NX20 Initial Use Impressions Part 1 - General Comments

Thanks. The NX20 looks and sounds very promising. I can imagine it scoring very high.
It is too early to give it a star rating. All I offered were my first day impressions.

Those Dan Hicks lyrics just crack me up!
Very appropriate in this context.

the psychology of a stupid person is quite simple to understand. anything it hates has no value nor 5 star rating.

Have you perhaps re-mapped the AEL button to AFL (page 129 of the manual)? I'm just making a wild guess that something like that might account for it.

I will check out the AEL button programming on Monday. Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately, this SME-music-content is not available in Germany because GEMA has not granted the respective music publishing rights.

Thanks! Looks like the same bug my NX200 has. It's annoying, but doesn't happen very often. Hopefully it will be fixed in new FW.
Thus far I seeing the problem in "A" mode with my third party lenses (Contax in my case). It does not seem to be a problem with the Samsung lenses. I still have not been able to recreate all the settings associated with the problem. There does not appear to be a problem with third party lenses if I go to "M" mode but that is not a mode I like using. The problem occurs sometimes and wants to set the shutter speed at 1/1000. I still do not have enough details.

Again, manual focus appears to work ok with the Samsung lenses.
Thank you very much for the review Hank! Can you please clarify about this bug: how often does it happen? Only with third party manual lenses or with Samsung lenses too?
14. ONE PROBLEM – When using manual focus after magnification the exposure locks up and will not change until you turn off the camera. Since I like to use manual lenses about 20% of the time, this is a nasty bug for me.

7. The RAW files are 33-36MB so the same size as the NX200 files.

8. RAW file write seems to be about the same for NX20 and NX200 (basic comparison of release shutters on both cameras after both cameras are focused. The camera seems just a bit more responsive but this could be psychological on my want since I just bought the NX20.
that's a huge disappointment. I was hoping against hope that this would be fixed in the new generation NX20, NX210, NX1000.

At the very least in the NX20.

None of the other major players have this problem in their ISC camera line do they?

Hi,

Thanks for your detailed and thorough comments on the NX20. I was wondering if you've found any use for the WiFi yet. I know 2 Mp is not a lot, but it seems like it should be sufficient for displays at least as large as 1280x1024. Does the NX20 tie directly to a photo folder on sites like Facebook or Flickr, or does the user need to somehow specify a location with a URL or similar path to a network server?

Thanks again,

TTC

No.

Some here might try to say that they are way faster, but that's when you try to monkey around with the reviews and take one shot and not have an intention of going to a second one any time soon. Check out the others and take multiple shots, like people would in real life, and see how well the Samsung works in those situations compared to the competition.

For me it was obvious since the beginning that Raw files would remain the same as in NX200. I said it well before the first review surfaced. Samsung states that NX20/210/1000 have "compressed raw", but unfortunately it's just the kind of compression introduced in the latest NX200 firmware, reducing the size by using 12bit instead of 14bit.

I'm also pretty sure that the processing speed is exactly the same for all these models, included the 7 months old NX200.

NX20 is ridicolously high priced considering that's a NX200 with WiFi, swivel screen, EVF and 1/8000 shutter speed (the latter just with Samsung lenses btw...). No way it's worth more than 650 euro, considering that now the NX200 can be found at 430 euro with kit lens.

Alex,

You are correct in that it does not happen all the time. Today, it only happened twice out of probably 75 shots. I am noticing that I am hitting the AEL by mistake way to often. The AEL button is in a different position for me than with the NX200. This seems to be the only button that I am hitting accidentally.

I do wish you could use another button besides the OK button to enlarge the image. It is difficult to reach with your eye on the EVF. Do you know of any other way to do this. With a firmware upgrade, the Fuji X100 had at least two buttons to use.

Thanks.

TTC,

I spend over an hour yesterday, trying to get the NX20 to connect to my home network so I could transfer files. I got all the software on the PC loaded correctly. But the problem came down to the detailed connection of the camera to the WiFi network. I tried a number of parameter and password and press the button connection attempts. The only thing I did not do was turn of all security on my router (it is in my office). I may try this next.

Sorry I have not tried the other WiFi capabilities yet.

Hank
