My run around with Precision Camera....

I have a 7D with a loose sync port that didn't work. It is covered under the Shake your Money extended warrenty.

5-4-06 - Mailed body and copy of warrenty and invoice to Texas like instructed on Minolta's web site. They forwarded it to Precision Care.

5-17-06 Logged at Precision Care as received.

5-22-06 Repair started.

The following week I get a letter telling me how much it will cost. I call them to explain it's under warrenty and a copy of the paper work is with the camera. Not good enough. I have to copy the paper work again and mail it to them. (I wasn't happy.)

6-24-06 Logged as "Repairs Finished"....then it also says "Ship Confirmed" tracking # "In Route to Terminal".

7-12-06 I finally call Precision Camera. They said Sony was going to replace it and to call them at 800-222-7669. I call that and they told me to call Minolta at 877-462-4464. I decide to call Precision Camera back and this time the girl tells me that she'll have her program manager email Minolta and tell them to get in touch with me. Apparently Minolta is going to replace the camera. (So they say...) I asked her what the problem was with my camera body and she said she didn't know. (They sync port was the only problem.)

---So what is the deal here? Has anyone else received a replacement bodies from Minolta when they couldn't repair the one sent in?

I'll update as I hear something. Any advice welcomed.

Yes, but at the time that is the address they gave on their (Minolta's) website and it was the same address they gave me when I called. Why in the heck didn't they give me the address to CT in the first place?

We certiana;;y were spoiled with Phil Bradon! But it looks like their decision to refund instead of repair, may be in our futures.

Hope it works out for you!

I called Sony again and the lady wanted me to call Precision Camera. I explained what was going on, so she forwarded me to a different Sony customer support person with a new Event ID#.

Finally, a person that had the answer! They were going to replace my camera with a DSCH5 (sony). I told her I had no need for a digital P&S. She then told me they were offering a prorated refund over a 7 year period. Now I need to fax my purchase invoice in for them to determine how much money to send me.

I purchased the 7D in Jan,05 for $1690 (as a kit, so this price included a lens). I'll update when I get a notice on how much they will offer as a refund.

h5??? that is unacceptible!!!

Hopefully they are quick and good with the refund! Hopefully it will be > the $800 or so that it costs to get the 7D now (so you can pocket the change;)... if you still want to stay ;(

best of luck!!

Consider..T17-50/2.8 + S30/1.4 + T90Macro + S70-200/2.8 + Bigma/T200-500... all stabilized?

AS/SSS rocks!
lens reviews and more on dyxum.com!

So, they are halfway there, but why wouldn't they just offer a better offer as a pro-rated credit to the A100??? It costs them less, keeps a customer, and gets their product out in the market (free advertising).

Paying cash out is essentially like buying cameras, and they are in the business of SELLING them last time I checked.

I can't believe they want to replace it with a point and shoot.

When they bought my 5D back, they gave me my full purchase price. But then again, mine didn't work from the day I bought it so there really wasn't any depreciation.

As a 7D owner...if this is how a replacement would be if my 7D goes bad, then my decision will be to turn the broken 7D into a very expensive paper weight...and convert to Canon and forget Sony!!!

The scene is getting very 'dark'. Maybe the 'darkside' is getting to be the brighter choice.

A pro I know (www.artketchum.com) switched from film to Olympus E-10, etc., and then to a Pentax when them came on the DSLR scene. Though IMO no match for all we love about the 7D, it seems to have a wide array of lenses (including legacy, MF, etc.) from the prior Pentax systems.

The battery of the A100 is just a start of moving further away from Minolta. (Could that have been KM's battery of choice?)

Sony should be able to get this 'service' issue settled in a day or two. Wouldn't really need the same effort that they put into their 'grand' pre-release web presentations. Minolta had a weakness (marketing), but not in the service department! Let's hoist one for what we used to have!

wow. I got an updated status on precision saying ship confirmed a few days ago. I was wondering why my camera is not here as yet. I will be very mad if they offer a point and shoot in exchange for the 7D. In fact I will sue.

I would be upset too if they offered me that deal. Since my 7D broke I've been doing a little research and visited a couple of other forums and they are doing some buy backs on the 7D and 5D now for the ones they can't fix. People are just sending in their invoices and they are getting their money back. Of course I don't want a Canon or Nikon I just want the camera I had orginally bought to work!! Mine was returned from Precision last week still not fixed and was told nothing was wrong with it. So I'm still waiting on the email back from Sony and plan to call them today and complain.

I think prorating out to 7 yrs is a commendable action. Better than the pro rating on my automobile battery...LOL

One thing no one has suggested is to also check your states (or the principality where one purchased the camera) consumer protection laws/agency. Some states have laws which go beyond the warranties that come with consumer goods. Especially "Lemon laws".

replacing with the A100 would be fair. It has less, and more!

Pro-rating for me would be big bucks as I paid 'full boat'. I agree with other posters who suggest that they swat out the 5D/7D for the A100. People are starting to jump ship again - can't say that I blaim them.

In spite of my 'bigger' hands, the A100 would be a fair piece for me. Would keep me 'on their ship' and save me the drudgery of eBay'ing stuff. If I were in the market for a DSLR and heard the 'news' that "we're now making" in these posts, I'd be dissuaded from a Sony. If Sony handles these issues to relative satisfaction, who knows?

Is R-1 acceptable replacement for 7D?

My personal opinion is....only way I'd change is for an upgrade to the D7. Personally, and just my own opinion, is that the 100 is a D5 with a larger sensor (and the dust cleaning...and a couple other thing). I had a choice between a 5D or the 7D when I bought my 7D, and I went with the 7D for the ergonomics. I love the camera layout with the knobs and all. I see other dslr users who have to do the menu search for some of the simple things we have right on the camera body.

So...only replacement I'd personally accept is the Sony's 7D successor and nothing less (and I'm willing to pay extra besides the prorating amount). Otherwise, I'm off to Canon 30D-ville.
