Offensive language!!

Basically, it's American-owned now. So, we'll have the typical american public (largely posed) prudishness with simultaneous high ratings and appetite for violence and sex in movies/media. Blatant hypocrisy; I hate being protected from myself. Wish "cr@p" or any other language were allowed, not censored.
Wow, this forum is really going downhill. I tried to reply to a
post using the word cr@p. Apparently this word is too offensive and
it gets censored.
What is this forum? I thought this is a place where grown ups talk
about photography. Is a word like cr@p not daily common language?
Looks like the overzealous US prudish evangelism is affecting this
site now too!

Yuck! What a load of poo!

Don't feel bad, the website of the Ontario Medical Association in its forum for doctors regularly censors anatomical words, particularly of sexual organs, being discussed in a medical context.

I bought a membership to a motorcycle site to read their reviews, but their message boards are ALSO members only. Now, I have seen probably every word in the book used. No one complained. If someone is a "jerk" they get called a "jerk." period. There is no censorship, if you get out of line and really go after someone you get bitched at about it but there is no reason words like cr@p and what not should be censored.

This "cr@p" prohibition cr@p was there long before Amazon when DPR was a "pure" British site. But I guess even if we were discussing lollipops some people would find a reason to spew anti-American paranoia and generalizations.

Filtering words out is nice touch, great experiment.

Profanities are a way to express yourself, as are any words. Usage dampens their ability to shock, hence their usability dwindles. People will come up with new ones.

One may as well try to stop adjectives being used, people will come up with new ones, as the need for their usage still exists.

Have a look at Orwell, to see what your up against:

"Or, as another example, take the word 'barnshoot' - a corruption of
the Hindu-stani word bahinchut. A vile and unforgivable insult in
India, this word is a piece of gentle badinage in England."

Look these two up - and afterwards you can have a go at "geil" in German. Even a software-program with the intelligence of a mouse will stand a chance like a welk in a supernova, it'll need to look into the future and/or be able to read peoples little dirty minds...

But a word filter still is a great idea - a real challenge to creativity. This tread is a case in point...

that the "beeeps" on American TV programmes ("programs" US) can be rather annoying :-)

..only words.

How you use them is what matters. Sometimes what is referred to as slang or swearing describes something better than any 'high-minded' phrase could ever hope to do. It's not the language of the weak minded, it's not the language of the limited vocabulary, it's the language of our nationality, our history and our heritage. Swearing has been around for millennia and is part of a full vocabulary.

Long live language. All of it, even the bits you don't like.

On this forum we can call someone a moron, tell them that their
mother smells of elderberries, and their father was a hamster, and
generally behave in a rude and boorish manner, but we cannot use
basic words like cr@p.
Exactly! And all i am hoping is that this will not get worse. DPR
now being in the hands of Amazon means it is in the hands of a US
company. I hope they will not impose the dubious prudish US
standards on us.
After all this was originally a UK run forum.
And after all the anti-swear list was already in place at that time.
But well, as all so many others, it has sold out to some US jokers.
All US companies are "jokers" or just Amazon? If so how do you know?
BTW... see how i call it US and not America. There is a good
reason: America is the denomination for two whole continents.
Calling your country America and thereby discounting a great number
of other countries that are also part of the Americas is either
ignorant or blatantly arrogant.
And throwing around blatant and insulting national and religious generalizations is even more "ignorant or blatantly arrogant".
Sorry for the OT subject but i just had to vent some steam.....
Why are you sorry? It must be all US fault...

There was a complaint about the RSPB web site censoring the words **** and shag. Odd given that they are both birds.

I have nothing against America (even not the US!) I love NY and SF. I know many americans personally (North Americans included), great people, very friendly! I do not like american (foreign) politics by the bush administration, but so do my NA friends also not.

And about the beeps. It a bit silly. You can show how people are blown to pieces in a foreign country (live images) but showing a naked breast or saying the word cr'a'p is out of the question.

Lets hope they do not ban the word sicko in the future.

Seems to me your hatred of the US is based on ignorance and arrogance. Please don't base your assessment of all "Americans" on a few, assuming you have ever been here, because I don't think all Europeans are a bunch of liberal degenerates like the few I've met.
