Why No IS On My Prime

Well, the improvement is much bigger if you have a solid tripod and are complaining about not having IS. A good tripod will make your shot stable. Sounds like you are not shooting in situations that require fast action, for instance, so setting up the shot on a tripod and using the 2 or 10 second timer, and maybe mirror lock up will let you shooting nice long exposures and keep at low ISO.

They really chose to make it more difficult for them, so they could make more money.

Erik - that's what businesses do. Businesses exist to make THEM money. Charities exist to help people out of the kindness of their hearts. They could do lots of things that benefit US but go out of business. Canon could have put 1-series AF in all their bodies and people would gladly pay extra money for it. But they don't because it's bad business. Whether you like it or not isn't relevant enough. It's only relevant if throngs of people agree with you enough to leave Canon or choose Sony/pentax/oly over canon. There just aren't enough of you yet.

It is all about keeping the customer happy f*ck their business losses. > --

Erik - that's a very nice thought but in multi-national corporations it's very naive. Why? When you have millions of customers you can't make everyone happy. The companies that survive and thrive are the ones that make the best decisions regarding who they're going to make happy and when. Sometimes a business loss is needed - like what Toyota has done with free financing and free maintenance to overcome the publicity hit from the recalls. Or when a restaurant owner comps a meal if there's a problem in order to get repeat business.

But seriously, in your Wizard of Oz world, where does it stop?

Some customers want 1-series AF in rebel line. It would make them happy - should canon give it to them?
Some customers want a $3000 1-series camera. Should canon give it to them?
Some customers want weather sealing on rebel. Should canon give it to them?
Some people want 8fps on rebel. . SHould canon give it to them?

We could go on and on. But the idea is - should canon give every customer what they want? Or is it really only what you want that canon needs to pay attention to?

I'm sure lots of brides out there want to pay just $500 for their wedding to be shot. The photographers that give them what they want aren't going to stay in business very long.

I'm not sure that is true. The IS version of the super-tele lenses all have better IQ than the old ones. 70-200 4IS is also sharper than the original non-IS version. Zoom lens has even more complicated structures than prime. I think Canon's decision was, and will be, entirely market driven.
