R5 Mark II Operating Noise

I own and have used several R5 Mark I bodies for some time. Yesterday, I acquired an R5 Mark II and am puzzled by a low volume sound coming from it, while it is turned on, that sounds like air flow from a fan. I have not heard this sound at all from the R5.

For each camera body, I've used the RF 70-200 f/4L lens with the image stabilizer switched on (and off). The sound from the R5 Mark II occurs as soon as it is turned on and it doesn't matter if it is at idle or actively focusing. (Neither camera has a battery grip installed).

Also, when I turn off the R5, I can hear the sensor cleaning mechanism operating and the shutter closing before it is fully off. With the R5 Mark II, there is no sensor cleaning noise (I do have it set to operate at shutdown), only the faint "fan noise" and then the shutter closing.

I'm not aware from anything I've read that the R5 Mark II has a built-in cooling fan.

Have any of you experienced a similar behavior from your R5 Mark II bodies?

I have it on my R5 II as well. It is quite evident when you hold your ear close to the vents near the bottom.

There is sensor cleaning noise too. But it is very faint on R5 II.

No fans internally.

I noticed the "venting" (?) noise as soon as I turned the camera on the very first day I received it.

Thanks for confirming what I heard. It puts my mind at ease knowing that.

Again, thanks for your reply.

I have an R5II; I'm pretty sure the faint noise is just the IBIS being active. There is also some faint additional noise when you're actually shooting photos (even with just ES mode).

Nothing to worry about. As mentioned it's just the IBIS sound (easier to hear because of the venting). Also don't be concerned about the additional whir when you are activating Pre-capture, it's just the camera recording.

Happy shooting!

The noise is there even with IBIS turned off... but yea I think it must be the IBIS unit. Can't guess what else would make a continuous sound like that.

The sensor is still held in place electromagnetically when the camera is switched on, even with IBIS switched off. The Kolari teardown confirms that there are no internal fans.

+1 Thanks for expanding on this for the OP. I get lazy sometimes! :-)

I also switched from an R5 to an R5 II a year ago. Immediately after the switch, I noticed that the slightly louder operating noise was also unpleasant. You hear it more clearly when setting up the camera at the beginning, but it cannot be heard outside in the field.

The R5II does not have a built-in fan.

Yes, I have the noise too. On the other hand I feel the camera is much better balanced for one handed use than the original r5.

I upgraded from the R5 to the R5 ii and noticed the increase in operating noise straight away. For me the R5 was a particularly quiet running camera.

I used external mics when recording video and I haven't noticed any noise from the R5 ii on the soundtrack.

All that good work that Canon did to help get the heat out had the additional side effect of assisting the noise get out easier, too. FWIW: If you put your ear up against the R5 Mark I, you will also hear the noise, just less of it.

Here is a thread that I started a year or so ago on the issue:
