Are we there, yet?

It would be really sad if these two lenses were the only new things Nikon is going to announce during CES.

Unless they've decided to make a BIG announcement at CP+ next month...

When I go on holiday, my children used to ask every ten minutes: "Are we there yet?" Today I feel like that, checking here and on Nikon rumors every hour or so for the slightest scent of a rumour of ... I do not really know what. Maybe a new body, maybe the long expected 200-600. Another 1.2 prime, I do not know. Looks like we will have to wait till the show itself before we'll know anything.
If we don't get the 200-600 soon, I'm getting off the train.

Yeah, we missed the exit due to the poor GPS directions. We are going to swing back around and try this again. Make a U-turn at the next available light.

I have a feeling, when they do make the 200-600, they will only make like 3 a month.

LOL..

I expect a huge demand for them, so they'll make a lot, but they won't be on shelves for a while either. I'm still hoping for one, three years in to the road map updates.

If there's not one soon, I'll probably get the Sony and adapt it.

If Nikon introduced the 200-600 a years ago, demand would have been much higher. Now that the 400mm/f4.5 S is readily available and a close enough substitute, I think plenty of the 200-600 demand has already been siphoned off by the 400/4.5 (+ 1.4x TC). Any Nikon 200-600 will likely be around $1000 cheaper than the 400/4.5, which has not yet been discounted in the US yet.

If the Nikon 200-600mm is "only" $1000 less than the 400mm/f4.5 S then there are going to be some disappointed/annoyed people.. The 200-500mm was $1250 when I got it (seasonal reduction) and the Sony 200-600mm is currently $1600 here..

The Sony 200-600 is still $2000 in the US, currently $1998 at B&H: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1532686-REG/sony_fe_200_600mm_f_5_6_6_3_g.html

I have seen $100 discounts but nothing like $1600 new in the US.

I expect Nikon's 200-600 will also start from around $2000 or so. The 400/4.5 is $3250. The difference will be somewhere around $1000, roughly speaking.

Nikon was behind the curve and suffered from their sloth like embrace of mirrorless sales potential.
Did you ever hear of the Nikon 1 series of cameras that made their debut in 2011? Did you ever own a Nikon 1 camera? While they were expensively priced and sold poorly outside of Japan, in Japan they were popular and sold well. I bought my first Nikon 1, a Nikon 1 V1, during the fire sale of late 2012 and have been a big fan since then. Nikon has since discontinued the 1 line, but I still find the V3 with the superb 30-110mm zoom mounted very handy at sporting events and concerts, as I wouldn't be let in with any larger camera/lens. And it makes great photos!

I don't see how anyone can say Nikon was "behind the curve" regarding mirrorless cameras when the 1 system is taken in to consideration. At the time of its debut there was nothing like it from Canon or Sony.

In Switzerland, the Sony is from 1635.- Sfr which is actually $1730, but there is a $100 cashback to reduce it to $1630ish. The existing Nikon 200-500 is 1151.- ($1220) currently. I recently saw the Sony and was impressed with its size/weight and it's internal focussing, I hope the Nikon is at least the equal when it finally appears.

Hi,

Well, I heard of the One Series. I never gave them much thought. Yep. Ahead of the curve.

Just like Nikon was with the E-series DSLR is how I thought about the 1-series whenever I did think about it.

I was right into the E-series and bought into that marketing malarkey they had. Full Frame. Reduction Optical System. The way of the future. They missed the mark pretty wide there. And then sold film bodies to Kodak who did a much better job, thankfully.

Starting with the Panasonic Lumix S5 II: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dc-s5-ii-dc-s5-iix-initial-review

You should be able to see Panasonic ads on the margins of DPReview now. And I promptly received a pre-order e-mail from B&H.

Expect many other announcements throughout the day, January 4.

How about this announcement? CES is going to be a big dud for Nikon cameras once again. Nothing noteworthy since the Z9 over a year ago? Wow. I’m amazed they managed to do so little. They released some great lenses in the past year and absolutely nothing other than the Z9 to use them with. The joke is on me for thinking they actually had a viable alternative to the Z9 at the ready. Holy smokes.

Let's let it be a dud before declaring it a dud. They have fooled us before.

If Nikon announces new products at CES, then they will publish a product specific Press Release. The just recent Press Release was in essence an announcement that they are at CES. There are already strong indications that the 85mm f/1.2 S and the 26mm f/2.8 Pancake lenses are imminent, yet there hasn't been a Press Release.

Of course Nikon could wait for CP+ ??

I'm not so sure about that. Don't get me wrong, I want the 400 prime for a lot of reasons, but I have one body (or will shortly, at any rate). For the shooting I do, I prioritize zooms because wildlife can get closer and closer and make it hard for me to have a long prime.

I'd be happy with a 400mm plus a 1.4x internal tc, I think, but swapping TCs externally is a no go for me (for most things).

I do expect to eventually take two lenses and swap between them for wildlife outings, the 200-600 (if it's good enough, or the sony if not) plus 1.4x tc (again, if possible, if not, I'll look at more options) and either the 100-400 or 400 prime, depending on which route I want to go (probably the prime).

The 200-600 is also going to be the 'budget' wildlife lens, just as the 200-500 was in the f mount lineup (imo).

Agree with that.

Should it be a dud, will Nikon's defenders claim otherwise?

It depends on what you expect/hope for. Personally, I'm only expecting a few lenses (1.2s, 200-600, maybe expanding on the plan for DX or talking about working with sigma) here.

If nikon doesn't announce anything, yes, I'd be disappointed, and say CES for them is a dud for the photography side of things.
