Bit of Fun :Lens for a FF future

Everyone is assuming a FF DSLR to the last man. Are people ruling out a FF mirror-less and lenses to match? Maybe Pentax, maybe Ricoh? They said any FF Pentax would be 'different'.......
I don't take it for granted that an FF camera will be a dSLR. I've written elsewhere about the alternative of a MILC FF with an EVF, using a short-registration mount but with a glassless adapter to K-mount registration to take all existing lenses.

But statements from Ricoh/Pentax are interpreted as ruling that out.

And if the dual body Dlsr idea is true that smacks of very different, The concept of a progression to the 'pro' FF body smashed in one release, and people can concentrate on what will improve their hobby for them rather than keeping up with the Jone's.

It would work really well for Pnetax/Ricoh at this stage with no regarded 'pro' services worldwide.

But whatever the design as long as its K and brings new large long fast glass to the mount I'll be happy :)

If Pentax doesn't give us wide primes, which i doubt, it will be Simon's 14mm and the 24 tilt-shift. Both Samyang!

Same as above. If there were a market for this lens, it would already be in production. Birders never found a lens too long, even on APS-C.
Didn't Canon launch a 200-400/4 + 280-560/5.6 for the low cost of 11000$?

I'm certain there is a market for such a lens, but at what price, given that the old one still goes for 7000+?

- What?!?!?! No love for the FA-J 18-35? :P

Lol!

Indeed, Pentax/Ricoh are ruling out a FF mirrorless.

"Even though there was possibility to bring FF into this segment, it was our conclusion that APS-C should be the utmost size for mirrorless segment."

"First, we are discussing development of FF SLR. We are touching base with a sensor manufacturer and proceeding the process of development towards production."

Hi Alex,

I actually suspect you're right - I too expect a DSLR first - but I wouldn't discount the possibility quite so strongly, even if it's under the Ricoh badge. The odds are shorter than they once were. Your text should be in the past tense.... Pentax 'ruled out' a FF mirror-less. That interview is over a year old. They never explained why they reached that non-sensical conclusion about MILC sensor size. There's no technical limitation to the size of a mirror-less camera. There was strong competition in the APSC (and smaller) mirror-less sector. And there was none in the FF mirror-less sector. Then. Go figure.....

The market has since evolved. FF sensors are cheaper. Sony is already offering four small mirror-less FF cameras and Fuji is rumored to be heading that way in 2014 with the fixed lens X200. I suspect the Sony's will sell well because they've no competition on either feature set or price. They've probably gained an upper hand in the FF MILC sector by being first. I once hoped that Pentax would do it, but now subsequent manufacturers entering the FF mirror-less market will have a tougher time. Just like it is with the FF DSLRs.....
Anyway back to the DSLR assumption....... I notice that no-one is calling for wide primes - wide FLs are all appearing in these wish-lists as zooms. Pentax currently have no prime that will cover FF wider than the 31mm Ltd. I'd like to see a 24mm and another WA around 18-20mm. I'd like lenses that are sharp corner to corner, have low light fall off, are resistant to flare and have very low distortion. Sort of like the DA 15mm f4 Ltd but in FF. I'd be happy for it to be physically bigger and f2.8 or f4 (again) if the IQ is stellar. I won't be interested if they me-too Canikon with large 24/1.4 lenses that weigh 600gms and cost $2K.
Things will happen, in time. I'd guess their capacity to be no more than 4-5 new K-mount lenses per year (not counting updates), but with Ricoh "pouring resources" who knows...
Yes, I expect they'll arrive in time. I was just surprised at how few of the people responding identified WA primes as lenses they'd be interested in for an FF camera.
And still no-one wants TS lenses? 24mm, 35mm and 70mm please! Alternatively please give us a quality TS adapter that takes Pentax 645 lenses. I have absolutely no idea why they haven't offered one already.......it's such an obvious accessory. No more shift-only lenses please - tilt is essential.
Special purpose lenses would be last, probably.
Agreed, but they're long, long overdue. The only one Pentax made was the original 1970's K series. Long before Canon sensibly added tilt, long before digital, and long before shift could be achieved with PP. I've met people who've gone to Canon purely to access their TS lenses. C'est la vie....I suppose.

Cheers, Rod

If i were Sony, i would not sell FF sensors for use in MILCs. That would be cannibalism.

A DFA 20mm f/4 Limited? Small and filter compatible. Why not share filters with the 31? :)

At the time of Launch there would be

.........
I don't use Limited lenses now, and probably won't if I buy an FF camera. I suspect most people who buy an FF camera will be the same, although a very vocal minority may give a different impression.

I would want top quality zooms, especially at least one long zoom. (I don't need f/2.8, at least to start with).

The old M 20mm shared filters (49mm) with the 50mm standard lenses.

I would think the DA* 300 f/4 would be adapted to FA first.
What do you mean by "adapted"? In my tests it is already an FF lens. (Upgraded to HD?)
I would think that any DA lenses currently in production that will adequately cover FF will be rebadged as FA (or whatever ricoh wants to call them). The only two this would likely impact would be the 200 2.8 and 300 f4 primes. They may get the HD coatings in the process.

We'll have to wait some more to see what will be different in the Pentax FF(*) ! With the launch of K-3, I bet it will be interesting, at least with the AA on/off feature :)

Anyway, I'd like to see too a high quality WR UWA FF lens from Pentax if a tilting sensor is meaningful. Otherwise, a 15mm or 17mm Tilt-shift would be great : UWA on FF and wide enought on APS-C ! And with the expected 1.4x TC ... TS 15mm, 22.5mm and 31.5mm with one lens and two bodies :) Next ? The TS 50mm (50mm, 75mm and 105mm) ! LOL With a macro lens design, we'd be covered ;)

For a start, the old Pentax SMC Shift 28mm f/3.5 will be more interesting that it is now on APS-C ! I like its ergonomics, but it's not usefull enough : not wide enough on APS-C and too clumsy on a Canon FF with the adapter ... But it's truly amazing how convenient it is to correct perspectives : you just need to turn at the expected angle and to shift quickly at the desired step in order to achieve the correction needed ! All that with one hand and no need to lock the lens in any way :) Fast and efficient ... but I'd like to see if Pentax can add tilting with a clever design !

Regards, fredg

PS (*) : For a FF mirror-less, I'd rather bet on Ricoh's brand than on Pentax ;) And a GR+ will be fine for street photographers and Leica's aficionados ... even better with head-up display and tilting screen if possible !
