Thanks Edward In Toronto for hosting the last challenge “Compositional Balance”. Lots of great submissions, I'm still in shock at being #1!

This week's Mini Challenge is about Distorted Perspective . Any unusual perspective and/or natural distortion (i.e. not by post-processing) that makes it difficult to perceive what the original scene was, while presenting an interesting composition. The more unusual and abstract the better.

This is something I sometimes try to do, but rarely succeed at, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you creative geniuses can come up with. Even if you are not feeling like such a genius, give it a whirl, you just might get lucky (like I did!).

I'll show a few examples in a separate post, just to get things started. Don't feel constrained by my meager examples however; use your imagination. There are no "wrong" submissions.

The challenge will end in one week, on Thursday, July 29th at 8 pm Pacific Daylight Time.

The Rules

The host gives you a topic of interest and you get going. You post your image(s).

The host chooses the winner. The decision of the judge (the host) is final. The judge is not eligible. The winner then chooses the next topic, judges the winner, and passes on the baton to that person.

Any picture you've taken is eligible regardless of time taken and camera.

You can do all the post processing you want. However, it is most helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo (because we like to know)

Feel free to comment on other contestant’s images. If you want someone to leave you a piece of constructive criticism, put an asterisk next to the title of the image.
Here are some posting guidelines:

When posting your picture, change the Subject of your post to display your picture titles. This way, when someone comments (i.e. replies), it will refer specifically to you. If all entries read "Re: Mini Challenge xxx"... it would be very boring to scan the list.

Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).

You may enter up to 3 pictures, but try to put them within a single post. Please give a title to each photo - this makes it easier to differentiate when giving comments.

Please size your photo no bigger than around 1200 pixels on the longest dimension. This is to let those with smaller monitors to see your image at full resolution.
Please limit the file size of your entries to conserve bandwidth.

As a show of courtesy, and to save bandwidth, please remove the original post when replying, so you don't bring back any previous photos.

Some examples:

A not particularly well executed example of geometric perspective distortion:

Unusual perspective: Fouga Jet engine intake. Wish I'd caught the full reflection on the left. This was from several years ago (with my first P&S) before I learned to look out for such things:

Reflection in a stream. I wish the rocks in the stream bottom came out more clearly, it would have added interesting visual ambiguity to the image.

Lets see what ideas you can come up with!

That's a great topic - one must have the "eye" for such kind of shots! Unfortunately I don't have it :( Anyway here is my entry (I don't even think it fits the topic..) - a police car's reflection in a puddle... :)

Actually, there are possibilities with that shot. Try cropping just the splash around the front wheel. The tear drop outline of that splash, with its symmetrical reflection, might be interesting. Carefully cropped and taken out of the context of the overall image, it might have just the right degree of visual ambiguity and odd perspective I'm hoping to see.

I remember when you first posted this shot. It gave me the hebie jeebies then and it does now. Your explanation of how you set up the shot still makes me laugh!

Keep 'em coming!

There are some interesting and difficult to comprehend shots so far, which earn extra credit as far as I'm concerned. When this is all over, we will have to get some explanations from the photographers, but don't tell us yet, keep us guessing!

BookaShade, you mentioned not having an eye for this sort of thing. That is exactly why I chose this topic, because neither do I. I try but rarely succeed. I'm hoping to learn a few new tricks from everyone elses submissions.

Hehe, I think it's not a matter of tricks, I'd say it's something you must be born with :)

It's indeed a good topic and I'm sure the best shot is yet to be posted...

You are right, however it is taken with a RebelXT which is a 8 mgpxl camera and the image resolution will become too small, or will it not? BTW that's an already cropped version..

Hi again. I had to change profile names because I lost my password in the process of switching computers.

My entry:

Backstage at Rock Werchter, where roadies are preparing the backline of the next band. This is a quick edit with Picasa (cropping, saturation) because Lightroom for some reason exports my photos with the saturation all wrong.
Possibly more to follow.
Feedback is appreciated!

Preparations are made. Now just add hundreds of volunteers, 80,000 fans and 4 band members...
