What to upgrade first?

Hi,

I have an A7Riii and a FE 24-70mm f4 ZA lens (plus a couple of primes).

Ideally I would like to upgrade both to an A7Riv and a 24-70mm F2.8 GM.

Unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade both at the same time.

Which should I upgrade first?

My interest is mainly travel and landscape photography and I want the best IQ/resolution/sharpness (ok I pixel peep) for my limited resources.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Yan

I would go for the lens.

The Riii gives me enough IQ to work with.

How much do you use the 24-28mm range?
Tamron 28-75 could also be an option.

+1 I think you'll see a lot more of a difference by upgrading the lens. The 24-70/4 is a nice size, but its IQ is quite middling. The GM is head and shoulders above it.

I also own the A7R III and see little to no reason to upgrade to the A7R IV.

In travel and landscape photography there might be minor reasons but in real world pictures? I highly doubt it.

The lens should be more inferior to the 24-70mm 2.8 GM than the III generation to the IV generation camera body so I'd also go for the better lens.

Maybe a fast prime lens could be worth considering as well though. Instead of buying 24-70mm 2.8, maybe a good 35mm 1.4 or 24 mm GM lens (I bet it outperforms the 24-70mm GM quite nicely at 24mm).

You're not really going to benefit much from the A7RIV upgrade for your photography needs. If you're doing travel, invest in a decent all in one with a bigger focal range. If you're doing landscape, focus on a quality wide angle zoom or prime lens between 12-35mm.

Lens.

As others have indicated, the lens should be first. I have the 24-70 GM and love it. Money wise, the Tamron 25-78 plus the new Tamron 17-25 f2.8 would give you a lot of range for a lot less than the 24-70 GM.

I do not know the A7RIII, but what do you miss most?

61Mp versus 42Mp is not as dramatic as it seems - it is about 1 pixel added for every 5 in X and Y directions.

And to see this difference, you'd need perfect conditions most times.

Lenses do have a longer life-cycle than camera bodies, simply because they hardly ever get 'upgraded', unlike the camera bodies. Each time a new one comes out, the older ones 'age'.

But they don't deteriorate - I am still happy with the A7rII, as I don't need the A7rIII/A7rIV features.

Aside from the GM lens, why not consider a fast prime instead? The GM lens is a tad front-heavy, and not as travel friendly as you may think.

Hi,

what primes do you have? also what focal lengths do you use the most?

id stick with the R3 and get both tamrons 17-28 and 28-75 (would give you a lot of bang for the buck) or the Sony 24-105 is a good option too..

i would too - the 24-70 F4 "zeiss" I had in the A7R1 days was disgraceful optically for its price and the Zeiss name and it wasn`t a decentered one, many agreed at the time and a lot of samples were worse than mine - I`d suggest it being the first thing to go ..

The Tamrons are looking good but I wish Sigma would get off their Butts and made those excellent ART zooms in FE mount

Sonyalpharumors.com reported today that Sigma is going to be announcing a 24-70 f2.8 FE and a 70-200 f2.8 FE. The article made it sound like they may be released soon.

Wow , I hope so . the Tamron maybe optically excellent but it looks no better made than the Sony 28-70 plastic kit lens and in the UK at over £700 that`s a bit disconcerting .. Sigma Art lenses are beautifully made and go the distance in a pro environment....

I`m using primes and cropping at the moment and have the 28-70 for smaller images until I decide which Standard zoom to go for (the G-Master is simply way too big)

Sigma lenses do then to be a little more expensive but build quality is very good, which does add to the weight.

Thanks all for your input.

I decided, mainly due to current budget reasons, to trade in my 24-70mm f4 ZA plus Samyang 35mm f2.8 for the Sony FE 24-105mm f4. Actually a little sorry to lose the Samyang as it was so small and lightweight

I believe the IQ of the 24-105 will be better than the 24-70. While it will not offer the IQ of the 24-70 GM lens, the difference in price was too much for me right now. I also decided I couldn’t, at the moment, afford to upgrade my A7Riii body.

I also agreed with the general view that I would have more to gain from upgrading my lens than my camera body.

i like the longer reach of the 24-105 and it is lighter to carry than the GM lens.

everything is a compromise at the end of the day.

Now, if money was no object .......

Why do you need it faster for landscape? There's along thread on how the 24-70mm will get you horrible sensor reflections, which is the worst possible lens for anyone doing landscpe and wanting sunstars, and the A7R4 doesn't have more dynamic range vs III even when down sampled.

I would not get that lens, and I would not upgrade. For pixel peaking, I'd add a 100-400 GM range. That lens is superbly good and there's outstanding examples of it for landscape. It would complement your current 24-70mm well.

Especially in landscape, where you stop down more often, Iwould not get anything faster, and I would not get a noisier camera at 61 trading in more noise and less cleanness.

Now if you need to upgrade one of those two things, I'd upgrade the lens, as the GM will have a higer microcontrast at almost any frequency or so I would expect, But don't expect miracle differences. F4 designs are usually well optimized.

If money was no object... we all would have people carrying the heavy stuff for us haha :-)

For me it's the glass every time.

It will do far more for your results than a new body.

Consider adding a macro lens (eg. 90mm) or a long lens.. you'll be taking noticeably different images and enjoying something entirely different.

A new body is just another (soon to be obsolete) electronic gadget.
