Hotshoe triggering in ES mode on R5?

Hi

I am using a pocketwizard in the hot shoe of my R5 (mk 1) to remote trigger another camera. However, I can only get it to work in mechanical shutter mode. Is there any way to trigger the hotshoe in ES mode? I am not looking for any flash functionality, just synchronised triggering of two cameras.

thanks

Fredrik

R5 doesn't support flash in ES mode. The sensor readout speed isn't fast enough for flash sync to work. There is no independent hotshoe based triggering system built into these cameras, so if you want to trigger multiple units, you should look at a system that does that specifically

The only cameras in canon lineup supporting flash sync are R5 II, R3 and R1 - basically those with fast enough sensor readout speeds

The camera doesn't support flash in ES mode (too slow readout for HSS or for the sort of X-synch speeds people expect these days) so the hotshoe doesn't even send a signal to trigger a flash in that mode. EFCS mode should work though, which is quieter than two-curtain mode, though not silent.

I am not using it for flash. The pocketwizard in the hotshoe is connected to another powetwizard that triggers a second camera. So I do not need any flash sync functionality, I just want it to trigger the pocketwizard signal. But I would not be surprised if it is not possible (due to the reason you mention).

Devices using the hotshoe for shutter trigger sync piggyback on the fact that the flash sync is accurate enough to work for the trigger use case. So yes, as you said, it won't work for the same reason, as the hotshoe doesn't get any signal at all. If it cannot sync a super fast flash to the shutter, it will be hard to sync another shutter to it.

PW themselves suggest using a cable trigger for such cases. Is it possible to hook up PW to both cameras cable release ports and then trigger externally?

Ok, seems like a difficult use case to solve then. I am using a main camera to shoot football, and then want it synchronised to a remote camera behind the goal, so difficult to use cable for both.

The reson for using ES and not mechanical of first curtain electronic is getting 20fps as opposed to 12fps.

I did not mean connecting both cameras wired together. I meant connecting a remote trigger system to the cameras individually, firing the local camera using that, and letting the local wireless unit trigger the remote cameras reciever to trigger it. This would work because the trigger is managed by the triggering system instead of one of the cameras. It would take away the convenience of triggering the local camera directly though

I don't know what PW can do, but there are other remote triggering systems that can do what I described above

This setup with the trigger cable connected to the main handheld camera is typical in the sports world. Many photographers using Sony do this exact same setup connecting a trigger cable to the handheld just as you would with the remote camera.

Actually, using this method will trigger the remote camera slightly faster since the transmitter is not waiting for a sync pulse. It will trigger as you fully depress the shutter release.
