Okay, here we go…

This is the official thread for Challenge 96.

Thank you to Fremiet for a truly fun challenge. I loved seeing
what everyone came up with. You guys do amazing work!

The results thread for Challenge 95 is here:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=14085132

As a perpetual ‘also ran’ participant, I did not have any good
ideas of my own prepared, so I went to a thread Nancy (odigi)
started a while back on potential challenge topics. It can be
found here (let’s keep it going… :)):

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=13689831

Thank you Nancy!

There were several ideas I liked, but the one I decided to go with is…

Challenge 96: “Found in a Kitchen Drawer”

===================================================
This can include typical kitchen utensils or tools, or (if you’re
like me), other odds and ends that you might keep in a junk drawer
in your kitchen. Heck, I’ll even throw in kitchen cabinets. Look
around, see what you might have hidden away, put things together in
an expected way; get creative; but most of all, have fun.

I realize a lot of people are busy this time of year, with holidays
and whatnot. I’m hoping that this will be a fairly easy challenge
for everyone to enter if they choose. It’s wide open, so get thee
to your kitchen…

Challenge 96 is open from now (about 11:30 pm Eastern Daylight
Time) on June 30 2005, and will run until 10:00 pm on Tuesday July
12 2005 Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

GUIDELINES

These guidelines are meant to help things run smoothly for all...
and to serve as a handy reference to answer common questions.
Thanks for reading thru all this stuff again:
  • Up to three (3) images are allowed in each of the two galleries
(Eligible and Exhibition). Each photographer can choose whether to
enter one or more photos per gallery. This should generally
accommodate everyone's personal style and approach to the
challenges...whatever works best to make the challenge more fun for
you.
  • You can enter photos anonymously if you want to. If you do, I'm
asking you to send me an email indicating your identity for any
anonymous entries. My address is in my forum profile.
  • Collaborating on entries is also welcome. An artist can be
involved in up to three collaborative efforts in addition to the
usual three single images allowed in each gallery.
  • Those who prefer to have critiques of their photos be more
"critical", feel free to mark the image title with an asterisk ( ).
  • Please put your name (identity choice) and a unique title on each
of your image thumbnails. It really helps to keep voting problem
issues to a minimum.
  • Please resize your images to no larger than 800 pixels on the
longest side before uploading to pBase... can be larger if a
panoramic image. This cuts down on too much usage, and it helps to
preserve the quality of your image upload for best viewing.
  • Please keep your questions and concerns posted in this thread for
best response. One of us will address them as soon as possible.
  • Challenge time period will run from now (about 11:30 pm Eastern
Daylight Time) Thursday, June 30th, 2005, thru Tuesday, July 12th ,
2005, at 10pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Time tables will be
posted in the galleries. A separate voting thread will be posted
shortly after the end of the Challenge period.
  • Eligible images must be taken with a Sony digital camera...&
within the challenge time period. The winner of this gallery will
host the next Challenge. All entries should include a date
indicating when the photo was taken..."exif" data attached would be
ideal (if available). "Exif" data is a big help to a lot of viewers
for a variety of reasons. If the "exif" data is not preserved, try
writing it into your caption (by referring to the original photo's
"exif" data that should be available before doing any photo
processing). At the least, please include the date the photo was
taken on all the eligible photos. This is a popular request...so
I'm passing along your requests here. THANKS, everybody, for your
friendly cooperation.
  • Exhibition images can be obtained with any camera at any time. If
you do not want to host the next Challenge, this is the gallery you
should post your images to.
  • I'll post a link to the challenge 96 gallery page as soon as the
galleries are set up.
  • Here’s a link to the main stfchallenge galleries page:
http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/root

And here's a link to the how-to-post-to-the-galleries gallery:

http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/how_to_post

So come on everybody, search your kitchen, look inside those
drawers or cabinets, join in and enjoy!

There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.

I'm very sorry to hear about your internet troubles, I hope they get things cleared up soon. And I hope you can participate, I'd love to see what you come up with.

If you were asking if I'm a girl, then yes, but I'm afraid I spend virtually no time at all in a kitchen :). I chose this topic because I had no ideas of my own ready to hand, and I thought it might be interesting to see what people could come up with when they focus (:)) on mundane subjects.

Ooooh, sounds great Rajesh, I can't wait to see what you come up with! I really like the spicy entry you put in exhibition. Yep, your kitchen is definitely more interesting and tastier than mine.

Hello Awais,

Sorry to hear about your troubles, although it's good to know that your government is working to provide alternatives.

The sizes you've uploaded are fine, and with these subjects the sharply detailed parts cover a relatively small area, which helps a lot to minimize JPEG file size.

The only thing I would add is that, with future entries, it is a good idea to keep the image pixel dimensions ( including any frame or border that you have added) to a maximum of 800 pixels on the longer side (i.e. anything up to 800 x 800 pixels). This will prevent PBase from generating the "large" viewing size, and will give people viewing your entries the best possible detail as well as containing file sizes even further. The "large" view (when it exists), like the "medium" and "small" ones, is always degraded relative to the "original" that you upload.

By the way, I've removed the duplicated upload of "Pure Fork", which I assume is what you wanted us to do.

I hope your normal service is restored soon. I've been having my own problems, over the last few days, with a telephone cable fault caused by possums in the walls of my house, so I can appreciate your difficulties! ;-)

Regards,

Mike
