Okay, here we go…

This is the official thread for Challenge 96.

Thank you to Fremiet for a truly fun challenge. I loved seeing what everyone came up with. You guys do amazing work!

The results thread for Challenge 95 is here:

As a perpetual ‘also ran’ participant, I did not have any good ideas of my own prepared, so I went to a thread Nancy (odigi) started a while back on potential challenge topics. It can be found here (let’s keep it going… :)):

Thank you Nancy!

There were several ideas I liked, but the one I decided to go with is…

Challenge 96: “Found in a Kitchen Drawer”

===================================================

This can include typical kitchen utensils or tools, or (if you’re like me), other odds and ends that you might keep in a junk drawer in your kitchen. Heck, I’ll even throw in kitchen cabinets. Look around, see what you might have hidden away, put things together in an expected way; get creative; but most of all, have fun.

I realize a lot of people are busy this time of year, with holidays and whatnot. I’m hoping that this will be a fairly easy challenge for everyone to enter if they choose. It’s wide open, so get thee to your kitchen…

Challenge 96 is open from now (about 11:30 pm Eastern Daylight Time) on June 30 2005, and will run until 10:00 pm on Tuesday July 12 2005 Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

GUIDELINES

These guidelines are meant to help things run smoothly for all... and to serve as a handy reference to answer common questions. Thanks for reading thru all this stuff again:
  • Up to three (3) images are allowed in each of the two galleries (Eligible and Exhibition). Each photographer can choose whether to enter one or more photos per gallery. This should generally accommodate everyone's personal style and approach to the challenges...whatever works best to make the challenge more fun for you.
  • You can enter photos anonymously if you want to. If you do, I'm asking you to send me an email indicating your identity for any anonymous entries. My address is in my forum profile.
  • Collaborating on entries is also welcome. An artist can be involved in up to three collaborative efforts in addition to the usual three single images allowed in each gallery.
  • Those who prefer to have critiques of their photos be more "critical", feel free to mark the image title with an asterisk ( ).
  • Please put your name (identity choice) and a unique title on each of your image thumbnails. It really helps to keep voting problem issues to a minimum.
  • Please resize your images to no larger than 800 pixels on the longest side before uploading to pBase... can be larger if a panoramic image. This cuts down on too much usage, and it helps to preserve the quality of your image upload for best viewing.
  • Please keep your questions and concerns posted in this thread for best response. One of us will address them as soon as possible.
  • Challenge time period will run from now (about 11:30 pm Eastern Daylight Time) Thursday, June 30th, 2005, thru Tuesday, July 12th , 2005, at 10pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Time tables will be posted in the galleries. A separate voting thread will be posted shortly after the end of the Challenge period.
  • Eligible images must be taken with a Sony digital camera...& within the challenge time period. The winner of this gallery will host the next Challenge. All entries should include a date indicating when the photo was taken..."exif" data attached would be ideal (if available). "Exif" data is a big help to a lot of viewers for a variety of reasons. If the "exif" data is not preserved, try writing it into your caption (by referring to the original photo's "exif" data that should be available before doing any photo processing). At the least, please include the date the photo was taken on all the eligible photos. This is a popular request...so I'm passing along your requests here. THANKS, everybody, for your friendly cooperation.
  • Exhibition images can be obtained with any camera at any time. If you do not want to host the next Challenge, this is the gallery you should post your images to.
  • I'll post a link to the challenge 96 gallery page as soon as the galleries are set up.
  • Here’s a link to the main stfchallenge galleries page:

And here's a link to the how-to-post-to-the-galleries gallery:

So come on everybody, search your kitchen, look inside those drawers or cabinets, join in and enjoy!

Your images do not need to be shot IN your kitchen. You can take whatever you find in your kitchen and shoot it outside or elsewhere if you choose...

spoons, knives, forks, tongs, spatulas, cookie cutters, graters, corks, napking rings, napkins, tea towels, beaters, can openers, coasters....and so on...

--Melanie

You really deserved this win. Now you get to do all the work. For what it's worth, there's nothing 'also-ran' about your work... but I do understand the sentiment. ;-)

I love this theme and it couldn't have come at a better time. I was just fixin' to force myself into trying to learn how to do some Still Life compositions. I'm not very comfy with it, so it's something I really need to do. Things from a kitchen drawer is a great place to start.

I type faster than I think - and no, I am not a fast typist, just a slow thinker. So please excuse grammatical errors and typos.

.. is this challenge also going to be a post-processing feast, as the #95 obviously was?
How much PS is too much? Or it's "do your worst" case again?
Thanks!

'The art of photography mostly consists of being in the right place at the right time having the right equipment and the right attitude'

As with most of the STF challenges (including the last one), people are free to use as much or as little PS as they choose. I'm certainly no purist when it comes to photography. I appreciate all forms of this digital medium. Simply do what you like to do :).

--Melanie

Of course I meant 'put things together in an unexpected way' (or an expected way if you prefer :))...

--Melanie

Thank you for the kind words Nancy :). I hope you have fun with this, I know you'll come up with something cool and interesting. Actually, I thought this might be a good time for this theme, because maybe thinking about it will give me the motivation I need to actually clean my kitchen. It's a pretty scary place...

nothing to see here, folks....

...a challenge 'first' here. Images showed up in the eligible gallery before any have appeared in the exhibition gallery.

...and you'll probably be in your kitchen for part of that time, so look for photo ops :).
