Ladies and gentlemen, it really is that easy; let me explain.

I wanted to accomplish two things:

1. Make the challenge topic easy for everyone.
2. Draw attention to the frame of the picture as a compositional element.

So don't look for anything hard in this topic. Just "find" a triangle, follow the rules, and create interesting compositions.

..in the viewfinder, it is defined as "found".

A triangle can be a triangular object or is can be a triangular shape seen in the viewfinder as formed from all the lines and shapes you "find" there.

..that you can't see a triangle in the viewfinder.

I'm not implying anything conceptual or abstract about "seeing" or "finding".

When you look in the viewfinder, you should see four lines of the frame forming a rectangle, right? In my meaning, those are "found" in the viewfinder.

Then of course, you see other lines and shapes and depending on what you are looking at, you will recognize them for what they are naturally. (heads, eyes, houses, maybe even a shape such as a pyramid with its triangluar sides). You can also see other shapes from combining these natural shapes and objects.

Imagine you see someone's arm sticking out of a window. What you see are the lines of the window and the lines and shape of the arm and the lines of the viewfinder frame. Where those lines meet or cross, a "found" shape such as a "v" or "L" shape will form at the intersection. Three such lines might form a triangle or other shape. Just look for those shapes.

Or make it easier on yourself and simply photograph a triangluar object.

Well it looks like I glossed over the description a couple of days ago and started myself out on a crooking steep and windy trail looking for images when I didn't need to. To be honest, now that I have found out I can walk down a straight suburban sidewalk in my quest for images I will be missing the thrill of the winding trail I already started walking. I can continue down that trail (making the real triangle as a whole touch the frame rather than put it in the sweet spot). I won't get many votes though in comparison to the balanced compositions using cropped triangles at the edges to fill out the requirements.

I may be done shooting for this one unless I stumble over something new, but glad I could contribute to the gallery some

Simply crop so a diagonal line intersects two adjacent edges of the frame for an instant triangle.

Some will argue that this is not "found" but it is the same as cropping in the viewfinder and is acceptable.

I meant I was reading post rather than writing posts. I did just finish the Twilight series though. Had to see what al the hype was about.

Here is an example of "finding" triangles in the image. Here are marked by red outlines or solid fill ins identifying some but not all triangles in the image. Some are naturally formed and some are formed partially by an edge of the frame.

You should not give up & continue on your winding road because when you do find a scene wiv triangles in you can just make one of them interact with the edge.

I've been looking for the simple triangles just using one straight line to combine with the edges & still haven't come up with a picy that's not a cliche, so it's not so easy.

Plus you have a bigger viewfinder & can make bigger triangles than us croppers

I'm still in mate It was a nice day in Seattle today and I used it to scout out new locations to shoot for whatever when the light is right. I ran into a few triangles here and there and may post some when I get around to processing.

The bigger viewfinder is a disadvantage because it makes the images harder to stuff into 200K ;-)

Just put some masking tape around the edges of the viewfinder & you will have no problemo's in downsizing. The other advantage is you get a 100% image in the viewfinder then a. I just knew there would be disadvantages in having a 5D11
I suppose all your shots today were done wiv the new flash

I'll try the masking tape trick Rod Nope, no shooting with new little flash today. I was trying to just find some new spots around town to shoot from where maybe a million other people haven't. I ate a sandwich for lunch on a semi-private beach and discovered a Great Blue Heron liked to hang out there. I went back at sunset and of course the tide had come in a lot and covered up most of the rocks and forced me too far away with the reach of my lens. I got there about 10 minutes too late for the best light too. Anyway I took a few shots and think there is potential in this spot with a different tide and more color in the sunset. Result below- I think I see triangles in the mountains

I remember I always used to log in my memory places that I needed to get back to when the light will be better but this time around in picy taking I don't seem to do it as much.

Now you know about the Heron & tides it will be something to get back to for sure as the light wasn't helping you in this picy but it came out well with the Heron silhouetted on the rock. Did you use your 1.4 converter?

Thanks Rod and Penny. There's plenty of stuff to shoot in Seattle alongside all the legions of other photogs. I'm hoping to find more tucked out of the way spots to shoot if possible.

Yeah, I enjoy finding these places Rod and do make the effort to go back to them sometimes. Of course more often than not things don't come together for the right shot- persistence is what it takes. I wish I could install little video cams in these spots to know how the light and conditions are developing before I head off to them. Those rocks the heron was on in that picy can be walked out to at low tide. Then my 200mm + extender (which I was using) would get me by.

Having your lenses at their correct focal length now does it make you start thinking of buying a 300 or 400 lens. Our 200 on a crop camera gives us 300 plus that we take as being normal so I was wondering if you get used to 200 being normal on your full frame.

When I was last into photography I had a 28mm 50, 200 & a 2x converter I never felt the urge for anything else.

Well with my situation you need to consider the processing crop factor. The same lenses had more reach on my 30D crop camera, but the full frame has 2-1/2 times the 30D resolution. I can easily do a 100% crop now (some say even 200%) and still have good IQ. So I feel I have even more reach than I did before now that I am using the full frame and of course I have more on the wide end too. That said, only if I got into shooting more wildlife it would be nice to have an even longer lens. For the most part I feel pretty satisfied with what I have now. If cost and weight weren't a concern I might want some faster glass on a couple of lenses I have.

Now that's an interesting point that you can crop & still have an 8 or 10 megapixel image taken from your 21mp. For some reason I can't crop to lower resolutions after paying for the megapixels I have so I feel as though I have to have a full 10mp image every time.

I have one more camera purchase left in me & that will be the successor to the 50D so I imagine it will be 15mp yet I will want to have a full 15mp in each image to justify the upgrade, even though I'm quite happy with the 10mp I use now.

I think I will have to brush up on some philosophy books to clarify what's happening here a

Happy Mother's Day to all you Moms (and would be Moms). Hope you folks gave that special someone, be it your Mom, Gran, Sister or Friend that extra bit of special attention.

We should be nice to Mums & Dads all through the year not on one day allotted by some marketing person. My kids & me buy or not buy things for our luved ones throughout the year & pay no attention to these silly one day celebrations.
We do like burfdays & Xmas but.

Of course we should, most definitely.

Sure I like to surprise Mom and Dad on those none highly targeted marketed days.
It's more fun when it's unexpected like that too.

But I do use these so called days to remind myself to give those people you don't normally think about all that often some more special attention. Like the nice old lady clerk at the local grocery store which you see once a week. We give her bday presents, celebrate the woman's day of her native country and whatever other personal or religious holidays there are. The more the merrier
