70-200 F4 IS sharpness issues

At 7 ft the problem is negligible. In my tests, it is bad for anything less than 5 ft. I am not sure how gradual the change is though. Once again it has to be > 180 mm focal length. It is very good at 150 mm

It has to be longer than 180 mm and less than 5 feet. Extreme case: 200 mm and 4 ft.

...but shot at 1/20 to 1/40 with IS!!!

Just wait until you see it... :-) No trial-and-error, just one (1) shot and AF on 45-point "PJ" mode (some extra settings on 1D's Custom/Personal functions).

Stay tuned...

I just received by 70-200 F4IS 2 days ago and haven't tested it out extensively. What I did shoot, I was impressed with. With all the great things everyone said about this lens, I wasn't concerned. After reading this thread, I jumped up and tested from 70-200mm, wide and stopped down and did not come up with any close up shooting softness at all.

Here's the one with 135mm f4.0 and MFD

I think that it is soft (or there is lack of contrast) but one has
to compare the shots at 135 and 200 mm

Here are mine (text):

I think that your lens is not much worse at 200 mm than at 135.

Thank you Ed. I did not have to look at all. This problem came to me in my normal shooting :-)

What do you think yourself, Ed? I did not see how your lens performs at 135 mm or at 200 mm and 7 ft so it is difficult for me to judge (you can see it better on your computer). I think that there is some loss of quality (especially at 4 ft) but I am not sure. If you say that your lens has a similar sharpness (or contrast) at 200 mm and 135 (both at MFD), I would be willing to get another one (I am serious)

When measuring distance to subject, does one measure distance from subject to lens front OR to sensor surface? There could be a significant difference...especially with this lens which is a few inches long!!

I'm testing tomorrow. I'll mount a newpaper page to a wall; turn IS off and mount to tripod, then use remote switch. Can't wait to see what I get.

I tested today, but forgot to turn my IS off...OH ICK!

I also want to test my 'drainpipe' 80-200 f2.8 against the 70-200 f4! Can't wait to compare the 200mm on each of these lenses against each other. How the test comes out determines whether or not I sell the 80-200!!

Wish me luck,

Beth

In these shots it seems the image is a lot worse on the top than on the bottom at both focal lengths. Are you sure the focal plane is not tilted in relation to your subject?

do you mean it's already worse at 135mm itself?
I think that your lens is not much worse at 200 mm than at 135.
