I'm a long time user of Capture NX2, and am now trying NX Studio to see what it is capable of.
A crucial feature of Capture NX2 for me is that you can make adjustments to the NEF, and when you save the NEF, the embedded preview in the NEF is also updated. This is important to me because I want the edited version of the image showing up in third party applications... particularly basic ones like File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (MacBook)... but also other ones like the photo viewer bundled with my NAS (which is shared with family members so they can look back on past photos). I don't want to faff around with generating secondary JPEGs (for the edited versions)... these just take up extra space and complicate the browsing experience for users other than me... the embedded preview has always been just fine for my purposes.
So... in NX Studio there is a Save option which appears to offer something along the lines of what I want:

But although this does seem to update the NEF directly for things like tagging and image editing info, rather than save to a separate metadata file, it does not seem to update the embedded preview. Therefore, in File Explorer / Finder you still see the unedited version, which is a usability PITA.
I mean, it doesn't explicitly say in the above selected option that it will update the embedded preview, but the sub-option (which I have ticked) does refer to saving the original image to a subfolder... so this implies to me that the intention is that the original embedded image is saved for posterity, and overwritten by an updated version. What else can this mean? And, enabling this option doesn't seem to do anything at all anyway... I can't see any image saved in any subfolder.
Has anyone figured out whether it's possible to update the embedded preview? If not... shame on Nikon for trashing this important feature!
FWIW, these are NEFs from a D800 if that makes any difference...
