Has anyone tried the Canon RF 800?

Lastly, I find the 500 + 2X noticeably sharper than the 100-500 w/ 2X.
At more than $6000 more expensive, more than twice the weight, and a prime lens to boot, it would be rather disappointing if it weren't.
Hopefully you figured out that I was responding to the OP's comment about selling his 500 to pay for the 100-500. He already has the prime and I'm suggesting that he keep it.

It would be a different story if he didn't already have the prime, or even if he had the original 500 f/4L...
You made great points about the 500 f4. The lens is $12,000 CAD new. Add taxes to that. I paid around $8,000 before taxes about 8 years ago. My only reason for selling it is why keep a lens I seldom ever use. I will use the RF 100-500 every day.

I just got one a few days ago to use on my R7. The reviews are pretty much spot on - it is pretty good in the center, ok in the mid, and somewhat soft in the corners. But, for the price it does quite well. The focus area is limited and can make it hard to track moving objects. Stationary ones are no problem except eye tracking doesn't work when the eyes are outside the allowed AF area (center 50%?). I tried it in lower light (evening and night) and only had slight trouble getting it to focus as the light faded. At night on a sturdy tripod I had no problem with focus as long as there was enough light to see what I was pointing at. Occasionally the lens would hunt in lower light/lower contrast situations but not very often.

Carrying this lens on the R7 is no problem, lighter than my 100-400M2 and Tarmon 70-200 f2.8. Using a tripod or monopod does help keeping it steady. Using a monopod I got a decent percentage of sharp shots at 1/2000s - 1/1250s and then the percentage dropped to only a handful at 1/60s and just a couple at 1/30s. Handheld 1/2000s to 1/500s produce a decent percentage of sharp shots. Practice with a really long lens should increase this percentage and maybe get more keepers at 1/250 - 1/125.

This was shot handheld at 1/2000s from my front door to a tree in the middle of our neighbor's yard. PP boosted EV, contrast, and colors, DeepPrime NR due to ISO 6400, moderate sharpening, and 20% cropped out.

I think I remember reading that the focus area is significantly larger on the R6II. I am vaguely considering getting the RF 800 for my R6II. On my R7, the RF 100-400 with 1.4 extender is long enough for me (but who knows? if I do get the 800 and use it on my R7, maybe I'll be hooked).

ok, sorry, a good morning and I'll remember not to...

ISO 6400 is fine with the R5 and RF800 f11 lens. For me I'm not that worried at ISO 12,800 using Deep Prime. Bif's are tricky with the limited focusing area but do-able with a high enough shutter speed and good light.

The great thing about the R6 MK2 is it allows me to handhold non-IS lenses like the 400 5.6L It also allows AF with either a 1.4x or 2x.

The 1.4x does fine. The results are sharp and eye-AF works. The 2X works also but may need manual focus help sometimes to get focusing started. The results are not as sharp probably because the camera shakes when handholding. Bokeh is nice so f/11 is OK.

After the above test, it's not going to beat a lens made for 800mm with IS. The RF 800 f/11.

xx

I have seen the reviews on The-Digital-Picture and on Youtube. Has anyone tried the Canon RF 800? How did you find it? I am very interested in getting this lens for the reach on the R6 MK2. Yes, I have the 500 f4 II + 1.4x but would rather carry the RF 800 due to its more compact factor.
I haven't tried it personally, but it's a popular lens amongst bird photographers round here and they all speak highly of it.

I do miss the reach while using a FF mirrorless. It's the price of the RF 800 f/11 that is surprising tio me, $1,200 in Canada.

A lot of experience above with the 800/11. Personally I suspect I would have difficulty finding a subject at 800mm on FF or 1280mm equivalent FL on an R7. So does anyone have comparisons with the 600mm f11?

I like mine quite well too...

An RF 800 f/5.6 and an R3. Great comparison to the 800 f/11 and lesser R body. :-O

Well, the OP left that possibility open with the abbreviated lens name.

It's a good idea to ad a few more characters to narrow the lenses down. "RF800/11" would probably be specific for quite a long time, as any other RF-mount prime lens that is 800/11 in the future will have a "mark II" in the name.

I never heard of the f/11 version and never knew there was such a thing. That would be something I would never consider but to each his own.

(snip)

Completely unaware of it? Must be nice. ;-)

A $1k lens vs. a $17k one.

IMHO, the most significant drawback to the f/11 is its 6m minimum focus distance. (Versus the 2.6m distance for the f/5.6.) There are several other limitations, but that one has the strongest effect on its usability.

Right. So when the OP talked about the ‘more compact form factor’ of the 800 you thought they were talking about the 800 F5.6. Perhaps I could interest you in a bridge in Brooklyn at a very reasonable price? You could probably photograph it with the R3 and 800 F5.6 that you made sure we all know you own.
That would be something I would never consider but to each his own.

LOL - have you taken any pictures with your RF 400mm with built in 2X extender? ;-)

Maybe a shot of the newly purchased RF 600mm with its 2X extender?
