Answer from Nikon to III

As usual, I wasn't clear on what I meant, but you didn't read the follow up notes I wrote, or you are ignoring them.

I meant to mention those pros who are sitting on old equipment that may not be reliable for much longer and those who have been pressured by their clients- the editors of magazines, etc.- to get more pixels.

I will not get rid of my Nikon equipment anytime soon. It works just fine for what I do. And I will NEVER switch to Canon.

Apparently, there will soon be an announcement from Nikon this week on product. According to jeff-c. I hope they sneak a body announcement in there!!!

Certainly a good point for sure. What bothers me is we hear of "pros" switching to Canon but never hear of "pros" switching to Nikon... I am sure this is happening but not at the rate of the "to Canon" switch. Just doing the math here will tell you that at some point either (past already) or just (about to be pasted), Nikon became a non player in the sports shooting arena.

I don't think anyone will argue that there are way more Canon setups at major sporting events then there are Nikons. This has to say something. We can all argue about the Nikon look, ergos, dependabiltiy, price point, great lenses and other things until we are blue in the face.. The bottom line is the pro market is no longer chosing Nikon as their first choice..

For me, and I have stated this already, since I don't shoot sports and mostly don't need low light performance. My D2Xs is the best there is for what I do.. Me switch.. Hell no.. for what? I'll pit my D2Xs against any dslr in the studio. None will prove they make a better looking image for what my output is..

If I somehow find a job that has me shooting low light sporting events I would be on the waiting list for the Mark III...or... Nikons newest "low light marvel" if that's in Nikon's plan for the future...

Have you guys been watching the total and complete transfirmation of the one time "I bleed for Nikon" Greg to Canon.. It's amazing to watch.. Look at this latest posts.. Now remind you.. Greg has been a Nikon dude for YEARS.. now he doesn't shoot his Nikons anymore...

It's really amazing to me.. and something that needs to be looked into.. Greg is a highly respected shooter here in DP land..

Nah, every couple of years when Canon announces a significant upcoming release, the same sort of prognostications get made. Eventually Nikon also announces a significant new release and wouldn't you know it, most people never did switch brands, Nikon's new camera flies off of the shelves and the world goes on.

Personally the only thing I'm looking forward to right now is watching the 5D cheeleaders start howling about their noise issues once the APS MkIII hits the streets.

oh, yes, sporting events... right, as today 80% minimum of photographers use Canon gear to shoot.

Another example: come to Italy for the Milanovendemoda (fashion Fair) and you will see much more Nikons than Canons... In the fashion/glamour world of photography, where hi-ISO is not necessary Nikon rule.
I think there are more pages about fashion in magazines than about sports....

I am happy that you are pleased with your new Canon gear. We've known each other a long time here, but I have to tell you that you seem to take jabs at Nikon at any chance you get. Are you angry with Nikon? It's gear, if Canon works better for you great, buy you have changed to the same type of canon person you hated to deal with when you shot nikon. It's become boring, but if thats what makes you feel better about changing, so be it.

Anyhow, I am happy you have found the gear you like.

Yes and but for these reasons.... wouldn't most people have switched already? I am no longer buying Nikon products - after all the frustration and dissaapointment I have had to deal with for the last few years. I just hope when I have saved up enough to get a decent Canon body my lenses will be worth enough to get me the basics of what I need to shoot with from day to day.

it's a lot cheaper to add a new D2X to the old one and have two (or
three) of these instead of selling all (used) lenses and buy some
10,000-20,000 $ worth of stuff new, adding the difficulties of
working with a totally different camera that slow your work...

That quote is wrong. Depends on what you shoot. This Billboard I shot with a D2X. It looks a little flat because I didn't change it to sRGB for web. Client was very happy and I have worked with them many times on different adds since.



This image was shot with a Fuji S2. Again I have many images on the 2007 Jim Beam callendar.

This is my daughter with the 5D.



Call it what you want but making 30,000 dollars from 4 hours work dosn't qualify as Pro because I didn't use Medium Format. That image I can't show due to contract but was shot with a 5D.

Don't worry Nikon makes great camera's as well as Canon. They both make some great glass. Go out, take some shots and be happy we have so many options.

By the way I do shoot with medium format as well but it is to limited for many jobs.

to make a crop factor camera again, like the D2x: They need to do both things in one: high rez in 1,2 crop of FF, and high speed (8 or 10MP in crop mode). If they answer the 1d Mk3 with a similar camera, they will have nothing against the 1ds Mark III. I cannot imagine them to come out with 2 pro cameras at the same time.

Basically they are half a year late, because many Nikon people will give in to the seduction that is called MkIII and will ship soon.

If they will stick to Dx they will have a very hard time to increase the resolution anyway, because 12MP is already a bit too much for small sensors, I cannot imagine them going to 16Mp in a Dx sensor - the ISO performance would be horrible above ISO 400....

At least - one could say - they are not trapped into the small format like Oly who cannot go bigger.
