Help with getting HSS with a Godox MS300, XProF trigger, and manual lenses.

Hi guys, longtime lurker here, and recently tried to get into flash photography for any future needs (product, studio, etc).

I bought a Godox MS300 on a teachers recommendation, and since I used the XProC trigger in class, I bought that. I tried it out, and it worked well, plus I could get HSS on an old 5D Mark II body.

Since I use Fuji 99% of the time (I have an X-Pro2 and an X-H1), I decided to return that one and get the Fuji one, the XProF. It arrived today, and it works great on manual mode (what I mostly use since I use 95% manual lenses), I can't get it to use HSS. I already checked the FP flash settings on my Fuji, I tried with a modern (electronic) lens, and have been messing around with it for the last couple of hours, but I can't get it to work.

I also have a Mac, so the firmware update option is more complicated, but as far as I know, its all up to date.

Anybody have any ideas I haven't considered??

Yes Godox firmware is a bit tricky to update. They have different software for different items. But it is manageable.

Anybody have any ideas I haven't considered??

No. I can confirm that HSS works with my TT 685 F and XPro-F trigger. What does not work is the AF assist beam.

Flash function should be independent from the lens.

I still don't have an answer, but I ordered an X2T trigger and am going to try with that. I hope that works, if not, it doesn't really have too much of an effect, but I'd love to be able to use all the features possible.

Update, it didn't work either. Maybe it doesn't work with the MS300, even though it worked with other triggers.

HSS is not possible. The MS300 cannot perform HSS. It's a manual-only strobe. With the 5Dii, you might have been doing hypersync or had it optically slaved to an HSS-pulsing master, but over radio, the Godox MS300 does not perform HSS and never will. The only Godox strobes that do HSS over radio are the speedlights, the AD strobes, and the QTII series of AC strobes; they're all IGBT-controlled. But the MS300, like most of the AC-powered monolights Godox makes, are voltage controlled.

To do HSS, the camera, trigger, and flash all need to be HSS-capable. You've only got the first two of the three.

The MS300 has no firmware upgrade capability, any more than any of the other AC-powered strobes (QTII series, aside).

Get a Godox HSS-capable strobe or speedlight. An AD200 Pro is often recommended for its versatility. If you want to go with speedlights, I would recommend staying away from the TT600, V850 II, or V850 III single-pin manual speedlights. My XPro-F on my X100T cannot get them to work in HSS, but HSS works fine with my TT685 TTL-capable speedlights. X1T, if upgraded to v3 and has the appropriate C.Fn turned on might be able to, X2T with C.Fn SHUTTER set to LEAF might be able to, but it all seems pretty iffy.

That seems about right. It probably was Hypersync, thanks for the response. If I do want HSS I'll buy another flash, but not right now.

No worries. This is the Godox page for the MS300.

The fun thing to note is that a new MS300 costs exactly the same as a TT685: US$110.

No, Godox sells single pin manual versions of of the TT685 and V860 called the TT600 and V850, respectively.

The TT685 and V860 do support HSS. You just need to set the camera to FP mode in the flash settings menu.

The issue with the V850 is that unlike the V860, it does not support HSS as an off camera flash when triggered by the X-Pro-F. It seems to be a bug.

Nope. I mean the V850 II / III, which are the li-ion single-pin manual speedlights. While they're single-pin and manual-only on a hotshoe, the built-in radio transceiver inside allows for group, M power, and HSS control from a Godox X transmitter for most shooters. For Fuji shooters, however...

For a Fuji user, it's much harder to use them in HSS, but it is possible.

They all work fine in HSS with any other "flavor" (Canon, Nikon, Sony, MFT, Pentax, etc.) of Godox transmitter but for Fuji it'll only work in HSS if you have an X1T-F transmitter, firmware updated to v03 or later, with C.Fn-11 (or maybe it was 12) set to 1 or 2.

1. To add the support of FuJIFILM GFX 50s camera.
2 . To add C.Fn custom settings. The transmitter's parameters that set by Godox APP are not changed. And the transmitter is only for triggering (set C.Fn-10 to on).

1. To add the support of X100F, X100T cameras. Reach to 1/1250s high-speed sync in shutter (all unclosed groups must be set to M mode).
2. To solve the problem that when the TT600 and V850II are set as receivers, flashes cannot be triggered in high-speed mode (all unclosed groups must be set to M mode).

No, it won't work with the XPro-F. For some insane reason, they never migrated that bug fix over. The X2T does have a SHUTTER C.fn for Leaf shutter compatibility (like 1.) but there's no similar setting for the other fix. [facepalm]

This is why I said "I would recommend staying away from the TT600, V850 II, or V850 III single-pin manual speedlights."

HSS and the XPro-F works fine with the TTL-capable speedlights: TT685, TT685 II, V860 II, V860 III, and V1.

I've followed the discussion and I know my assumption is wrong, I just want to know why!

I am using an A7c II, the tiny Godox OLED X3s trigger and a Godox MS300V.

I can set the trigger to HSS and thereafter the Sony allows higher shutter speeds, the flash fires and unlike my manual on camera flash, it doesn’t result in black borders from the shutter on the pictures, but it seems the flash is too early or too late

Before finding this discussion I had hopes I only set the speed too high

Can someone explain, why a triggered flash needs HSS? Doesn’t the trigger just tell the flash, when to shoot, while HSS happens between the camera and the trigger? I've followed the discussion and I know my assumption is wrong, I just want to know why!

Basically, the radio trigger just acts like a cable connection between the camera hotshoe and the flash. The camera still has to electronically "talk" to the flash, so they can synchronize the timing correctly. Only the camera knows the duration of the exposure and to tell the flash when to start pulsing and when to stop. The flash has to be able to understand those signals.

But all an MS300V can "hear" are the signals to fire (sync), the signals to adjust the power level in M, and the signals to turn the modeling light on/off. It has no ability to "hear" TTL or HSS commands. So, even though the camera can say them, and the transmitter and send them, without the light hearing/understanding those signals, you won't get TTL/HSS.
