Why, Some Here Can't Grasp What iPad Is & Is Not -- Rocket Science Is Not Needed??

That big screen with SatNav (real GPS) would indeed be a great thing on this tablet, it would immediately justify its price.

I still dont understand how they are organizing their product lineup.

Ipod=music
Ipod Touch=?
Ipad=surfing the web, leisure
Iphone=phone+ipod Touch+GPS etc
Macbook=work, school

The kids will never ask for an Ipod touch when they have seen the iPad, surely they will eventually discontinue the Ipod Touch.

The iPod touch is an iPad that you can put in your pocket. While the iPad is cool, it's not necessarily something you want to carry around town if you don't want to take a bag with you.

An iPhone, or smartphone, yes. You'd probably have a phone with you regardless where you go and if you choose to spend some downtime web browsing or playing a game, instead of being in the environment, then ok. But to lug around a 17 inch laptop just to go and meet friends is kind of curious to me. Those things are massive and I myself would have to have a real need to have one with me all the time like that.

My comment probably came off as critical, but I acknowledge that we don't all use technology the same way.

It's also easy to steal, unfortunately, as I found out at the college where I teach. I haven't replaced it as I really found it a bit too small for reading as well as typing e-mail. Lucky me! I was just waiting for an iPad and didn't know it.

Do not, necessarily, always carry them around town with us either; so, why in the world would we want to do so with our iPad. Just remember that iPad is a "new type of mobile device" that is between the notebook computer and iPhone; it's, not necessarily intended to replace either, though for some, it will offer advantages over notebook computers, a netbook, Amazon/Sony Readers, iPhone, or iPod Touch. IMO, those the iPad is intended for, already know who they are; and, these are the type people that will be snapping up the iPads as soon as they are released. :|

To OP,
... it is not that Some Here cannot grasp what the iPad is and is not.....

it is that we don't like what it is, and are vocal in explaining what it is not, so that someone gives it to us.

Once the price of SSDs, in my opinion, comes down, then netbooks will be very competitive becasue they will run much faster. So, Apple was smart in getting this out now.

I see the iPad merely as a large iPod Touch, not so interesting to me.

I wish it had a real operating system, not one that wants to sync with iTunes.

I wish it was a Tablet Computer, not a iPod-Pad, designed, it seems to me, to be a platform for subscription based consumption.

I don't mind the netbook throughout my house.... and, once one places the cover on the iPad, it begins to take on that form factor, anyway.

So, I just don't get it; are you inferring, some of use (including business executives/professionals, sales people with clients, students and others) don't go out to latte shops with our attache cases (or notebook computers alone), projects, contracts/agreements to work on, a book to read or a magazine or journal of some type, and that our wives do not similarly carry their handbags (some I see, carrying a MacBook, inside them, is not a problem)? :|

Recently, I completed a graduate-level, advanced science course for managers/directors of science research programs/facilities, and some of us regularly met, with our notebook computers at Starbucks, as we needed our computers in order to discuss and coordinate what we were doing?

And, an "Apple Tablet Computer", is likely also in the works; but, even Apple, says the iPad, is not it. Actually, IMO, there's a need for both, and Apple will obviously before long bring some sort of "Apple Tablet Computer", to market for those that won't/need one; and, with their successful development of iPad, such could occur almost over night, so expect the year 2010, to be real big for Apple --- as, Apple is showing that it knows how to go after the big bucks, starting with the Publishing Industry/text books/Schools/Universities/ and students first ---- hopefully, you are aware of the many billions of USA dollars, this market represents in the USA alone and Apple, is now about to capture it. :-)

The iPad IS a large iPod Touch (with optional 3G), which is actually pretty clever when you think about it. They're starting with a proven design, one that is elegant in terms of lack of extraneous external controls and ports. ("Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away" -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery).

From Day One, the iPad will appeal to many iPhone, iPod Touch, and Kindle users. From Day One, it will have a SDK for developing native applications, and it will also be useful for running in-house Web-based applications (Safari + WiFi + WPA2 + large IPS color screen, remember?) I can see racks of these at places like nurse's stations -- a doctor making the rounds on the floor could grab one, carry it around to patients' rooms, pull up charts and pictures of CT/MRI/X-Ray scans, make notes, etc. -- then return it when done.

Well, this is why I asked the question--I may have completely misinterpreted Greg's post. In his post, his comments and observations were mostly related to the iPad's use an an entertainment device and how he would sell his iPod Touch and replace it with an iPad. In among those comments, he wrote,

"I see it as a terrific device for playing the kind of games I like such as virtual pool, scrabble, Space Invaders and some card games. I have fat fingers and that has hindered me on the ipod touch. I love the idea of having more screen real estate. I have always lugged my 17 inch HP laptop out to the coffee shops where I meet friends and of ten just have coffee. I spend all of that time browsing the web and using skype."

I interpreted "where I meet friends and often just have coffee" to mean that these are casual get-togethers with friends, not clients and not client meetings. So I am just curious why one would bring a huge 17" laptop under those circumstances.

FWIW, I have brought my laptop to coffee shops many times when meeting with clients to go over project details and such, but when I'm meeting them for social reasons, the last thing I want to do is drag around my laptop to use to kill a few minutes of downtime. I'm actually relieved not to have to stare at a computer screen and most of my friends who also use computers all day are the same.

My question may have appeared to be baiting, but I was just curious to learn a little more about the experience of people outside my immediate circle. No harm intended.

Hi Marion, I do this for a few reasons I suppose. One of them is I like to share my pictures with friends and using my laptop makes that pretty easy. I use the laptop while waiting for them or after they leave. But like you, I am also a people watcher. I meet new friends while there alone and we often discuss computers and photography. So if you like, just call me "New School". LOL

I go to those coffee shops almost daily. If I were to be specific I would have to say "not always to meet and be with friends". I do go there alone at times as mentioned either to just be alone or to just get away from the house. Please understand this. I work on PC's for a living. This is a great place for me to meet potential customers and believe me , I have.

I believe you actual " Curiosity " was more about why I would carry the 17" laptop. First off it is not as heavy as you make it seem. I weigh like 280 lbs myself. However, as I mentioned, for those times when I am just going out to be amongst the crowd per se, I will most likely grab the iPad. The iPad is far lighter and will work fine for sharing pictures. That of course is what this post was about to start with is the benefit of an iPad.

Except that tablet computers have been around for quite awhile. They have been a massive marketing failure. If all the people who claim to need a tablet actually bought one, that would not be the case.

I have no idea if Apple has made the right choice with iPad. But saying "no" to yet another silly tablet computer was a brilliant decision.

Thanks for your reply Greg, it's always interesting to hear another person's perspective. For me, carrying around my 15 or 13 inch laptop is a royal pain and I only do so when absolutely necessary for meetings with clients. So when I read that you take your 17 inch laptop for casual get togethers, my mind boggled because to me, those things are huge!

Anyway, I expect that I will get an iPad and that, I can see taking with me most of the time so on that point, we do not differ. I hear that Apple has already sold 40,000 on preorder.

In the first two hours that the iPad was available for purchase, 50,000 orders were placed.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

iPod Touch = gaming.

As a high school teacher, I can confirm that the Touch will never get replaced by the iPad. It's all about the pocketability and "stealth" factor.

The kids will never ask for an Ipod touch when they have seen the iPad, surely they will eventually discontinue the Ipod Touch.
the touch seemed like a proof of concept for the iPad. There will be a market for the touch. It's about $300 less than the iPad.

My arthritis is making using a mouse too painful. I changed to a trackball, but the reaching is excruciating. The iPad might be how I compute from here on out.

Holding a book in my right hand is uncomfortable, but acceptable. My left arm works well, so the iPad might be my best alternative.

I don't have an iPhone or any smart phone. But I was given an iPod Touch last Dec. (didn't want one, said not to get it for me) and I can't live without it. My favorite use? At night, in bed, streaming all kinds of audio programs. I stash it under my pillow before I fall asleep. When I wake up I reach for it and check emails and the weather. I used to daily go through the rigamarole of using my MBP for that but now I never even fire it up on my way out the door.

The iPad is simply a no-brainer for me. The same power and features I already have with a larger screen would suit me fine. And here in NYC I've never wished for more than wifi on my Touch. I can get online nearly every place I am, even on buses. I don't care what it isn't. If it works at all it'll be a hit in my house.
