I was today on a major event from a camera store (big one at VA region), and the Nikon representative that I know was there, also the Canon guy with a Mark III demo.

I teased my Nikon guy friend about the June 1st (Canon III date), and he told me that Nikon will have a BIG answer for that around fall, and will be BIG.

He was the one that gave me some tips around the D200 launch day.

I'm loving my D2x! I would love a Nikon pro-body with great high ISO performance, and better dynamic range.

A D2xs with better high ISO performance, and dynamic range. That's it. Forget the resolution (12 MP is enough!). Forget FF--I don't care.

The sad thing is...I suspect there will be a fall 2007 announcement, but a spring/summer 2008 release!!

By that time many Nikon pros will have been forced to switch by their clients and or their agencies. If they are going to have a fall releas,e they had better announce it before the MK III ships. Once these pros sell all of their glass, they won't easily switch back, no matter how BIG that announcement is.

I personally will wait, but I am only a semi-pro and I usually shoot for a newspaper. i have enough resolution and low enough noise now.

My sister's next door neighbour's babysitter's cousin's dog walker says that her nephew's father's cousin's uncle is a Nikon rep and says that they have always released new models and will continue to release new models. Why do so many people have brilliant revelations of the blatently obvious?

You are absolutely right!

I recently bought (paid but not yet received) a D2Hs on e-Bay. The owner is planning to switch to Canon & buy the Mark III. She's also planning to sell her 400 2.8, D200 a few other stuff.

Canon already has an edge in High ISO performance over Nikon. Though, I bought D2Hs, I have/ had tough time justifying paying 2-3k for a 4MP camera. (And I know all the arguments about quality fat pixels & 4MP is enough, etc. But still, is it worth 3k?) Mark III sounds very promising compared to other D-SLRs available today.

So, once people will make the switch (which has already begun), it will be difficult to bring them back. And that is going to hurt Nikon big time, this time.

"Many Nikon pros will have been forced to switch..."

If your equipment is doing what you want it to, and mine is doing what I want it to, and countless others are getting the results they want to, what in the world makes you think any Nikon users will be "forced to switch"? You're caught up in the hype, now get out there and take pictures.

I don't know why people have to be so sarcastic when new release related information is shared.

The reason he might have shared it with this community is because:
  • Every one is anxiously waiting for Nikon's next release.
  • He gained/ learnt a lot from you guys. And he wants to give it back.
  • To avoid others making impulsive decision & switch gears.
If you don't agree, read & move on. Why do you have to argue or fight. You don't have to kill the messenger!

Thanks!

YES!

it is nice to get a bit of a tease every once in a while, even when the intelligence may not be so credible.

the thing that keeps these bloody posts on the front page is idiots whinging and whining about how there are so many these posts etc.

and hey, if you really dont want to hear about the latest rumour, why do you read the thread? most of these threads have pretty obvious titles... the answer is taht you want to keep up on the goss, like everyone else, ya doofus!

I agree and disagree with the forced to switch theory. While some may have to switch to cannon for FF most don't HAVE to. Noise is a different beast. I shoot weddings with a d200. VR doesn't help that much for sharp pictures of swaying b&gs. For noise control on any camera you must nail exposure and someitmes that means boosting iso. Less noise=more keepers=happier clients-more money=etc.

Not a troll just stating facts. I love nikon and might ADD a cannon but never switch. I will need the nikon stuff while the cannon gear is in the shop most of the time! (From what I have heard)

Back in May 2003 I wrote this:

"I was at a Nikon demo in a pro shop here in Stockholm this morning. A Nikon rep told us, without us asking, that there will be a new high speed procamera (D2H, i guess) released before the world championships in track and field in Paris this summer. He didnt know any specifications, or anything about an D2X. He told us he was only allowed give hints about the high-speed camera. Take it for what you think its worth - just passing it by."

And you know what - it turned out to be perfectly true. So sometimes people dismiss rumors to quickly.

BTW there is a new world championships this year, around august-september - in Japan.

It will need to be at least 3000 native pixels wide,
instead of present
"2464 x 1632 [L] (4.0 million)"
That's what the pro news/celeb agencies stipulate.
6MP should do it.

I agree.

In fact, after a release one can always go back and search the posts on this and other forums, and one will always find a few posts that are (more or less) spot on. Some of those can of course be pure guessing, but others you can tell they "knew" what they were talking about, since even "the fine print" turned out to be correct. By now, I have 2-3 posters I listen very carefully to, when they write about future releases.

Probere necesse est.....

I also love my D2x, but there are some situations in which my D2x does not fullfill my needs.

Especially high iso noise above ISO 400 is not as good as I would like. For these situations I have ordered a Mark III, which are indoor kart races for me. I really need a high iso performer here... Those karts travel at 75 kph in bad lit places. Primes are not very effective there, so I mostly shoot my 28-70 and 70-200. The black asphalt really has some very bad noise in it. Even when I deliberately expose to the right. Also for the indoor shootings the Mark III also will be very fine.

For the rest I will keep on using my Nikon gear.

For me it really does not matter which brand I am shooting. As long as it fullfulls my needs.

Overall I think Canon has got the edge in proffesional D-SLR at the moment. And Nikon has to bring a monster D3 range to fill the gap. Otherwise a lot of pro's will switch I am afraid...

III sounds very promising compared to other D-SLRs available today.
There are already people selling 1D mkII's for low $2K's. I've heard a few people selling them for around $2200.

I couldn't imagine purchasing a 4M digital camera, unless you were a professional and knew that your pictures would only be used for news print and you didn't want to deal with larger files.

Still, depending on what your purposes are, maybe 4Mp is enough.

There have been similar rumours every few months for about three years to my knowledge.

I made a decision earlier this year that any future purchasing decisions would be based on what i could see and touch, and preferably after Phil's review was published.

I recommend everyone else does the same and ignores rumours in the mean time, fun though they may be.

Like I stated in the previous post - 3000 native pixels on the longest side is now the norm.
Same for major news organizations as well.
