Our purple Azalea is always first, followed by the red, then pink (not yet), then we get the Rhodies.

So, you liked them?

Yeah, I will be trying that. SDOF is what I have been missing, so that is what I am still learning with my first FF sensor, first fixed 35mm. All MF by the way.

At these distances, I would think full depth of flower could be achieved at a lower f# than f11, yes?

Gotta shoot ebay pics, I will definitely try various f stops later to see for myself.

I like learning how to plan SDOF backgrounds while shooting, and the differences between rx100m3 and RX1r when cropping.

Beautiful flowers, color and bokeh. I actually like the extremely shallow focus. It plays with the out-of-focus petals and leaves in a beautiful, painterly way.

They're solid; the dew drops make them more than the usual "just a flower" pic.

No; the closer the distance to your subject, the shallower the depth of focus. The f/4 that gives you a few inches of depth when taking a picture of a person is good for a few millimeters when shooting something a foot away. Once you're at macro distance, you need broad, sweeping changes in f-stop just to get an extra mm fore and aft of what you're looking at. The goal is to set the aperture right on that fine line where the flower is most in focus and the background is most out of focus, most flower detail with most background blur.

Nice play with DoF and very nice images. Lovely colors too.

Thanks for sharing.

Al.

Now these are some of your best shots, EVER

I can't even find one thing to criticize!

I just got done planting $50 worth of Asiatic Lily Bulbs. Love, em.

You are having some fun with that new large sensor, and the SOF you can achieve. Great lavender colors from that camera. Overall some very appealing images, and I couldn't come close to getting something like that.

I am with SoCalWill -- go try it with F5 or above see if you can get an entire flower in focus next time. Looks like you have the MF well in control.

Yeah, I wasn't clear, I didn't mean macro, I meant normal close, back 3 or 4 feet, f11 seemed more than needed.

I will mess with both tomorrow, weather permitting. The azaleas are near my hose, so I can make rain if needed.

The red one, crop, gives me the idea of planning seeing shadows in focus of things that you cannot see

btw, I am not that happy with RX1r macro, don't have a senseof distance yet. Finally I manually minimized focus length, then, while magnified with peaking, move the camera in/out a speck to pick my raindrop or stem, then I shoot a few continuous as I am shaky, one is bound to be more precise than another for what I want.

.......................................

Anyone who has been here when my rx100's were new has seen too many pics of our plants, full depth of flowers in focus. I'm a sucker for blue/purple.

If you hover over forums on the top bar, then look bottom right, you see 'my threads'. I'm taking advantage to post links to my prior rx100 flower posts. I will be repeating lots of these with the RX1r.

Thanks, glad you like them, I'm having fun.

Thanks Al, how about digging out one of your Sony compacts and posting something, miss your photos. Show us what you are shooting with currently too, many are interested, no matter what camera, to know what other forum members are doing.

Thanks Bill, I value your opinion as you know.

Thanks Jeff,

I am, SDOF is what I have been missing, especially since sending my R1 to ric in Australia.

I did a color shootout, compared my old S85, R1, rx100's, and later compared my Oly Stylus 1. They were all terrific OOC Jpegs colors, very consistent, except I did find, the blue/purple range, the rx100's were a bit off, pleasantly, but not as true as the others. I will be adding the RX1r Jpeg OOC colors to that comparison if any of our blue/purple hydrangeas survived the deer this winter.

OK, will do
Looks like you have the MF well in control.
Sony's MF system is TERRIFIC, love it. Used it today with rx100m3 ebay pics, so easy.

i sometime start with f 5.6 to test in first place then i consider if it needs either dof (push to f11) or bokeh (push to f2). flowers often are photogenic in general.

you've made these red leafs pop out in background which i like how you've looked for your angle to discover in the composition. i like these two photos of leafs are unique. well done.

I'm glad you like them, here's another

It was quite breezy, I waited between shots till things calmed down and I used Manual Focus, let tree parts move into focus, take the shot, see what you got later.

here is a crop of a crop, still showing detail of edges of leaves.

84236087b10d467e9ba3ab379f69b522.jpg

from this one which is a pretty strong crop itself.

another thread made me think to try alternate watercolors

from

you can make an alternate watercolor version later of any shot in-camera with RX1.

In play mode, select the image you want an alternate of. Press Menu, go to Play, page 2, press Picture Effect, 2 choices: Watercolor or Illustration. Pick one, press rear center button, camera makes the alternate shot, press Menu button, it asks if you want to save it.

These features are Jpeg Only though.

the changes are much more subtle starting with RX1 SDOF than same thing with rx100's shots with more DOF

These shots are gorgeous! I agree with earlier sentiment that the focused details made me want to see more of the flower. The sharpness of those dew drops are outstanding, too. I love how you can see every undulation of the fabric of the petals in them. Great job!

thanks for the compliments, purple lovers unite. I shot some various f stops this am, need to check them out.

Down in Toms River, NJ, the wind was blowing these huge tulips all over the place, some were protected by a fence. look at the Pansys to get a sense of size
