I reset my R1 to factory defaults. In Menu 2 I set Flash to Ext.

On screen I can see the flash sign with EXT but on shutter half press I see at the left side of the screen a crossed out circle with a flash sign inside it. Naturally the flash doesn't fire now.

How do I make this sign be un-crossed out?

Thank you,
Yehuda

I can't caste an idea on how to remove the crossed out circle, but have a thought. The firmware upgrade we had for the R1 (seem to recall there was one)would a factory reset effect this ? Just a shot in the dark.

Regards.

Ernest.

John helped me to solve the problem.

Have no idea about the effect of resetting on the firmware upgrade, but you raised an important point!
Now how I check which firmware version does my camera have???

Thank you, and say hello on my behalf to Jill.

As I remember, the firmware upgrade did not apply to the majority of R1's but to only a few models for certain countries including the U.S. If the R1 has worked well for you, don't bother as there'll be nothing to upgrade.

I noticed you said you set the R1 flash to "Ext" in the menu. Are you using a separate commercial flash unit? If so, that's OK but if you are using a Sony flash, such as the F32X, then this setting should be Int. and not Ext.

Unfortunately the flash, on both my R1's, fire intrmittently, so resetting factory defaults didn't help.

I decided to send the camera to a lab. For this I called twice and emailed teleplancamerarepair.com but was not fortunate to have any reply.

Verdict: Bye bye two Sony R1's. Vered is moving to Canon 500D DSLR.

Take care and thank you for your care,
Yehuda

I'm using a Sunpak-383 external flash. It fires once out of maybe 3 so I can't trust this camera for serious work. I tried it also with Vivitar 285 - same thing.

Thank you anyway,
Yehuda

but I have had no problems using R1 with the 'matched' dedicated Sony flash - I guess it's not Sony's fault if non-Sony flashes don't always work...

Hmm, sorry to hear this - frustrating ! I wonder if there is an issue with the flash contacts on the hotshoe due to wear then, although if this is the case it should also affect performance with all flashes - have you checked a different flash unit?

To check which version(firmware)you have, just do this:
  1. Connect the AC adaptor to the camera and to an AC power source.
NOTE: This update cannot be performed with the camera powered by battery. Be sure to use the supplied AC-L15 AC adaptor to insure constant power.

WARNING!!: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.
  1. Set the mode dial to (Auto adjustment mode) before turning on the power.
  2. Press and hold the "MENU" button, and while holding, power on the camera, releasing the "MENU" button only after 2 seconds have passed.
NOTE: When the "Cyber-shot" screen disappears, release the MENU button.
  1. If the menu is not displayed, press the "MENU" button.
  2. Move the multi-selector rightward to [Setup], and then move it further rightward as needed to display the setup screen (as shown at right).
  3. In the "Setup" screen, move the multi-selector downward to select [Setup 2].
  4. If [Version] is not displayed, turn off the power and redo this section of the procedure (Set the camera to update mode).
  5. If "2" is displayed in [Version], this update is not required.
All this is more clearly explained here:

I had a similar problem with my sony f828, it was caused by the contacts on the hot shoe. A thorough clean of the contacts cured the problem, certainly worth a try.

Havr you tried the pencil eraser trick? sometimes cleaning contacts with a pencil eraser can do the trick, although I have heard that used more for battery compartments than flash contacts. I'm sorry to hear about the demise of your R1. Have you considered the micro 4/3 format? The Panasonic GF1 is quite nice, or the Sony a550 DSLR, with its articulating screen and live view.

The pencil eraser was my first thing I did...
I decided to give Vered my Canon 500D to replace her R1.

It's covered by a 5 years warranty so looks that it will be a great solution for her.

Thank you, Haver,
Yehuda

I recall having problems with my flash & it is the "Real" thing. I battled trying to find a solution to get the darn thing working, I managed to get it to work.

On evening Glyn & I were chatting on Skype & he related his problem, same as I had, none firing flash. I told him what I did & it fixed it.

The terminals on the camera were dirty, although I could not see any dirt. I took a lead pencil with a blunt lead & scribbled (rubbed) on each of the contacts. Then used a cloth to clean & polish the contacts. Viola it worked. The same worked for Glyn. so when ever my flash is not recognized, out comes the pencil.

Don't ask me what prompted me to use a pencil, I can't answer that LOL. But it worked. I suppose the fine carbon from the pencil acted as a soft abrasive, my only conclusion.

This is just another shot you may try.

Shalom.

I will give it a Wizard try.
Still I wonder why is this so only on R1 cameras...

Take care, Haver,
Yehuda
