G7 sensor size up to task of 10 megapixel ?

I wish I could see a review on the Pentax K100D. Anybody have a link ?

Wish Canon had just taken the 610 camera and added features like:

1) DIDGIC III
2) Image stabilization
3) External Flash
4) Some if the additional G7 controls

I'm happy with 5 million QUALITY pixels instead of shoehorning more pixels in a smaller sensor and doing hocu pocus software manipulation on higher pixel image.

No matter what mathemetics is involved, you can NOT add information back into image that the sensor didn't pick up in the first place.

I suspect it depends on the individual using it.

I have seen output of three cameras with the same sensor and they have all been quite awful. To expect a miracle with the G7 is being a bit unrealistic. Forget high ISO, they suck at low ISO.

In the Casio Z-1000 review, they are happy it still has detail at ISO 100. I actually see smearing even in the Iso50 clip. But ISO 200 it is just about gone. It is not just crops. Download the full size ISO 50 sample gallery image 14 and look around. Smear city.

ISO 200:

In the panasonic FZ50 review, the review complains about low contrast detail being smeared even at ISO 100. And again samples bear that out. Load up sample 13 from the gallery. YEEUK! It looks like a finger painting.

And the A640 which definitely has the same sensor, I posted a link to a thread with the comparison (has originals, upsized, downsized), it really doesn't matter because the result is the same. Noise is much worse with the new 10MP sensor, even after downsizing. Here is the downsize comparison.

wow, your right. they look awful.

i suppose you'll be giving up photography now and we won't be hearing from you any longer?

Ha ha .... cute response.

It makes you think though. perhaps the current P&S sensor technology has reached it's maximum capability and all they can do is fiddle with software based on mathemetics. You can' mathematically put in what the sensor never captures.

Too bad other camera manufacturers besides Sigma never persued the Foveo X3 technology. Seems to me that the Foveon X3 technology had some real potentials. On paper, being able to tripple the numbers of sensors in the same size would seem to indicate finer resolution. I'm sure it's just a matter if doing some serious development work using the Foveon X3 technology.

It means I wouldn't buy a camera with this sensor.

If photography was a requirement, you wouldn't still be here insulting people. There is ample evidence I actually use my camera for something.

For what I do (Primarily landscape) this kind of heavy detail smear would pretty much ruin it.

sensors) .. noise reduction is not magic .. it is mathematics .. :-)
Show me some proof. Because if you bothered to look at the thread
below its shows that this is not the case at all.
I own both a G6 and a Sony H5 so I know exactly what the noise
levels at ISO400 are for these sensors, what more "proof" do I need
? besides consulting the ICX sensor data sheets of course ..
Yes and as you stated. Noise reduction is not magic. Sony just
cranked up the software noise reduction and mushed out detail in
the process.
yeah I know .. people prefer to follow theoretical nonsense instead of judging by picture evidence .. sic transit gloria mundi

.. but I've been there and done it .. the pixel peeping ad nauseam .. it doesn't serve any purpose at all ..
Quoting the H5 review:
"... thanks to Sony's much heavier noise reduction, which produces
a superficially cleaner-looking image, but one with slightly more
obvious noise reduction artefacts. It's a matter of taste, but for
me the S3 IS has the edge thanks to Canon's less heavy-handed
approach to noise reduction."
I don't give a toss about reviews .. if I had to listen or take serious notice of them I would still be shooting with my 40 yo Canon FT-QL and only with that one, besides it is only the view of ONE person and the lots of info provided in the specific forums statistically weaken down such statements to almost irrelevancy ..
Instead of noise you get mush. Both unacceptable to me.
OK show us your mush-less pictures ? taken with some APS-C sensor gear and $5000 of hi-Q glass ?
What are you expecting of a Prosumer cam after all ? one size, fits all ?

Forget the 610 it would have been far easier to just add Digic II (for AF sensitivity and speed) to the existing G6 and paint it black ! . that's all it needed (apart from far better QC in lens construction to cut down the duds) .... Heck if they wanted to they could have put the 10Mp sensor in and make an extra model - the G10 as well.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting comparison. I wonder how the A620/630 would stack up in similar tests? Re your comment below, upsizing shouldn't increase noise. cheers, gkl
B: The A610 is upsized from 5MP to 10MP for the compare. You would
expect it get keel hauled. But to my Eyes shooting ISO400/800, the
610 still has less noise when upsized to 10MP than the new sensor
does.

I think they have really gone too far in pixel shrink.
Sure looks like it. Hope the A630 is better.

Noise I can accept, but this goopy stuff every time there's a tree or some grass in the distance has got to go. I'm just afraid all new camera models will be this way.

Yep, in hindsight, it seems that the 7 mp sensor of the G6 really represented the high point of small sensor image quality / low noise. I think the DIGICII G6 with black paint job would have been the perfect G7.

Also, I feel DigicIII is not helping or Canon has treated NR differently or incorrectly in DigicIII (just my thoughts) Need to compare A640 vs G7.
