My run around with Precision Camera....

I'd take the R1 as a replacement...but only begrudgingly. I'd have to sell all my lenses on Ebay, but I think I could learn to live with only a 4x zoom (I think it is...).

It would be a bit refreshing not to have to worry which lenses to bring and to have a clean sensor all the time. For my use chasing a kid around, having extra wide or extra tele would be only slightly missed.

The R1 is not a suitable replacement for my needs. I am a professional photographer and need the ability to change lenses to get the effect I want. I also need to be able to shoot with a large aperture in low light situations or when I want a very shallow DOF. My lens will also depend on the subject. Am I shooting a head & shoulders shot or photographing a close-up of Billy half-way down the soccer field? I need to be able to do it all. KWIM?

You all know what I'm talking about. Even if I was just shooting for myself I would have a DSLR for the capabilites it gives me. It's so fun! Nothing wrong with P&S. It's just not what I need and it's not the type of equipment I would enjoy using now.

I have no doubt you can get great images from the R1. My first digital was the Minolta 7i and it was great. It was just limiting. (No buffer, slow to write RAW files to card, no sync port, view finder was terrible, couldn't save custom settings, fixed lens so I couldn't shoot wide open on the long end, I couldn't get the shallow DOF I wanted, etc.)

I've already switched to Nikon. I was preparing to make the change before they announced they were selling to Sony, but I had been waiting to see if they were going to come out with a new body with more MP when they made the announcement of the sale. I had no problems with the 7D, it's just that I needed a higher resolution when I photographed groups that needed large prints. I wanted more detail in the images. I also wanted more leeway if I decided to crop into an image and then print large. (Frankly, I prefer the 7D over the D200's, but I had to upgrade.)

So for them to exchange my DSLR with a P&S is just worthless. I couldn't resell it for anything, and I have no use for it. I had planned on keeping the camera to use for personal stuff.

I'm ok with the offer of a 7 year prorated refund. (Assuming they actually figure out the refund over 7 years. We'll see....) I think it's fair. If they can't fix it, and they don't have an equal or better product to replace it with, then cash is all they can give.

I don't remember how much the 7D's were when they first came out. Around $1250? If so, I should get almost $1000 back since the camera was only 14 months old.

our cameras have a 7 year life? and if it breaks in there it will be prorated?

I know prorating sucks with tires!

I agree even R1 can't replace a DSLR in 7D's caliber. By offering a P&S for 7D, sony is either clueless or really cheap. The reason I asked about R1 is that it is the least they can do at the moment because A100 is not out yet. BTW, I played with A100 brief in the SonyStyle store in my local mall. I have to say I think 7D is better than it in terms of build quality and handling.

I know many of you use RawShooter, and for those like myself who had purchased Premium, we were bummed when Pixmantec sold out to Adobe.

Well, just a couple of days ago I received an email (and I'm sure all you RawShooter users did too) from Pixmantec.

The part of the email I loved the most was (and I'm paraphrasing) "RawShooter users are now Adobe customers, regardless of whether or not you'd purchased any other Adobe products....Your satisfaction matters to us....", and that Adobe will be offering to previous users who purchased RawShooterprior to 12-July-2006 a free download of Adobe LightRoom 1.0.

Now THAT my friends is how a company maintains customer loyalty!!!

I know RSP has its pro's and con's, and I'm not trying to make a quality of product statement here...what I like doesn't mean someone else has to like it..and vice versa. But, whenever I upgrade my workflow suite of software, who do you think I'll be buying from?

My camera is still under the Minolta extended warrenty. I'm assuming they may offer prorated refunds for those Minolta cameras that are under warranty, can't be fixed and that they have no equal or greater product available to replace it with. I image if your camera is out of warrenty and they can't fix it...then you are SOL. Needless to say, I wouldn't buy a new 7D because you'll be lucky to have it repaired.

That's my guess. BUT, they weren't even sure who I was suppose to be talking to, so who knows how the last warrantied cameras will be handled.

if they get one to accept it, then it sets a standard.

EXACTLY Ditto. (Except) I'd probably go with Canon's 5D. Saw a shooter at a wedding and it looks good enough.

For now, my mind's eye is seeing an 8 or 9D, however named!

position then simply say that and why you dont think it will work.

Your attitude is the same as those early on who kept telling all of us that the 7D had no issues. Now look where we are! A 2 year old cameara with no future or parts!

Again you I believe you are entitled to speak towards the contents of the post as to whether you belive it will work or not, but not to make it personal and be abusive by calling us ignorant!

So when it does happen or we wake Sony up and even though you did not help, we will still let you join in!

It's been about 4 months since Sony "took over." And people are screaming for lawsuits. I didn't jump on the bandwagon for a firmware petition and I don't see much understanding of the difficulties inherent in this kind of business change.

Nor of the practicality or the likely results of a suit.

If you want to bail on the Maxxum mount, do it now, while there are still people interested in hanging in there. Some people have done nothing but complain since the cameras came out. And before they came out. And now about the way Sony is trying to resolve complaints.

The first one spends his/her hard earned money and makes sure the manufacturer gives them what they paid for.

The second spends their hard earned money and just accepts it.

Glad you brought up the complaining, the situation now even more, validates the complaints. People complained early on that there were issues of BF. Instead of supporting them they were told that they just did not know how to use the camera. Then flash issue, again learn to work around it. Then the first shot dark issue, oh it' s just your camera. Then the out of the box AS issue. Ell it's not the user and some of dont feel that a 1500 investment should become useless in 18-24 months.

You see it has been an ongoing camera problem (that Sony is now responsible for) and all I am trying to do as a consumer of their product that they bought is not let Sony leave anyone with an investment that 18-24 mths old and cannot be repaired. That is rediculous in my opinion.

Even Sears provides parts longer than that!
