I was hoping FW 2.0 would add Subject Detection to options that could be tied to a function button/dial, but it seems it still takes a menu dive (or i-menu dive) to get to it.

I’ve got Focus-Mode and AF-Area Mode tied to the command dials (via front Fn button) which I like, but can’t find an easy way to switch Subject Detection. Best I’ve come up with is tie video button to top item in My Menu, which I have set to Subject Detection. Still takes button presses. Same with I-menu.

Anybody found a better answer for Zf?

Had Nikon chosen to use the F2 Prism as their inspiration for the Zf we would have gained an additional function button on the camera and a lever that could control the 3 Focus Modes or be used for a 3 position custom function switch such as Banks 1, 2, & 3. That can't be changed but I suspect that when the Mark II version arrives in another 4-6 years we may see more function buttons.

As it is now Nikon could implement a very useful added functionality for the front function button. That would be to hold the front button and use the front command dial to set the area mode and the rear command dial to adjust the subject detection. Actually Nikon dropped the ball here in the 2.0 Firmware because those who use Back Button Focus have no need for the present AF Mode/AF Area selection for the custom setting on the front button. BTW my old D750 (now my nephews camera) and both of my Z cameras are set up for BBF. To be honest I find the combined AF On function tied to the shutter release is rather dumb.

This is exactly what I wish. I almost never switch out of AF-C.

You can set the subject detection in the my menu and set it at the top , the you program a button to “ highest ranked item in the my menu”

See original post. That’s what I did. Not as good as being able to assign to a control wheel.
