Hi folks.

I'm in the market for a gently used R3, and have been looking at a few places including ebay and used camera retailers. I recently saw one with just under 60k shutter cycles on it.

Now I know most people tend to use the electronic shutter, so the first question is does that figure include electronic shutter cycles?

The second question is, assuming the camera is out of warranty, would it be worth buying, at around $1000 off the full retail price, or is that too heavily used at that point? I would be on Canon Pro Services Platinum so repairs would be discounted, but I would prefer not to buy something that will need immediate maintenance.

Knowing that a new R3 has a US street price of around $5600 from a well-known source, the question is, is 60k cycles worth saving $600-800?

Any thoughts are welcome, as are suggestions for questions to ask the seller.

I would pay the extra $600 - $800 and a get a brand new R3. You gain a full Canon warranty, no release cycles, and elimination of the risk of issues. Let's face it, sometimes people sell gear for reasons they may not want to disclose.

Yeah, definitely a valid point. As a combo personal hobby + part time paid shooter, I was trying to economize a bit, but maybe I'm taking it too far.

No don’t do it. You are taking it too far! Any saving now is negated when you want to sell it anyway.

plus there are discounted new R3 below that price if you can source.

even in UK, R3 is down closer to 4k.

Fantastic camera.

No,

With a warranty from a 2nd hand user dealer, possibly - especially a 12 month warranty. From a private seller and no warranty or checks - no way.

In UK at least - one can normally buy from good retailer used at very similar prices to ebay etc. I buy from these dealers.

60k is nothing. I would consider that new and use other indicators for whether to buy or not. How beat up does it look? Ports?

I have software on my iphone that lets me see an estimate of how much use both the MS and ES have. Works on my r5 just fine.

Nothing wrong with new, but i have never used a canon warranty on all the canon bodies I have owned.

The 'Shutter Count Pro' app I use doesn't count ES, only EFCS and MS actuations.

I use it on MacOS, there is an iOS version as well, but I haven't tried that: https://www.direstudio.com/shuttercount/

Nice, thanks. It does mechanical, EFCS and electronic shutter count?

No, it only shows a total for (EFCS + MS), rounded up to the nearest 1000:

damn...

The price difference between new and 60k used is not worth to take the risk, I would say. 60k is not much or rather is nothing as for the capabilities and durability of the shutter. But you never know what did the camera undercome to take those 60k shots.

If you budget is not stretched really to the limit (which probably is not if you consider an R3), then I would go for the new body.

Paramoz in UK. Grey importer but solid service. 3yr warranty. They claim that Canon will service and repair. I got mine there. No issues.

why do you think this is true?
Good question - I was assuming that the majority of buyers for this would be the action/wildlife/journalist crowd who'd be more insterested in fast bursts and/or silent shutter. It seems for other use cases, the R5 would be superior due to higher resolution, but maybe that was a bad assumption.

Why would anyone pay the price of an R3, with its stacked sensor and minimal rolling e-shutter, unless they intended to use e-shutter most if not all of the time?

I have not yet used the mechanical shutter in 10 months!
