Wow!! That is an incredible photo!! I have really got to get off my butt and try this! Again, awesome photo!!--Amywww.amystuff.com

I took the photo at +1 Sharpness.

I took three photos... one at -1.0 EV, one at 0 EV and one at +1.0 EV.

I brought them all into photoshop. the +1.0 EV was too bright and I didn't use it.

The -1.0 EV I increased brightness +2 and contrast +10.

I copied the 0EV and pasted it as a new layer on top of the modified -1.0EV shot.

I set transparancy to about 45%.

Added USM just a bit.

That's it!

Amy
Amy,

This is fantastic. Is this with +2 sharpness? Could you please
take a second to detail what steps from Shay's method that you used
for this?

Amy,

I am amazed with your picture! It is so clear and sharp! One question though....

When I am in manual mode, I am unable to adjust the EV settings. How did you accomplish choosing what EV settings to use, without changing the aperture or shutter speed? Were you in aperture priority? Or auto?

Thanks,

Eric

Eric,

You don't adjust it directly (like in auto mode)... you adjust your shutter speed until it reads -1.0 EV above the aperture & shutter speed settings.

Hope that helps!

Hello SFishy

I can't get on to your site. Is it down ?
A DNS Look-up failed as well.

Do you have an IP address for it ? I amy be able to go there via direct address ?

Thanks

Hey Shay...

I'm anxious to try your method on a skyline, but in the meantime I
was working on a new still life idea and decided to give your
method a try to help reduce any possible noise. It works AWESOME
(and also gave me some real leverage in playing with brightness and
contrast too).

Amy,

Out of curiousity, wouldn't exposure bracketing work the same way and be less work? If one goes into the setup menu and chooses bracket step = ±1.0, then leaves the EV at 0.0, wouldn't the F707 produce -1, 0, and +1 EV shots on it's own?

Additionally, if one finds that the exposure values are too extreme for the overlay techinque, then stepping down to ±0.7 or ±0.3 bracketing may improve the quality of the overlays. Just a thought. :-)

This question is for Amy / Shay and anyone else who has had success at this.

When you overlay multiple images, how do you ensure that they are perfectly overlayed? It seems to me that even if the tripod moves a fraction of an inch in between shots, that they will not line up perfectly.

Any advice?

Great job, Amy! I see another POTD award coming! :-)

That is where a stout tripod comes into play. If the tripod moves a fraction of an inch on me, I start over. Under normal circumstances light manipulation of the camera setting does not upset the cameras positioning. I also use a remote control in my shots. But the key is the tripod, flimsy=blurry and stout=sharp. I read one quote from a professional photographer I thought was funny. The guy was asked what kind of tripod he used, and he said he used three, heavy, heavier, and heaviest. ;-)

Now lets say that there is a slight shift in the image. When you put the image on a layer you can move that layer around in one pixel increments using the move tool in PSE and the cursor keys (don't know what the equivalent is in other editors). So you can get the image positioned properly if need be.--Shay My Sony F707 Gallery: http://shaystephens.com/portfolio.asp

Looks like SFishy & Shay have found a great combination for the F707 sharpness. Pictures are beautiful and crystal clear.

Thanks for the information and photo sharing.

Amy,

When you put the second layer on the first one, what merge option are you using, Nornal?

I also believe that you flattened your image before applying the USM, correct?

Amy,

If all you want is to reduce the noise, why have you to play with +-EV? Can you not do this procedure with 2 correctly exposed shots? I think that as the noise "grains" are spread at random, putting 2 images together will result in cancelling out the noise. Or am I missing something?

Thank you, Yehuda
