Ah, whoever you talked to at Fuji is wrong. Ive rolled back between versions. Heck I recently went back to v1.09 after trying out v1.11.

Are 1.09 and 1.11 still available on Fuji's website? If so, I can't find them.

I would only contemplate upgrading to 1.12 from my current 1.09 if I could first find the 1.09 and 1.11 .dat versions.

Would you be able to email me 1.09 and 1.11 by any chance please? (email in my profile).

Also, is there any need to run Fuji's update program that connects to the camera via USB?

Can't one simply format the CF card in the camera and then copy the relevant .dat file to the card in a card reader with Windows?

If so, should it be copied at root level to the card (i.e. not within a folder?)

I have never updated firmware because I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" maxim. But it is certainly useful to have reversible upgrade path available in case of future problems.

Yep, that's what I did last time - in the Root directory

Thanks Adam. I might give it a whirl once I can get hold of a 1.09 and a 1.11 .dat file as fallbacks in case 1.12 is a horror.

Beats me why Fuji don't leave them all on the website. I can flash my motherboard bios with any update ever released just by going to the manufacturer website.

you won't need 1.09 unless you love plasticky images - 1.11 is excellent (Less NR- more like the S3 IMO) - I've not tried 1.12 yet, I want to make sure that they've not upped the NR first even though I can roll back ..

1.11 on its way to you :)

Thanks Adam. Received safely.

I wouldn't be happy to go to 1.11 without having 1.09 as a fallback though. I have an aversion to irreversible upgrades of anything ;-)

I notice Crystal does not like 1.11 and wants the file to revert to 1.09 on the basis of noise reduction and she has expressed hatred of plasticky images on many occasions.

Stephen I'm getting splotchy yellow in the shadows at ISO1600, I don't remember that from earlier firmware. Granted the light was low, but still. I found a good tutorial for removing chroma noise, which works well, but I'd rather not have to do it.

I remember someone once posting a link how to find those earlier firmware versions by replacing the numbers in the url of the most current update on Fuji's website. I'm just too lazy to search, lol. Maybe it was Charles?

Help someone!!
:)

Thanks Crystal

I would have tried playing with the url except for the fact that it does not contain anything that ties it to an update version

http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital/download/s5pro/fupd.html

with similar names as you navigate down its hierarchy to reach the firmware dat file which also contains no version number. Sloppy Fuji!

Shame about the yellow blotches. Many ways to tackle chroma noise, but, as you say, one doesn't want to.

You can download v1.09 from here:

download.fujifilm.co.jp/pub/tools/s5pro/v109/FPUPDATE.DAT

As a matter of course, I archive all the different firmware versions from v1.06 (the one I consider the best base-line version) on up.

Yeah, I was getting inconsistent and frankly often nasty results from v1.11, so I rolled back. I REALLY missed the improved focusing tho. I hadnt realized just how bad the backfocusing was on v1.09 was until I used v1.11. So bad, I was ready to send in my 17-55 in for calibration.

But with the type of shooting I do primarily (night shooting on AP under harsh mixed lighting), I finally couldnt deal with v1.11.

I am going to try out v1.12, but before I do that I am trying to figure out how to test the different versions.

Can you email me the 1.09 firmware? I'm not happy about the chroma
noise at high ISO in 1.11 and want to switch back I think.
Thanks, email addy is via my website.
Cheers,
Crystal
