Just updated Luminar 4.2 to 4.3. BIG MISTAKE!!

I'm running Windows 10 and used to have Skylum's Luminar 4.0 updated it to 4.1 and 4.2. Just installed 4.3 and now the system does not get passed the splash screen.

Looking at the support info of Skylum I more or less need to remove every little detail of Luminar and to a local install of 4.2, downgrade .NET, remove firewalls and stop the anti virus software etc etc.

I just want to do photo editing, not rebuild my system....

This is not the first f**k up of Skylum, it took them almost a year to have Luminar stop crashing over Panasonic RAW images due to memory leaks.

I'd move to some other editing tools if I were you

I had my share of Luminar troubles, too bad because when it works it is great!

Thanks very much for a very important heads-up.

That you'd have to do that kind of surgery to do a fresh install of 4.2 is absurd.

I'd had some success with a much earlier version of Luminar and was considering v.4.

Now I'll skip, at least until the number of posts reporting problems is much lower.

I had Luminar 4.1 so many months and my system works flawlessly. Now yesterday I updated to 4.3 and there have been so many issues that I don't know where to begin. Those updates don't always go as planned, yeah, I know. But long story short, you are NOT alone - it has happened to others too.

When I tried the 4.1 trial on my Mac I had so many issue with the program crashing left and right. Each time I had to go into my files, fine the folder for Luminar and change the name in order for the software to work again. This would last for a while then the same thing would happen. I took it off my computer. Until they fix those issues I won't purchase it.

It's strange that some people report serious problems with Luminar updates, while others like me don't have any. Version 4.3 works fine on my Win10 Professional, as have all of the previous updates even before I switched from Win 7. It would be interesting to know what the difference is, and what percentage of people have these problems.

It's unfortunately not the first time that Skylum fails to update Luminar. I try Luminar since 2017, not one upgrade or update worked in the first version. Meanwhile I am no longer wondering about installation problems, crashes, memory leaks...

Promised features were often discarded and replaced by new spectacular features.

Basic features of a serious image processing program are still missing today. For example:

- a reliable color management system...

- a real-time histogram when changing exposure values ...

- the print dialog, e.g. the possibility to select image sections for printing.

After 4 years of support of Skylum and Luminar, this is the end for me.

I have invested enough money in Skylums Luminar. Many promises were not realized. Instead, I can now fake details of my photo, e.g. of the sky.

Last words @Skylum: No thanks.

Working great for me on my Mac.

A little slow to process/save a file . . . but it has always been like that.

The sky replacement tool is worth the price of admission alone!

Unless you have a better sky which delivers the same type of lighting (regarding shadows or the lack of thereof) from a day approximately the same time of year and time of approximately the same Lattitude and the same direction regarding to the sun position you can forget about sky replacement. If the sky fails on even one of the listed constraints it will stick out like a sore thumb , no matter what you try in editing. And therein lies the rub, unless you have created a specialized sky library with good skies where you don’t have the sun in the frame but at varying angles behind you then you are in trouble as for most of your shots you will not have a suitable replacement.

I also had trouble upgrading from 4.2 to 4.3 on my Windows 10 machine. Solution for me turned out to be quite simple. Someone suggested that I disable Malwarebytes, then run the install, then if successful re-enable Malwarebytes. Worked perfectly for me.

Yes . . . you make some good points and with certain situations there are image constraints that are difficult to overcome . . . but . . . if you have say a full blue sky in your original image it is easy to introduce some additional cloud with the app . . . or if you have a full grey sky it is also easy to introduce some cloud definition with the app . . . either of these applications may not or have minimal conflict with the overall lighting of the scene . . . the app also does a very good job of blending with the horizon or other objects within the sky.

Adding or changing a sky is at best an artificial application no matter what tool you use or how you do it but with the LUM 4 tool you can very quickly and easily accomplish some adjustments which to me as a hobbyist are very acceptable . . . to the pros and purists in the world they may not be acceptable nor the concept acceptable . . . to each his own!

Thanks for your comments and perspective!

There is a reason some virus protection software block functions from Luminar, it uses shady practices that normally only harmful software uses, like (completely unnecessary) URL shortener with obfuscated URL for internal purposes, thus the URL never will be entered manually nor does the obfuscation bring anything worthwhile to the processs, it only prevents security conscious people from checking if that access is valid and thus should be granted, Even if the URL may not have pointed to problematic content, such redirection services are a prime target for hackers to gain contrl over and then use them to propagate illegal content. If I would find such practices in software I bought would have asked for an immediate fix or my money back because disabling virus protection undermines every existing security scheme.

Wo is to say that there hasn’t been a truly malicious program injected into the file you downloaded and due to disabling your protection your computer now is hosting child porn or grinding keyword hashes for nefarious purposes?

No problems here. Luminar 4.3 running great.

WRT anti virus/malware programs Leo Laporte the Tech Guy (My go to expert) and many other Windows gurus recommend that you only use Windows built-in security - that is very good. Third party apps (Norton, McAfee, and the others) will slow you down and can even be dangerous since they monkey with the deepest recesses of your operating system.

Works great for me. No issue upgrading. WIn 10

I'm running vanilla Windows 10 with std Windows security and Skylum advises me to turn off my Internet security! I've asked them if they have lost their minds!

Advising your customers to turn off your firewall and virus detection is to my asking car drivers to leave the doors unlocked at all times, turn off their airbags and not use seat belts. A very strange attitude towards security they have there at Skylum...

See this expert of their email:

*********************************************

First, please try the following solution:

Please make sure to do that for all the security software you have on your computer. A great number of customers have already reported that it helps. Also, please specify which antivirus software you're using.

If the issue remains, please download Process Explorer via the link below and kill all processes related to your antivirus software:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

If you're still unable to launch Luminar, please try launching Luminar in Compatibility Mode:

  1. Go to C:\Program Files\Skylum\Luminar 4 and right-click Luminar 4.exe file.
  2. Go to Properties > Compatibility.
  3. Enable 'Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 8' checkbox (see the screenshot: http://prntscr.com/tka660 )
  4. Press 'Ok' and try to launch Luminar.
Please let us know how it goes.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Best wishes,

Not only that, their support is utterly clueless. Often it seems they don't even know their own products and recently they can be read on their own forums that both the support and the developers are totally clueless as to the reason why the software doesn't even start - which is quite damning given that they previously have put the blame on either:

- the user

- the security companies providing firewalls/anti virus suites

- the users excessive use of the library (anything beyond a few 100 images in a single library they say is excessive often advising things that will lose all edits and ratings you may have applied to the images in those libraries).

- the hardware (even though it is clear that the used hardware is way beyond the bare minimum)...

- wrong language settings (ever tried using their shortcuts if you don't have an US keyboard?)

- unreasonable expectations

So to sum it up: It's always someone else's problem...

I recently updated from Win 7 to Win10. Luminar ran fine on W7 but now with W10 it crashes the computer when I launch it. It shuts the computer down completely dead, as if I had pulled out the power connector, waits a few seconds and then reboots as if starting from cold.
Luminar support have no answeres, other than delete and then reload the graphics driver software.
I've not only updated the graphics driver, I have switched from AMD to Nvidia graphics card, but it's still the same.

Windows 10 user who downloaded the 4.3 version and is not having any issues ... **That said , I believe it is ALWAYS prudent to wait a bit before jumping on a a new software revision to ensure their are no "undocumented features" (i.e. bugs !) . I was fortunate to down load this new revision 4.3 as soon as it came out and I can get past the splash screen , load and work on images , etc. with no problems - next time I may not be as lucky thus I will adhere to own rule to wait a little while before downloading a new revision - a bird in hand is worth two in the bush .

Skylum is way ahead of the curve there. This time they managed to cripple their crop tool with intent. Now you no longer can rotate your image while cropping and showinga grid (a now reduced selection) - important for example to correct the horizon line. No that function has been "improved" by separating the crop tool and the rotation filter, only that the latter has no way of showing a grid - so now you need to eyeball the rotation which is infinitely more precise, reliable and faster than before when you had to deal with the stupid grid overlay encumbering your view.
