't know how it should be, but something seems to be missing, at the level of a sub forum / community for example. My own messages alone are meaningless out of the context of the Pentax forum.

Not only did Pentax outlive DPR, but it has some of the most robust independent forums for users to go to. Between Pentax Forums and maybe a multi-brand forum system like Fred Miranda people should be fine.

All you have to do is visit the site and hit "about." https://www.pentaxforums.com/articles/pages/about.html

It's user supported, with perks for donation, and if you buy through an affiliate like BH or Adorama it helps the site and you. It started about the same time as Amazon bought DPR I believe.

And it's better for Pentax info than here on DPR in the forums and elsewhere, and a very well regarded source of info for mirrorless shooters who adapt Pentax K, 67, 645 and Takumar (and other film era) lenses.

Another sad story of a huge company investing on an interesting platform only to destroy it.

Really sad news. I have been a daily user of the forum and of this site for almost two decades. Over the years, the Pentax dpreview forum became more important than the reviews and news shared on the site. A great, friendly and knowlegeable community was created. I respect a lot of members here both for their artistic results and passion as well as their understanding of technics, equipment and the science behind digital cameras.

From time to time, I visited some other forums on this site too. But the ethos of this community was really special. So, a big thank you to all of you that kindly offered your photos, skills and advice. All the best to you.

Although this forum was the main reason to visit the site, I do not underestimate the reviews and other articles here. It was a constant and important source of information, built around a scientific approach.

Although I want to leave with a polite manner, I want to leave saying that:

Amazon, you failed! Striving for profit made you blind. And in a photographic terms, this makes you dead. I am sorry and angry with your decision to shut down this site. Count me as a lost customer. I wonder what would cost to Amazon to keep the site active as a read-only source of information for the photographic community.

All the best to the stuff that looses their job out of the incapable management of Amazon.

Happy shooting to all and we will meet again on other platforms.

Kind Regards,
Spyros

Almost 14 years here, I got to know many good friends. I learned a lot and shared the most beautiful moments with you. I don't forget Ron, his interventions, and his classic cowboy outfit. I don't forget Ozdean and his encouragement, or Alain, X-media, Alex ,Lawrence, and many others. Many cultures from different countries I got to know here. I spent most of my time on the internet here in this place. All friends in the Pentax forum, a big greeting from me. See you in the other forum. By the way, my membership in Pentax Forums is Zmohie and the same picture of my son is here. I see you well. I would be happy if I met one of you in Egypt or in the Emirates

Yep to just pull the plug is unthinkable. I will be so sad and angry myself if DPR just dosn't show up in the PC one day and thats it. Thats a lot of information down the drains. From DPR and more so its members. I have thousands of posts and hundreds of threads started. Many of my posts were to help other photographers and took in total hundreds if not thousands (if including pictures shown/taken just for the post) of hours to make. All will be un-plugged April 10th from the internet. Can't be but it is. Amazon what are you doing, or do you know yourself the outreaching damage your doing.

Funny you mention it I will be doing ten day Cairo-Nile tour and five day buisb=ness meeting in Aswan at end of May,

If they cared what we thought, they wouldn't have announced a shutdown in the first place. I'm sure this was anticipated.
I've signed it but I don't think it will change anything. I worked for Microsoft for 10 years and then someone decided the function 9 of us were filling wasn't needed, along with several thousand other people. I like to think customers we dealt with missed us, but who knows. Amazon has decided it doesn't need / want some things that it owns / does and is getting out of them. Maybe it gave itself some time to find a buyer for DPR - better to get something and avoid having to pay people off - but not finding one, it pulled the plug. It's not impossible to get companies like this to change decisions, but I wouldn't hold out much hope

Seems most similar to DPR’s threaded collapsible forum if one chooses the “compact” layout format.

reddit/r/pentax/

I plan to join there to see how things are.

pentaxforums.com is good too if you enjoy really long threads 😊
Pentaxforums is boring. I am following some threads, but nothing interesting is happening there.

Reddit looks like a boring feed, like some Facebook stuff.

But the main problems with shutting down DPReview are three
  1. All the information that is lost.
  2. It is a multi site for all brands an more.
  3. It is a huge community with millions of visits. We all have friends here.

It seems like they have turned off indexing of posts you make. When I look at my history of posts for latest activity, then there is nothing newer than three weeks there. So, that hints at this already was decided more than three weeks ago. Just an observation without any value whatsoever.

It also seems like the main shutdown thread is dead. It has 3800+ posts and there have not been any new posts the last 8 hours. I wrote three posts three hours ago and they are all three of them awaiting moderation. So maybe it is just the moderators that are exhausted or maybe sleeping.

How about getting your oen archives in the meantime :
Rudi.

From Imaging Resource, some inside info it DPR will remain read only for a time. I hope a long time. But I would not bank on it. A quote from Imaging Resource.

"The site itself will be locked and made read-only as of April 10, and while no time has been set for taking everything offline, the clear implication is it won't stay around forever."

So where else do you hang out? Need that source of credible info! :-)

Doug
Nowhere really. I have an PentaxForums account. But I do not find it hangaround-friendly. The DPReview forum browser is just so much better. And, that there are all other brands at DPReview makes it so much more useful.
