I tend to agree with Thom Hogan’s assessment on failure or success.Agree with that.Let's let it be a dud before declaring it a dud. They have fooled us before.
Should it be a dud, will Nikon's defenders claim otherwise?

I'll take a crack at it. In all fairness, Nikon never said they'd be making announcements. Releases, developments or otherwise. I'm disappointed too, but once again it was 100% internet speculation, weak rumors, and pseudo insiders that said something might be coming as early as this CES show. Nikon didn't. Can't be mad at Nikon, per se, because they never said anything was coming this week. That said, we're all eagerly awaiting 3rd gen announcements since they are overdue and we're all curious what trickles down from the Z9.Agree with that.Let's let it be a dud before declaring it a dud. I like Thom but I think he is laughably myopic on this. Nikon is going to get a big, central table to show off camera gear? At a consumer electronics show? The average consumer has left cameras behind. They believe their phone is good enough. His conclusions are outright wrong. Nikon may announce 2 lenses. They might announce some camera upgrades. That would only be coincidence. This show is not the finish line and show lie center for camera gear. The press release says so. It’s about this game, and robot vision and a other tech. Not cameras.I tend to agree with Thom Hogan’s assessment on failure or success.Agree with that.Let's let it be a dud before declaring it a dud. They have fooled us before.

I've already done the first gen and second gen upgrade and will not be doing a 3rd gen upgrade while waiting for the lenses I need.I'll take a crack at it. I’ve got a Z6 and Z9. I’m interested in getting a Z6III to better match the video abilities of the Z9. 10 bit internal at a minimum. And some of the Z9 AF goodness tricked down. I have the lenses I “need” at the momentI've already done the first gen and second gen upgrade and will not be doing a 3rd gen upgrade while waiting for the lenses I need.I'll take a crack at it. Okay, so what is Nikon's Consumer Electronic (non-camera/lens) technology; which would justify Nikon getting "a big, central table to show off"?I like Thom but I think he is laughably myopic on this. I've been saying since May/June that there is no chance Nikon will put out a new body till mid 2023, maybe later in the year. No chance it will be anything like a Z9 or cheaper Z9 ish body that everyone has been boasting about. They just aren't going to do anything to slow the gravy train down that is the Z9 sales. How about this announcement? CES is going to be a big dud for Nikon cameras once again. Nothing noteworthy since the Z9 over a year ago? Wow. I’m amazed they managed to do so little. They released some great lenses in the past year and absolutely nothing other than the Z9 to use them with. The joke is on me for thinking they actually had a viable alternative to the Z9 at the ready. Holy smokes.Starting with the Panasonic Lumix S5 II: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dc-s5-ii-dc-s5-iix-initial-review
You should be able to see Panasonic ads on the margins of DPReview now. And I promptly received a pre-order e-mail from B&H.
Expect many other announcements throughout the day, January 4.

This is true for me, at least. I have 200-500, and was eagerly looking for 200-600, basically for faster AF for BIF. Zoom was essential to me as i use this lens for wildlife, both for birds and large animals. If Nikon introduced the 200-600 a years ago, demand would have been much higher. Now that the 400mm/f4.5 S is readily available and a close enough substitute, I think plenty of the 200-600 demand has already been siphoned off by the 400/4.5 (+ 1.4x TC). Any Nikon 200-600 will likely be around $1000 cheaper than the 400/4.5, which has not yet been discounted in the US yet.
Yes, we are going home, kids! We may try again another day. Just suck it up.“Not only are we not there yet, kids. But Dad has lost the map, I have no phone reception, my GPS is broke, and our compass is spinning like we’re in the Bermuda Triangle. It ain’t looking good.”
Quote: " CES is a Failure if……all we get is a couple of new Nikkor Z lenses"CES is about to start and the only new products Nikon is announcing are the Z 85mm f/1.2 S and the Z 26mm f/2.8 pancake.
No Z camera this time?
One can hope..Maybe at CP+ (February 23 - 26, 2023)?
So much for his strong hint under the Xmas tree - Thom was far out in the woods predicting a Z8Quote: " CES is a Failure if……all we get is a couple of new Nikkor Z lenses"CES is about to start and the only new products Nikon is announcing are the Z 85mm f/1.2 S and the Z 26mm f/2.8 pancake.

Actually, it's not even that, we only got development announcements..

Or they could announce a new camera regardless of any consumer electronics show or photography show anywhere in the world, like they've done in the past.Quote: " CES is a Failure if……all we get is a couple of new Nikkor Z lenses"CES is about to start and the only new products Nikon is announcing are the Z 85mm f/1.2 S and the Z 26mm f/2.8 pancake.

Well, easy isn't it, we invest lots of $ in our hobby, then somebody moves the goalposts and tells us mirrorless is the next best thing, it works much better etc etc, press agrees, influencers influence etc, so you sell up your old stuff and buy into it. Then you find that a) it's not working either like you were told or as well as the competition can seemingly do and b) the lenses you were told coming are still not here 3 years later or whatever..Seriously? Why be so obsessed? When the gear comes, it comes. Seems like a waste of time to me.
it will be, eventually. Nothing wrong with the good ol DSLR.Well, easy isn't it, we invest lots of $ in our hobby, then somebody moves the goalposts and tells us mirrorless is the next best thing,Seriously? Why be so obsessed? When the gear comes, it comes. Seems like a waste of time to me.
Well that’s on you. Maybe you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet. People tend to get mixed up in the ‘new is better’ hype and have a fear of being left behind. I tested the Z’s out and decided they’re not for me yet and kept my D850’s. No one told you to sell everything, Nikon made it possible to use all G lenses with full functionality.it works much better etc etc, press agrees, influencers influence etc, so you sell up your old stuff and buy into it. Then you find that a) it's not working either like you were told or as well as the competition can seemingly do and b) the lenses you were told coming are still not here 3 years later or whatever..
Fortunately, there’s no “everyone” or “no one” in marketing. There’s innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority and the laggers. This is how it is with all electronics. just look at the transition from petrol to electric cars, it’s a gradual process. There will always be individuals for whom it will go too slow, too fast, too expensive, whatever. The problem is that if everybody waited until everything was available for them lenswise (ignoring the FTZ, obviously..) before moving into the system, Nikon would be bankrupt by now as DSLR sales would have stopped (Osborne effect..) and everybody would be waiting for the complete set of lenses to be available. (still waiting..).
how do you know? Let’s not forget that the population on this forum are hardly a representative for all photographers. The gear obsessed tend to be over represented here ;-) I see lots of pro’s still kicking their DSLR’s.Tricky balancing act for a "smaller" company like Nikon huh! ;-)
I think Nikon have managed it pretty well, but it's impossible to be or do everything for everybody. If the Z9 had not yet come out I think many more would have left already, the latest long lenses and the Z9 have convinced enough people that Nikon can (of course..) do it right eventually..
