Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to this forum and I have a problem.

When I copy a .NEF File that I edited in NX Studio to another folder only the original file without the edits is copied there. This bug appeared only recently.

(My notebook runs windows 10 with all necessary updates and NX Studio 1.4.0 64bit. My cams are Nikon D600 + D850.)

Can it be a change to WIN 10 that causes this glitch?

Or has anything changed with respect to NX Studio or the .NEF format?

Main question: How can I copy .NEF files WITH all their edited parameters?

Nikon Capture NX used to save edits directly in the NEF file. I think it was when they introduced Studio NX that they switched to saving edits in a sidecar file. If you open the folder containing any NEFs with edits, you'll see a subfolder called NKSC_PARAM. That folder stores the edits under the same file name as the NEF file. I haven't messed with it much so I don't know that much about it, but that's how it works. If you only copy the NEF file using a windows file manager, you leave the edits behind.

I just tried to copy an edited NEF using Studio NX, and it was I had guessed, it creates a NKSC_PARAM subfolder in the folder you copy the NEF to, and the NKSC edits file is copied along with the NEF.

I'm not on Windows, but have you tried to look in the NX Studio settings? On macOs version you can choose to save the edits within the files, as it was the case by default in Capture NX :

(sorry it's in French... might be in the same place, something like "Saving" ... then pick the second option and choose for Jpegs too).

It's also in the Windows version of Studio. Thanks for that tip, I'm going to change mine around I think. It's under EDIT > OPTIONS > SAVE and you have the choice of sidecar or the NEF.

Thank you for pointing that out, I've never been a big fan of the sidecar file change. I'll probably test to see if it checks for a sidecar edit when you open a NEF, but I rarely do edits on images so it doesn't matter that much to me if I lose sidecar stored edits.

But you do know that other programs will not be able to read or apply the settings or adjustments from NXStudio. If you want to use the images in anything other than NXStudio, you need to save the file in a format like TIFF, JPEG, PSD, or DNG - not a NEF.

Right. Though, not sure you wanted to answer me Eric, as I'm not the OP. Anyway, I could be wrong but it seems to me that it was not his/her question, or at least, not an issue for him/her.

If I understand well, the problem is that he/she wants to move the raw files with their edits to another folder, and seems to be willing to use them only in NX Studio (at least, after re-reading, nothing tells me otherwise).

Anyway, what you pointed should be indeed also a problem with sidecar files, as they are also containing proprietary editing data.

Welcome! Be sure to monitor your threads and reply to clarifying questions.

NX Studio by default puts all edits in a "sidecar" file. It doesn't change the actual .NEF file. As a result, if you use Windows Explorer (or the Mac equivalent) to copy files, you are only copying the original .NEF file but not the sidecar file.

CRITICAL FOR YOU TO NOTE: this is not a bug. It's the intended behavior. By saving edits in the sidecar file, you don't risk corrupting the .NEF file.

With the most version of NX Studio you can change a setting and have edits saved back to the .NEF instead of the sidecar file.

To answer your final question, the way to copy raw files taken with a Nikon camera in a lossless way is to export them from NX Studio to TIFF. That saves all the edits and you can then open them in another app. And, you still have the original .NEF file, unchanged, in case you want to edit it another way in the future.
