Why, Some Here Can't Grasp What iPad Is & Is Not -- Rocket Science Is Not Needed??

And you'll just need a bigger pillow.
I don't have an iPhone or any smart phone. But I was given an iPod Touch last Dec. (didn't want one, said not to get it for me) and I can't live without it. My favorite use? At night, in bed, streaming all kinds of audio programs. I stash it under my pillow before I fall asleep. When I wake up I reach for it and check emails and the weather. I used to daily go through the rigamarole of using my MBP for that but now I never even fire it up on my way out the door.

The iPad is simply a no-brainer for me. The same power and features I already have with a larger screen would suit me fine. And here in NYC I've never wished for more than wifi on my Touch. I can get online nearly every place I am, even on buses. I don't care what it isn't. If it works at all it'll be a hit in my house.

Cats love warm computers. When I had a G4 dual, it worked as a space heater. It pumped out some major BTU's. A cat can fit right between the handles. She would camp out on top for much of the winter.

My wife is a gamer. I know the iPad will end up being hers.

Not sure if I will use it for an eReader very much. I won't know until I try it.

Wifi is all I need.

From the other part of your post, it sounds like your iPad will soon be a sPad. (As in "sleeping Pad", for the cat!)

I don't know of any PawSense-like application ("Cat-Like Typing Detected") for the iPad. So watch out for the kitty twiching in her sleep, followed by express delivery of 10 pounds of sliced turkey, 5 pounds of high-grade catnip, and 100 of the finest "4 and 20 songbirds" gourmet pies.

My love of cats is in conflict with my love of birds

Personally, I don't give a DA** about the IPad, and I think it's a waste of cash , but I'm still doing to buy one because it'll be awesome for my kids.

I mean, not as a "throw them the IPad instead of real books" thing. But more as a fun toy to sit down with them, and play interactive "Where is Waldo" type of games, or identify colors, find this or that object, etc

As time goes by, new uses will be found. It might become a vital tool for the disabled. It will be good for point of sale. Artist will use it as a sketch pad.

I hope MacSpeech will run on the iPad.

I see those kinds of activities all the time at Panera.

I have even gone there to eat alone and work . . . set up my online gradebook, grade papers, record grades, etc.

I am thinking along the same lines. My iPod Touch was stolen at the college where I teach, but I wasn't thrilled with it anyway. Not that I wanted it stolen! It seemed too small to do much reading on, and I couldn't type on it well at all. I kept looking at my fingers to see what the problem was. They are NOT fat. So the larger iPad would suit me fine. I am especially interested in it as an e-reader. Can't wait to see what people think of it when they really have one in their hands.
