How many lenses do you own

I rebuilt my lens collection when I converted from manual focus to automatic focus, in 1997. It has taken seven years to build this kit, but I think it's almost perfect, at least for film cameras or FF digital cameras.

17-35 L

24-70 L (Brand new and replaces pre-EX 28-70 f/2.8 Sigma, which gives ERR99 on my 10D. I really wish that this was a 28-80)
70-200 f/2.8 Sigma EX
100-400 L
28-200 Canon
50 f/1.4
100 USM Macro
180 f/3.5 Sigma EX Macro
1.4x TC, 2X TC (the latter is NOT recommended)

The 28-200 is on my ElanII film camera almost all of the time, but will probably be replaced by something like the 18-125 Sigma for the 10D. That camera/lens combination, with or without a 380EX flash, are my absolutely lightest weight outfit. It is perfect for snapshots of family gatherings.

Unless I'm shooting macro, I always carry the 17-35, 24-70 and 70-200 with a 10D and an EOS-3. Depending what I'm doing, I may also carry the 50, the 100 or the 100-400.

I'm also interested in the 18-50 f/2.8 Sigma EX, 300-800 Sigma EX and a 10-20 Sigma EX DC or Canon L (assuming they ever get made).
How many do you carry with you?

Since getting my 10D I was looking in my old camera bag. My old
heavy bag had a wide assortment of lenses (I got lucky buying my
camera used) I had all kinds of lenses, but when looking back I
pretty much only used my 28-200 and 50.

Now I am rebuilding my lenses from scratch. So far I have the
17-40L and 50 1.8. I am finding that I miss my telephoto, but it
is a tough choice. I think I will probably go with the 70-200L f4.
It is a nice compromise with size and speed. A 2.8 would be nice
but I just doubt I would carry it enough.

So what's in your wallet, errr bag?

The cheap 35-80mm and 80-200 from my film days. Got the 18-55 kit lens along with my 300D, added 50 1.8 for portrait on a budget and the 100-400 L IS to catch these birdies in Florida... :)

Pretty much never uses the 35-80 anymore (it's decorating my bedroom...). I have a small shoulder bag that fits the 300D and the other lenses (apart from the 100-400) perfectly that I drag along with me everywhere I go. I put the all thing in a backpack with the 100-400 whenever I feel the need.

Next is the 85 1.8 (missed that type of lens numerous times recently). Might get a 70-200 4L but I love my 80-200 even if it's certainly not as good as I had the occasion to compare. In fact I'd love the 24-70L for my graduation... ;)

Ten all together---redundancies in wide, but I usually carry 3 for commercial--the 15-30, 24-70L and a fast wide (20 f/1.8--just in case). Sometimes I feel the need to add the 50 1/.8 also--another just in case.

For play---the 15FE, 20, 35, Tamron 90mm macro, the 70-200 f/4L--and I also have the 28-135IS and Sigma 28-300--these last 2 are shared with my husband and friends when they use my other bodies. I generally carry either the 15-30 and 24-70 or the 3 wide primes (15, 20, 35) and the 70-200 for my personal shooting--often don't include the tele but may add the 50 or 90. I try to keep it light and 'focused' LOL.

I don't see a close relationship between the title of the post and
the contents.
No? Sorry then. I am rebuilding my set of lenses, and was curious about what other people have. I was also interested to see how many lenses people carry vs own. It always seemed a waste for me to have lenses I didnt use, but since I did not really buy them I didn't care. Now that I am buying each one I want to make sure they are ones I will use.
If what you used in the past was a 28-200 and a 50, why don't you
start by rebuilding that pair? The Sigma 18-125 is the only lens
that corresponds to your old 28-200 (after taking the crop factor
into account) and a 35 prime comes close to the 50 you had before.
Now if you try them and don't like the quality (especially the
18-125 which some people really use and like and some people
dislike right from seeing their first photo come out with some
vignetting) then you have a problem matching your old set because
there is no alternative that covers this range. I have no idea why
Canon ignored such a market potential.
I am working on it. Although my shooting style has changed since back then as well. My old camera went around the world with me. With a 16month old girl, my globetrotting is halted for awhile. Now I shoot a lot more indoors. I have not found a 28-200 zoom these days I am happy with, so I am trying to get to about 3 lenses to cover most of what I do. The 17-40L on the wide end. The 50 for indoors, and some sort of 70-200ish zoom for the longer range. Just hard sifting through which long zoom I will actually use.

danh

Sigma 15mm fisheye for really wide and fast
Canon 17-40L for wide zoom (indoor parties)
Canon 50mm 1.8 for fast and sharp
Canon 28-135 IS for general use
Canon 75-300 IS for shooting model airplanes, mostly
Kenko extension tube for macro (probably doesn't count as a lens!)

Lenses I own...

EOS
17-40/4
28-105/3.5-4.5
28/2.8
50/1.8
100/2.8 USM Macro
300/4 L
1.4x II

Canon FDn
20-35/3.5 L
28-85/4
80-200/4
20/2.8
24/2.8
35/2.8
50/1.4
100/2
300/4 L
1.4x

The 10D and 17-40 are always with me...always. Did I say always?

I seldom ever carry more than 2 lenses per system...even if all primes...and I might be more inclined to carry another body:
10D, EOS 3,
T90, A-1, AE-1P, F1N w/AE finder
several TLR's,
several MF folder's,
just one Bender 4x5...

Even if I "carry" minimal gear...I might have 2 or 3 camera bags in the Jeep. Yes, I've shot 120 Plus-X, 35mm Tri-X, Provia, and 10D digital...all in the same weekend.

I use the LowePro Orion AW which is a belt pack with an optional daypack. I have used it for travel where I was on foot or bus/train for a whole day and I had room for my camera gear, plus space for food/clothes/water.

The pack will hold a body with lens (my 28-135 / 300D combo fits) plus four other longer lens. I currently carry above combo plus Sigma 12-24, Canon 24-70 2.8L, 50 1.8 and 24-85.

What I like about this beltpack is that it is can be supported not only by the waist belt but also by either the shoulder straps of the daypack or with an included shoulder strap when I hike with the fanny pack only. The weight is supported and I can move without bounce.

Andy
I typically carry all the lenses. How do you leave one behind when
you are not sure of the shooting situation?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a really good backback
which is not the size of a foot locker to hold these lenses and a
1dMKII body?
