Welcome to the Weekly Image Thread!

This thread will appear every Saturday (GMT). If the thread is nearing full before the next Saturday, I may start a new thread and carry on until it fills or the next Saturday arrives and it is reasonably full in which case I will start another. Confused, so am I! From time to time the start could be delayed if I am unavailable.

Although this Weekly thread is in the Olympus SLR forum, we openly welcome users of all brands and models.

Please:

  1. Reply to this post and change the TITLE!
  2. Please reply to at least one other contribution, your replies encourage posters!!!
  3. If asked, please share your processing techniques or technical details.
  4. Please show the EXIF if possible. Please identify the lens used regardless of which camera was used to take the image. This helps people form opinions of the lens used with the body to possibly influence future acquisitions.
  5. If special lighting was used to create your image stating what was done may help others.
Thanks for joining and contributing this week.

If you post a pano that is on its own and not part of set of images feel free to post it as a reply to this post. I will not always have one ready so don't wait for me to post one before you!

The sky here is smoky from western fires. While there are still clouds in the air, the air is not clear. Not nice to be outdoors and no landscapes with nice skies would be available.

So, I have flowers and some insects. I will post the latest ones first and perhaps flowers later in the thread.

Paul posted some nice images at the end of the previous thread and Rich tried to stir up some action with an octopus.

Andrew

not a great result unfortunately. The other flowers have been destroyed by Japanese beetles. We bought a beetle trap but have not seen results yet!

Thanks Paul.

Apparently pollinators do not like lilies. I read that recently. I do not know if that is true but upon reflection I do not recall seeing them on the lilies. They do love cone flowers though and we have those!

I spotted this butterfly emerging from it's chrysalis on my morning walk today. Anyone know the type?

The pictures of the butterfly are delightful, Andrew. I can't believe it hung around posing for you for 6 minutes! They see me and flit away. You even had the right lens with you.

I hate to think of you breathing smoke. I guess this is the way it is going to be in North America from now on and that is a chilling realization. I remember thinking back in January when Los Angeles had those awful fires: What the Hell is going on? It's the middle of Winter. Rich

Nice sky Rich but that sure is one big garden .🙂
Dahlia Garden. I shot this one for the sky. Rich

Thanks and as for the coast it just keeps going for miles 🙂
I like the first one best, Paul. That is an imposing stretch of coast. Rich

A lot of nice flowers in there no doubt Rich. Is that a fair drive from home? Nice clear sky! We have sun here but the sky here is still hazy from smoke. That does not mean it is really smoky, just haze and the air is not pleasant to breath. I did some outdoor work yesterday, used hedge clippers and mowed, and was stuffed up pretty solid for the rest of the day. It does not take much to do that now since one of the medications I have does it by itself, just not that bad.

The wild fires here in Canada have gotten consistently worse the past five years or so. This year we have had less rainfall than normal across the country and that is not helping. We have clay soil on the property which retains water better than the 'tobacco sand' that covers a lot of the county. Our lawns have stayed fairly green but are beginning to brown out. The ground is rock like! I would go out and do some weeding but you can not get them out of the ground in these conditions without them breaking off and leaving the roots. I can weed for a while (tall weeds!) when the soil is moist and it improves the look of the gardens. The low growing stuff really doesn't show so for the most part I just leave it.

We need rain! The spring was pretty wet though so that was good!

Andrew

Thanks Rich.

I have a few hundred taken after the last one Rich. There are a significant number of yellow swallow tails here currently. I have seen one blue one at a distance, one monarch and many cabbage whites plus one admiral. I think the butterflies are suffering the same fate as the honey bees. We still have quite a few bumble bees. Even the wasp numbers seem down.

The corn is tall and the soybeans in the field across the road are as well. No irrigation for either of those crops so they have done well despite the lack of rain. Just enough I guess for them with some night time showers, heavy but brief.
