I'm a little leary of messing with something that seems to be working pretty well for me. At this point I'm not convinced I need this upgrade. Anyone else out there have any thoughts on this? I expect if I was going to eBay the D200 I'd go thru the trouble of upgrading it just to say it has the latest, greatest, fastest, sexyest upgrade on the planet!! Otherwise, my dog is sleeping pretty well so I think I'll just let him lay.

Takes 5minutes, painless, do it and move on.

If you don't need the added features listed below, there is no point in upgrading. I have no intention of upgrading, as I don't need the new features. If/when there is new firmware that actually "improves" performance in some way, then I'll upgrade. Even if you disagree, wait a while to see if there are any bugs that come along with this new firmware before installing it.

New Features of Firmware 2.0.0:

1. Image authentication item has been added to the setup menu. The optional Image Authentication software is required to authenticate images.

2. A Wireless transmitter item has been added to the setup menu. This item is available only when the optional Wireless Transmitter WT-3 is connected to the camera.

Nikon have been known to use upgrades to introduce undocumented fixes with firmware upgrades. The change from 1.0 to 2.0 suggests that it is a major upgrade.

The fact that Sigma lenses now work correctly is an example. The improved focussing on the last D70 upgrade is another.

Install it and move on.....

I'm more at home on the computer side and "undocumented features" scare me. As often as not, they're either experimental or shortcuts to help the programmers do their work. Usually "undocumented" also means "unsupported."

Until Nikon announces that there are other features in the upgrade or a lot of people here find them, I'm staying put. Never buy version x.0

The improved focus for D70 was annonced.

The AF-ON button error was caused by wrong implementation in the Sigma lenses. But you are right, this was not annonced. Anything else?

I was being sarcastic - for me undocumented features = bugs!

You say to never buy version X.0 of anything, well that is exactly what you, and I and many others, bought with the D200. If you follow your own advice then you shouldn't of bought a D200 until this new 2.0 firmware came on all production units shipped.

They're talking about improved VR with the 18-200 (which I have) and improved shadows, so I think I'll go ahead and do the upgrade. I wouldn't have bothered for the announced new features, but it sounds like the unannounced features (or undocumented features) are useful.

Yes, there seems to be some unreported bugfixing in the new ver. 2.0, so I will do the update too. But, it's better to calm down and let the guys with the itchy fingers do it first :-)

It is quick, easy, and worth doing.

Be sure that you copy only the "A" version to the CF card, do the upgrade, then delete the "A" version and replace it with the "B" version and then do the upgrade again. Then verify that you have 2.0 for both A and B.

Bob, I seem to notice that my 70-200VR is snappier for autofocus on bird shots. Before it wanted to do one "hunt" before locking on. Not since the upgrade. I admit that this may be my imagination, but I do not think so. Have not tried it with the 18-200VR yet.

I generally apply all upgrades, because in the past Nikon did more than just the major "announced" changes or improvements -- and the posts above demonstrate this is another example.

But you are right about the bug fixing element :-) why admit
liability for a problem when you can fix it while implementing
newly documented options.

Regards.

Brian.
Precisely!!!

Good advice here. I just upgraded mine. Who knows what else was fixed? This is common for all computer and camera manufacturers.
