*** CTF Challenge 81 – Perspective Disproportion ***

The sun was setting really quickly so I had to set the camera on 3 frames per sec to get that shot, my first go at action photography:-)

I've had to go back to square one with this bleeding new fangled camera. With the G2 I normally turn it on then make a cup of tea & I'm ready to shoot, but with the new camera it wants to take a picy as soon as the switch hits on:-)

Everyone said

"Go on Rod get a Dslr you have a reasonable eye & you will take some nice shots with it"

But what I'm finding out is that a good eye is not enough, you need some intelligence. So Paul stick with your point & shoot mate.

So to take good shots with a DSLR you need a large dose of intelligence eh?

I've seen your shots so far Einstein, let me know when your IQ reaches double figures, i'll buy you a cold one.

Don't sit on that plant......

I meant you not me, I took the camera off auto to night & put it in P mode. Tomorrow I'm going to try manual focusing.

I have tried my best to explain the reason why so-and-so photograph is off-topic and in most cases posters' have considered the suggestion/point and either replaced or removed the photograph after reaching to an agreement.

i understand this topic could be a little confusing but after these many comments, explanations, examples and most importantly entries in both categories...it should be fairly clear now. i am planning to move some photographs from eligible category to pending in a couple of hours 1200hrs (us-central) that are clearly off-topic and have more than 24 hour old comments.

i really hate to do it, and i hope posters dont take it offensively or personally...imho it will be less confusing to a new poster to have only on-topic entries in galleries for reference.

thanks for your consideration.

From the Australian National Dictionary Centre:

---start citation---

galah

The word galah is a borrowing into Australian English from the Aboriginal Yuwaalaraay language of northern New South Wales. In early records it is variously spelt as galar, gillar, gulah, etc. It is first recorded in 1862 in J. McKinlay's Journal of Exploration in the Interior of Australia: 'A vast number of gulahs, curellas, macaws... here'. The bird referred to is the grey-backed, pink-breasted cockatoo Eolophus roseicapillus, occurring in all parts of Australia except the extreme north-east and south-west. It is also known as the red-breasted cockatoo and rose-breasted cockatoo.

Snip

Very commonly in Australian English galah is used to refer to a fool or idiot. ... snip ... and the Australian meaning must be a transfer from the bird, no doubt incorporating a judgment about the relative intelligence of the bird.

Snip

From this sense arise a number of colloquial idioms. To be mad as a gum-tree full of galahs is to be completely crazy. To make a proper galah of oneself is to make a complete fool of oneself. A pack of galahs is a group of contemptibly idiotic people.

This will enable you to translate the interactions between Rod and Paul into english. They can be quite quite humorous for those english speakers with facility in foreign languages.

Then we can all be happy little vegemites.

I'd like to make just two simple points:

1: Abstract, as the host of this challenge you are the proper and sole judge of what's on and off topic. If you deem a photo to be off topic then off topic it is. Moving it to pending is the proper action. There should be not regrets or hesitation if you choose to move an off-topic photo.

2: IMHO we as a group have gotten way to much concerned about what's on and off topic. I say leave everything where it is and let the voters decide. Are we loosing the bigger picture of learning how to take better pictures for the sake of picking nits?

Hi guys,

Just to let you know, I will most probably be off for a couple of days due to a situation that arised here.

My Mom is in the hospital since yesterday. She needs a pacemaker and while she looks ok, it is needed rather urgently. She was admitted thru the ER, is now on a room and I've been in charge of all arrangements, so I'm dead tired.

I'm in no mood for photography right now, but who knows...

I'll also most probably neglect to comment.

Best regards,

Nugar, of course your mom comes first. It sounds as if she's getting good medical care and should be doing well in no time. We will miss you and your helpfulness while you are busy tending to more urgent matters. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Peace--

I have to agree wholeheartedly with your point #1.

Regarding point #2, I have to disagree. There have been times that my photos have been off topic (or too large?) and either I deleted them or they were sent to pending. This made me learn that there are certain criteria for the challenge, thus the definition of "challenge". But in the end, if you choose to participate or not, you learn your photographic skills, what you envison and want to accomplish, and the limits within the boundaries set by the host. I believe, for me anyway, that this forum should challenge everyone who participates. If photos were to be allowed helter skelter, I think it would be a disservice to the voters and to the host who painstakingly set the criteria. I would also point out that participants in the challenge are not the only ppl who may vote - thus the host should be judge and jury as to what entires are eligible to be voted on.

On a second note for example, with the eligible photos we have criteria as to the date the photo can be taken, the size of the photo submitted, and the brand of camera. If we were to turn our heads to the criteria of on topic across the board, then I do not see where this challenge has any point at all as the "challenge" would be lost.

I fiind many of these challenges difficult - but oh well!!! I will learn which is a service to me. Let's not forget the word "challenge" and all that entails.
