NX studio basics

One thing that I wanted to change but can't seem to find is the setting in Nikon transfer 2 where it doesn't transfer automatically to nx studio. I'd like the option of selecting only the files i want .
That is not the way Nikon Transfer and NX Studio work. You export into a folder and import from a folder.

In Nikon Transfer, you can select the images you want to transport. By default, all files on the memory card are chosen, unselect the ones you do not want to download.

You have to select any folder on your computer (or make a new one, if you desire).

To open images in NX Studio, you select which folder you want to open.
Thank you, very helpful. Can you tell me how to get rid of the unwanted one's in NX studio? Example: Now when I open the program, all my unwanted photos keep coming up. So I just select "all" and delete?

Thanks very much for that. So when I save first, should I save as jpeg?
You're welcome. I only save first if I think I might want to go back and re-edit. I try to limit my steps so when I'm finished with my editing I Export as a jpeg to my folder of choice.

In order to stay organized - say I have 50 photos of an outing.

I make two folders on my desktop for that outing always using the same naming conventions, example -

11.25.2022 Botanical Gardens

11.25.2022 Botanical Gardens.edit

I open the Botanical Gardens folder into NX Studio. As I complete the editing for each photo I EXPORT that image to, in this case 11.25 2022 Botanical Gardens.edit. This way as I go along I have all of my edited photos in one associated folder. I can't confuse the ones I edited and those I didn't edit. If I wish to go back later and edit additional ones from that outing I can easily see which ones I haven't worked on, or might want to work on.

I found this YouTuber helpful when I was learning the software.

Hope this is helpful. Ev
Yes that's another thing I was totally confused with- what has been edited and what has not. Thanks for the great tip that cleared things up for me. Now if I could only figure out this multi line graph tone curve thingy !!
Are you speaking of the levels and curve tool - grey graph with the white diagonal line, or the multi colored histogram at the top right?

Try this for levels and curve tool -

I also found the complete NX-Studio Reference Manual to be a great help.

https://nikonimglib.com/nxstdo/onlinehelp/en/

right side of the page - a PDF version.

Suggestion - it can get frustrating/overwhelming when learning software (I'm no expert) - but I found just start editing, using the tools that are more intuitive and easy - so you can see improvements to your image - export. Move to the next one. As you are comfortable with the easier tools then move one tool at a time. Just because there are bunches of tools does not mean you have to use them all or most of them to improve your images. In other words learn in chunks.

Levels & Curves is, at least it was for me a more advanced tool - you can put it to the side for the time being if you're not getting it.

Other thing I found helpful is finding a YouTube teacher I really liked - like a lot of things if you like the teacher there is something I don't know what the word is - maybe motivating.

Thanks very much for the help! Yes that curve and toning tool with the crazy lines really spun my head. I will check out the links you provided. One other question- Is it possible to lighten or darken just one specific range or area on a photo rather than lighten or darken the whole thing?
You're welcome. No NX-Studio does not allow for localized adjustments as you described as far as I can recall.

Ev

at around 23:50 into the video shows nx studio seems to allow and do local adjustments.
Thanks for the correction - I apologize. Yes Control Points is an excellent tool. I'd been working so much in Luminar Neo lately where local adjustments are made primarily with masking. Slipped my mind about Control Points.

And then I see I didn't put the youtube teacher I really liked link, which was yours.

I was also out the door in an hour to catch a flight to Sri Lanka from the U.S. for holiday, a bit unsettled I supoose :-)

Control points are great, but you may well need to end up using a whole brigade of them :)

If only they could be used to target NR, sharpening, etc, Nx Studio would do for almost all the processing I need. Pretty please, Nikon?

What I don't like with the color control point tool is the only shape in which it allows you to work with is circular. Granted, you can adjust the size of the circle bit if you have something more linear or rectangular it makes it difficult to fill in those areas.

The control point mostly selects similar colors as under the center of the control point and up to edges in the image, not just what is in the circle. If it selects something you do not want, drop a new control point there without any adjustments.

Yes that's what I've been doing but was looking for a way to delete all at once rather than one at a time

Select/Highlight all of the CPs, then right-click and select the option to Delete, that should delete all. It only works with right-clicking to delete all after highlight all (or a selection of several), any other method doesn't seem to work.

Yep I just discovered that this morning. Click on a blue sky and it selects the closest color to that blue and enables that color only to be edited. Nice feature, I had previously thought I was limited to the circle area. Thank you!
