I have problems opening Canon RAW (CR3) files on my Mac Mini M1 running Mac OS 15.4.1 and Camera RAW 17.3.1. I get the following message:

c2adb7bafa8a4d5c9e7d73051affb0b1.jpg.png

I get the message when attempting to open files from several cameras, both R, R5 and R8. Interestingly, the reason why I tried to open the files in the first place was that a friend of mine called saying the CR3 files that he opened on his Windows computer seemed to be low resolution, although at full pixel size.

Has anybody else experienced this?

I misunderstanding this a bit. Are you trying to open it with an app or Preview? I'm set up to open RAW files in PS/ACR unless I drag it into LrC or use DPP.

What happens when you right click on the RAW file. I get this but I was able to open it with Preview. OS now is 15.5. Maybe try and update it.

Or perhaps it's a Permissions issue? Are you running antivirus? I'm not sure what that would have to do with at Mac OS warning but you never know.

I'm trying to open with one of several apps (ACR, DxO PureRAW, Affinity Photo 2), but the message seems to come from Mac OS. Will try to upgrade Mac OS and see if that helps.

What is strange is that I have opened some of these files before, just a few weeks ago, without problems.

15.5 doesn't seem to be available here yet (I'm in Thailand). Annoying if it contains a fix, but I suppose it's just a question of time.

Looks like it was gatekeeper anyway?

It was, but I'm still looking for a permanent fix. At the moment, I have to make an exception for each file.

For the short-term, you may want to consider converting the CR3 files to DNG using Adobe's DNG Converter (can be run on entire folders). I do this regularly as part of my workflow since I am using a very old version of Lightroom which doesn't support CR3.

Thanks. Not only did it work, but after the DNG conversion, I was able to open some of the CR3 files as well. So problem solved, kind of, but I'm even more confused than before.

This is a known bug at the moment. Workaround is to right click om the file in Bridge and ”open in Camera RAW”

I tried to right click with "open with Photoshop" (and other programs) with negative results. No success. Not able to try now since I'm travelling with another computer.

In Adobe bridge?
Yes, and in Finder. Same result. The files converts nicely to .dng with Adobe DNG converter. After conversion, som of the CR3 files open as normally with ACR, but not all.

BTW, macOS 15.5 still has problems displaying QuickLook thumbnails for Canon CR3 HDR-PQ images (see screenshot below). According to an Apple Support advisor, Apple engineering is able to reproduce this issue and plans to release a fix in an upcoming maintenance update.

macOS 15.5 cannot generate thumbnails for CR3 HDR-PQ images
