Hello everybody,

here you can see one and the same picture as displayed by Windows' standard program (left) and GIMP (right).

The problem I'm having is that what I'm editing both with GIMP and Sony's "Image Data Converter SR" has a red tinge in several other programs - Windows' simple viewer, facebook, this sites' viewer.

NOT a good thing.

I'd be really happy if someone could help me fix this - I got some additional information, too:
  • Sony SLT a55V / shooting RAW format
  • my screen is calibrated using spyder2express
  • I edit RAW files with Sony's Image Data Converter SR, then JPEG them
  • I use GIMP for cutting images / fine tuning
  • I checked the camera and every program involved: they all use sRGB color space
  • GIMP and Sony show the same colors
Advice is highly appreciated, thanks a lot!

Just for fun, instead of saving them as Jpeg before loading them into Gimp, try saving as a TIFF then open into Gimp. Never allow anything to strip the EXIF data.

Thanks for your quick reply!

I tried that following your idea, but I'm still getting the same result... Is there anything else I need to consider?

Windows' viewer and most Web browsers aren't color-managed. They don't claim to display correct colors. They just slam the data out to your monitor without correcting it. There's nothing you can do about that. Color on the Web is approximate at best.

Perhaps someone who knows can post a list of which Web browsers do support color management. Then at least it'd look right to you , although anyone using an unmanaged browser would still see it however their monitor happens to be set up.

Now that explains a lot XD

I take it the red tinge won't appear on my prints?

It is likely I have a lot less expertise in this than Doug but...

Yes. Colour managed means being able to or being set to read the monitor profile AND also the embedded colour space of the image

Firefox can be switched on or off to read the colourspace of the JPEG.

However, let us not talk about the web because the OP is saying that the desktop windows programs differ in rendering the picture from the hard disk?

I suspect that there is some metadata or info in the JPEG that IS NOT sRGB because the simple minded programs are defaulting to sRGB and the clever programs are reading the info?

Happy to hear more info

facebook, this sites' viewer.
Here you are depending on your browser: IE is partially color managed, Firefox is color managed (although is can be disabled), Chrome is not color managed.

If you are shooting raw, then setting the camera for sRGB has absolutely not effect.

You say they all use sRGB, but this seems unlikely given your problems, Have you examined the Exif data to see what color space tag has been embedded with your jpegs when they are saved?

Exactly what I was thinking. That's why I suggested saving as a Tiff and opening back up. He said it didn't work though. Something certainly is stripping the metadata isn't it.

The EXIF data says it's sRGB, EXIF version is 0230...
As I've mentioned, wherever I look I find sRGB color space.

The Windows viewer is not color managed
This is the cause of the viewer issues. Also I find that the windows image viewer applies a yellowish color cast to all images. The built in viewer is convenient, but it is garbage. Microsoft can and should do better (and in the past has so) .

Some out of date but still interesting info.

I use IrfanView

Highly recommended to me by a friend.
