Offensive language!!

BTW... see how i call it US and not America. There is a good
reason: America is the denomination for two whole continents.
Calling your country America and thereby discounting a great number
of other countries that are also part of the Americas is either
ignorant or blatantly arrogant. I just hope that this way of
thinking will stay off this forum.
This is a joke, right? Otherwise I might think it might be a case of someone twisting the use of language to fit their own particular warped point of view.

And you seem to not like it when other people do that.

And the next time you have a bad day, rather than embarrass yourself here, try a brown cafe, preferably the ones selling the herbal medicine behind the counter.

With all due respect Brian, could it be that you are taking this, and yourself a tad too seriously? Your advice to the OP to purchase a dictionary would indeed do litle more than confirm his correct application of the word in this instance. You see, Brian, the word which you appear to find so offensive is in fact fully explained in several dictionaries - most notably the Oxford Dictionary. In general terms the word is considered to be slang and can be applied to more than one interpretation. In the OP's intended context I suspect, without too much fear of contradiction, that his use of the word was meant to be interpreted as meaning "nonsense" or 'rubbish". Perfectly in line with the Oxford Dictionary's explanantion of the term. That the Forum administrator has chosen to censor the OP in this instance does appear to be on the side of extreme, however the Forum administrator does reserve the right to call it as he sees it, and we generally cop it sweet. In the meantime, I'm sure the entire forum thanks you for your advice concerning self improvement opportunities in our language skills.

Looks like the overzealous US prudish evangelism is affecting this
site now too!
Your religious slur is offensive to me. Even though this doesn't categorize myself, it is nonetheless offensive. Go make comments like this toward muslims, gays, or people of African descent and you'll see waves of protest. But this is acceptable towards those of the Christian faith?!

I believe this kind of slur violates the clearly stated forum rules, if I remember correctly.

If people get so offended by the word cr@p, I wonder if they can watch TV and any movies anymore.

About bad words

well, every language has some.

I too remained quite perplexed while seeing so many people writing them with some artifacts to garble the censoring routine. In Italy we of course use this kind of words, but's really uncommon using them in written language, while I see also on youtube for video comments there are often very trivial expressions used openly.

As someone said, using bad words makes the man poorer. Of course I can understand it in a spoken language when someone is angry or upset, but in a written environment I can't think of it. You have all the time and the way to correct it before posting.

Don't think of me as a "prudish" or "bigot" or something else; as I said I'm much more curious to see this way of acting from other people.

The site has gone down hill the last year and now that Amazon owns it things are going to get worst....

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - ' Wow! What a ride!'

On this forum we can call someone a moron, tell them that their
mother smells of elderberries, and their father was a hamster, and
generally behave in a rude and boorish manner, but we cannot use
basic words like cr@p.
Exactly! And all i am hoping is that this will not get worse. DPR
now being in the hands of Amazon means it is in the hands of a US
company. I hope they will not impose the dubious prudish US
standards on us. After all this was originally a UK run forum.
But well, as all so many others, it has sold out to some US jokers.

BTW... see how i call it US and not America.
All I see is your anti - US undertones thinly disguised in a ridiculous whiney post.

Go figure.
Not if you wish to continue posting here. For what it's worth, the language filter is well established and exists purely because we feel people should be able to discuss photography without the need to dish out or receive insults. Is that so hard to grasp?

If this were a gambling forum then we would most probably allow cr@p but it's not so we don't.

Might I also add - that many non-native English speakers are often
appalled by the extremely poor grammar, spelling and 'language'
used by native English speakers on this site. Perhaps the 'native'
English speakers should set a better example...

Brian
650,000 words, but there always seams to be one that just fits better.

Some words express not only the condition (like you stated above) but the emotion the condition causes.

"My camera broke again" may not do it justice. It really does not show that what you really want to do it throw the d@mn thing down an effing elevator shaft. ;)

I am wondering if perhaps in the future any post with the @ in it will be deleted. I think we could all live without using words that require such tactics, I think we all see and hear these words often enough that they offend very few people. A word like Cr@p seems very mild to me. Dave

sorry i was unaware that was a "photography for children" review...

i won't comment on the point of deciding if cr@p is regular english
or not as it is not my native language and it is a language that is
so widespread worldwide that it seems a bit pointless to have such
debates.

but please... i doubt there are many children on the Nikon
D1/D2/D100/D200 forum.

if you try to tell me that you bought these for ur kids and that
they are too young to hear that kind of language... well nothing
personnal but that will be "faulty material, unacceptable,
blablabla as you like to say" :p
I wasn't saying that my son will come and read these forums, I am stating that there is no reason that they would be blocked if any child wanted to have a look, or do you think that maybe we should ask for a rating to be applied to the site so that PCs set up to "Net Nanny" such as the ones connected to the internet in schools and lots of family homes will not be allowed to visit this site?

I think that it might indeed be "faulty material" of me to give my son a D200 and some lenses before he is even 2, you're right there! :D

Anyway I think that the guy a couple of posts below me sums up what I was think about forums.
