Do I really NEED another memory card?

that whole 'want vs. need' thing just doesn't phase pack rats like me!

I think you are right, I am investigating PSD's (sounds like a social disease)and figuring out what I will need before my next vacation.

No. Three should be more than enough. In practice now that's
another issue And I'm still laughing from other thread—David
David & Theresa,
I get by with two 1GB and one 256mb cards, but carry a 40GB storage
device that I rigged up. As for the other thread David, we won't
go there. I got up this morning and found out you can't go there.
I found it very entertaining, planned on looking to see what
happened. :(

I think I will start learning about portagle storage devices for
travel instead of more cards.
Theresa, I guess it's entertaining until the shoe is on the other foot. So much for free speech!!! For storage, I went the cheap route. I bought a shell (case) on eBay for $19.00. It came with a battery pack and all the cables. I then bought a used 40GB(I could have bought bigger) notebook hard drive on eBay for $25.00. The shell/case even came with the screw driver to put the hard drive in with. It works perfect and sure beats lugging my Laptop around. It's not as fancy as the Epsons and others, but it gets the job done.

I have three, relatively fast (80x Lexar and Ultra II), 1G memory
cards. But the deals look SO good right now. How much memory do
you really need?

I bought a device called a Wolverine Flash-pac.

Cost less than 2 1gig cards (at the time I bought it) $150 (US) and holds 40 gigs.

Rechargeable battery, slots for ALL popular cards: cf type 1&2 & microdrives, sd &mmc , memory stick -memory stick duo-memory stick pro, smart cards , and xd.

simply turn it on, put in the card, press the copy button.. 2-3 minutes per gig. It will copy all files, then turn itself off. Battery life is GREAT.. ( I havent been able to kill it in a single day of use)

EXTRA! The manual doesnt say so, but if you leave it plugged into the usb-2.0 while the computer is running.. it charges itself while off from the USB 2 line, so if you get a "break" during your photo-day, you can just leave it hooked up for a while to refresh the battery (LI-ION).

The bonus is, it seems to charge faster from the USB 2.0 connector than it does from the wall wart charger.

Same dimensions as a pack of American ciggarettes except thinner. I carry it in the vest pocket of my lightweight photo-vest (made from a fly-fishing vest)

You can't go wrong with a 4GB Ultra II from BH for $179. I have used my PSD a few times, but the last time it went out on me. Flash cards are almost indestructable, and at the price we're at now, very worth it IMO. I plan on picking up a 4GB after the next paycheck, giving me a total of 5.5 in Ultra IIs. I've stored at most 5GB on my PSD at one time before transferring over, so I should be alright. If you could swing it, 2 4GB cards would be golden, especially at Ultra II speeds. 288 RAW files on one card makes me giddy. :-) Though misplacing / losing one would hurt pretty bad, which is why there is the camp of people that buy no more than 2GB cards, but carry many of them.

which has made me hesitate about going that route. I am surprised that they are staying pretty expensive while memory prices are dropping dramatically.

This is a great thread - it points out the little psychological pressures(?) we feel from better prices & new toys on the market.

I have:
1- 2GB Extreme III
1- 2GB 80X WA
1- 1GB 80X WA

But... when I saw the Extreme III prices the other day, it really tugged at me. Seems like just a month ago (guess it was 4-5 months) I paid almost $250 for the Extreme III 2GB card from Arlington. I was ecstactic to get it -they were unavailable in the US for awhile.

But even tho I can easily shoot 1000 images in a day - if I put in long hours shooting wildlife, I am well covered with PSD's. I have a Wolverine (mine is quite slow), and a PDX70 - lightning fast, both 80 GB.

I have to laugh at myself for thinking I needed another card just because they are far more affordable now.

Get a PSD, Theresa! You'll love the flexibility it gives you.

While 1 do have both the Wolverine & the PD70X, I really wouldn't recommend the Wolverine. Although it has been awhile since I've seen it discussed, Alex (Alekko) knows as much about the PD70X as anyone around this forum.

I have dropped mine several times, stepped on it, and it got soaked in a rainstorm.

It did quit working a couple of those times. I simply opened it up took out the battery, and re-inserted it. The battery can make a bad connection if the unit gets "banged". The battery is the same size and shape (same voltage too) as the battery in my Oly C-770 (different contacts though).

A single thickness of "masking tape" across the bottom of the battery cured this problem, a ten second cure.

It is a USB 2.0 hard drive, so it needs to get some respect, but the only way I can make it fail is to smack it around with the battery not taped.

I even had it knocked out of my hands by a horse while it was copying files and it landed on a concrete floor (3 foot drop) and it simply continued to copy files.

Working around horses means ALL my gear needs to be rugged, or short lived..those are my choices.

I cant say enough good about the Wolverine.. (no I have no connection to them) and it is not the firs storsge device I have had..It is the only one Ive had that continuously has worked for me.

It doesnt do anything else...it just copies and stores files from flash memory. Its little 1x2 inch screen only tells you which button to push (there are only 2 buttons - ON/OFF & copy). When transferring files to the computer you only need to turn it on, it is as fast as any other USB 2.0 hard drive. When you are done moving files, if you turn it off, it charges itself (not even mentioned in the manual).

I have an earlier model CompactDrive (PD6A) that I really like, and have been off and on considering the newer/faster version (CompactDrive PD70X outside the USA, Hyperdrive HD80 inside the USA). Features that I like include:
Fast at copying cards in the field;
Ability to upgrade disk drive (I've done it twice so far);
Fast at copying cards in the field;
Uses AA batteries to minimize # of charging cables;
Uses USB mini-cable that my E-1, S1, and other readers use
Did I mention it is fast?

The one feature of the new Hyperdrive I dislike is they dropped the Smartmedia support, but I already have a SM-> CF adaptor.

The hyperdrive web site is: http://www.hyperdrive.com

If you wanted a device with a screen, the one that I have my eye on is the Jobo Giga Vu Pro Evolution, though I'm not sure if they support the E-300 raw files (they do for the E-1). It has a screen to match the Epson, but it has some support for photographers in the field (ability to use CF wireless cards to upload photos and the ability to set IPTC tags in the EXIF field so you can add notes to the image after the fact).

Strange. I basically babied mine and one day a couple weeks ago I just turned it on and it would click click click click and show me a failure notice. Now it won't spin or initialize. Of course, it could just be my recent luck that I had a bad copy, hard drives do go bad afterall. It worked well for 4 months, I must admit. And was very convenient.

I try to KILL everything I buy (photo-gear) BEFORE i TAKE IT TO AN EVENT...

Missing an hour (or an afternoon) can cost me 150 - 300 shots... and I usually selll around 30% of what I shoot (keepers for me run at 50% but the customers can decide they dont look good in that PUCE shirt with the PURPLE kerchief wheather the photo is good or not! dont they OWN a mirror?? )

Although I have a PSD, TViX Mini C-2000U, that needs an external power source, either from 230V or 12V in a car, I rather skip a PSD solution.

With a 4GB card, I have plenty of space for days of shooting, and in the evening I empty the card onto my Laptop. I do want the daily feedback of the photos, as well as I anyway normally do carry the Laptop with me in the LowePro CompuTrecker AW. The only reason for using the PSD, would be if I had no access to the Laptop. Without a laptop, I would still miss the daily feedback of the pictures, but I could bring the video cord to display on available TV-sets.

However, in future, I would think a multimedia device like the EPSON Multimedia Photo Viewer P-4000 80 GB with a big LCD screen is far more useful then just a simple PSD, like my TViX Mini C-2000U.

Think minimalistic, what gadgets can you skip. For me it's the PSD with it's power plug transformers.

I have also heard that the 80 gig Wolverine is slow...The longest my 40 gig has ever taken to copy a 1-gig card is 2.5 minutes, which I thought was FAST!

perhaps its the drive they use, 'cause the electronics seem the same.

Newer Wolverines are much faster than the older ones. I think the older ones which were re-badged Vosonics X-drive II's would take something like 30 minutes to copy a one gig card (maybe its 60 minutes, because it basically had a 2 hour battery, and I think it could copy 2 gigs in that time). The only PSD slower than Wolverines was Media to Go.

I just got off a 24 hr. call and apparently missed a fun thread!

Thanks to you and Michael for the P&S advice on a previous thread and also, Best Buy had 1G UltraIIs last week for around $57. I picked up 2 (3 total now) and have also been thinking about the PSD option--especially for travel.

. . . . do you have any field info that says your Ext III is actually faster than your Lexar 80X ?

I ran some "simple" tests a couple of days ago that showed my 80X to be faster.

See here . .

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=17184559

I emailed my data to SanDisk asking them if my data was in agreement with their testing, or if I had a defective EIII. They have yet to respond, other than giving my tech support request a case number.

Regards . . . .
