A7CR: Unable to read the memory card. Reinsert the memory card.

I have a strange problem: One of my memory cards (ADATA microSD 256 GB, UHS-II, V90) does not work anymore on any of my two A7CR. The error message is "Unable to read the memory card. Reinsert the memory card.". Other cards still work. Firmware of the camera is 2.00.

I only made a backup with my laptop. Putting it back into the camera, I got the error message. Putting it into the second A7CR camera, the same. Using another UHS-II microsd to sd card adapter or using a UHS-I adapter, both did not work, too.

It however works on my laptop (both built-in micro sd slot and with microsd to sd adapter + card reader) and it also works on an A7Rii.

Testing the card with a test program which writes it full with data gave no problem.

Reformatting (fully) did not work either.

Obviously something happened with the memory card, which does not matter with the older camera or laptop. Maybe a timing problem.

Had anybody a similar experience? What could be the reason?

Can you still format in camera despite the error message?

No, it is not possible to access anything in the user unterface. Formatting the card low level with downloaded software SD Formatter from SD Association did also not solve the problem.

Do you have other UHS-II cards or regular single-row pin cards? There might be an issue with the other row in the card reader of the camera.

This works on the A7CR (2 identical cameras):

- other UHS-II cards with different UHS-II adapter.

- other UHS-II cards with single row adapter

- UHS-I SD cards

This works also on PC:

- ADATA without Adapter

- ADATA with UHS-II Adapter and card reader

- ADATA with single row Adapter and card reader

This works not:

- ADATA on A7CR with UHS-II adapter

- ADATA on A7CR with single row adapter

You might try downloading the SD foundation formatting app and performing a full format.

A thorough approach:
  • run chkdsk :Drive letter /f /r from the command line on your laptop, then
  • do a complete format using the SD foundation formatter, then
  • insert the disk into your camera and format it there

I already tried his, see my second post.

Card is bad. Throw it in the bad pile and move on.

Or if Adata has a warranty, use that.
Before throwing it away. Try leaving it in the freezer.

The card is more than 2 years old and there is no extended warranty offered by them (EU),

Strange, they do not have any V90 or V60 microsd anymore.

This is the reason I stopped using a microSD card on my A7CR. It adds a layer of electronic read/write, versus using an SD card. I once ran into a problem, where the camera was "perpetually" writing, that I had to shut it down.

My best advice - go SD card, full blown. No more using microSD. A V60 128gb anyway costs less than $100 these days.

What do you mean with "layer"? I don't think that it adds a software layer of read/write but eventually a hardware layer of electronics. The camera will not see a difference between sd and microsd. The adapter is only mechanical. In the past, I tought that the cards are virtually identical, but this is also not the case: the microsd eventually uses more hardware layers or it becomes more hot as the components in it are packed more tense.

I will replace the adata microsd by an Nextorage V90 sd which uses pSLC cells.

I wonder also, why adata does not sell any V60 and V90 microsd anymore, but still V90 sd.

Good advice! The A7CR just has one card slot so just keep it simple and use the most reliable SD card that you can get.

Ah, Adata! I stopped using them from my Canon 7D compact flash card days when I got two rounds of card corrupted episodes.

I was referring to hardware layer. Electronic contact points (1) from adapter to mSD card and (2) from camera to adapter. Two layers. Keep things simple and cut your agony short.

OK.

My opinion is that the contacts should not be a problem if it is a good quality adapter but it is very likely that inside the microsd there are more layers (multilayer pcb)/components placed more tense than sd (if they are multi layered at all).
