R1 - recovering from Factory Reset.

Searching through some old post on R1's and flash and came across this thread on your issue with the R1. I don't think it is just the R1, as I have a F717 that has started doing this same thing. Will flash about every 3rd or 4th time and I couldnt trust it either. I tried several "contact cleaning" things descibed on this forum but I haven't tried the pencil trick from this thread. Going to have to try that tomorrow.

I just purchased a "used" R1 on ebay which looks like it is in top notch shape. I just hope it doesn't come to me with the same problem you are/were having on the R1.

In years past I just loved your shots F717 shots with the Sunpac 383. In fact I purchased that flash just because you had it. It was a great combination until this intermitant issue started.

Looking forward to seeing what that 383 will do with the R1.

My daughter owns now my 2 R1's and uses one of them for events photography. It works properly ONLY with Sony flash.
The other one will not work even with the Sony thing.

I the past I shot with the R1 thousands of images with the Sunpak flash. Go figure.

I would love to hear your findings.

You may have mentioned it, I don't remember, but are you still using your Sunpac 383 on your new camera?

If you are, any problem with it on the new one?

I'll keep you posted on my findings. I am a going to go try the "pencil" trick mentioned earlier in this thread on my old F717. The only reason I started looking for a new camera was my 383 was intermitant with my F717 when I had tried everything to clean the contacts except for trying to pencil. Which I assume you tried because you still couldn't get your R1 to work. I really hope I don't have flash problems with the R1. I love using flash. I learned a lot from your post years ago and have experimented a good bit with it.

Just an FYI. Looks like the pencil trick worked for my old F717. Flash firing everytime now.

I guess my wife has the F717 now that it is working I have my newly acquired R1.

I would like to "thank" who ever posted that "pencil" trick if I could remember who did it!

The pencil trick was very intermitant and still can't trust the Sunpac 383 on my F717. For now I put a Sony HVLF1000 on it and it is working great. May just leave that flash on that camera.

Can't remember my Sunpak having problems with 717.
As for the R1, only Sony flash works with it without problem.
My feeling is that the Sony flash cicuitry is somehow too "weak".
